How much does "behoma" heal back?

All HP.
Bebpo said:
Now I'm at the king boss with the best armor/weapons buyable and I still can't do more than 12 damage with the dancer girl with her weapon or 10/11 damage with her fire spell and the tarot one has to keep healing and Orin does about 30 damage after the boss's defense has been lowered. Meanwhile the boss keeps casting "Behoma" which might be healing its entire HP back. I'm only lvl.11, guess I'll grind some levels and maybe get better spells :\

You're supposed to lose against King Leo
.

Errrr....it takes me to the death screen and back to the church if I do like normal dying, not event dying.

But all HP makes it seem impossible then? So what I am missing?

Are you talking about
Balzak
then? Use the
jewel of silence
against him.

Yeah, its Balzak. Didn't think about using the strange rare items I had gotten. Was just fighting him like a normal boss. Will try that now.

He's still casting Behoma. This is getting annoying. Do I have to keep using that item every other round to ensure magic is sealed?

It seals the magic for 6 turns, then you have to use it again. You can use it before then to refresh the effect, though.

I guess it's nice to have played enough DQ to know how many turns things last and how much HP is healed back with spells :P

They should put this info somewhere in the game for people who don't know these things!

Haven't had a lot of time to play yet, but with the weekend (and Tales of Innocence next week) coming up, I'm hoping to dig deep into this over the next couple of days. Currently nearing the end of Chapter 2, and so far, so good!

Having DQ on the go is one of life's finer pleasures, for sure. :)

Yay, ch.5!

Really looking forward to this after all that fantastic story setup.

Chapter 5 is the best. Nothing beats the feeling of running into characters from chapter 1-4 and finally getting them into your party.

Soooo are there any tricks to getting someone to sell you a 破邪の剣 in Chapter 3? I've worked like 6 or 7 days straight and the only new thing anyone has sold me was a Crossbow. Is it totally random? Aeana/Scarlet -- How long does it usually take for someone to sell you one, in your experience?

It's completely random. In the PSX version, it usually only took me 2 days maximum... in the DS version, it took a long time... like 6 days, then I reset and tried 3 days more until I finally got it. I probably just had good luck before, though, since I think Scarlet said it took her a long time on the PSX version a few times, too.

Finally got it after 15 days!

Bebpo -- once someone sells it to you at the shop (very rare), if you leave it there (i.e. don't sell it off to someone else), you can come back later in the chapter and buy it from the shop as many times as you like. You can then sell your stock of them when you get to Chapter 5 for big bucks.

And the sword is even more exploitable in the DS version, since bag contents carry over to chapter 5. Instead of bringing 12 swords with Torneko, you can bring 111... and other equipment, too. If you have the patience, anyway.

So it's basically just to rack up a lot of money.
Guess I didn't miss much not getting then.

Currently sailing around on my boat exploring. Fun, fun, fun!

Do you guys all read Japanese? I'm so jealous I have to wait for a western release. :(

I don't, but that won't stop me from enjoying it. I played the NES version so at least story wise I know what's going on. And there are translation guides out there to help you through the game.

Am I allowed to show some pics of the translated one? or will I get banned?

Sorry for vagueness, I just don't want to get in trouble :(

I don't see a problem with that, as long as the screenshots come from a game being played with an AR... and not from some DS backup thing.

DQIV finally arrived for me today! Wasn't expecting a Saturday delivery. Well now you all know my Saturday night plans. :D

Ahhh, reminds me of the good old days, when I'd order each DQ fresh from Japan (usually via Die Hard, back then) and then eagerly await the package showing up. :D I remember driving home from class on the last day before Christmas break in 1993 and finding out SFC Dragon Quest I&II was waiting for me when I got there. What a kickass vacation that was. :D

Almost all of the main story of the game is already translated and on the Japanese cart.

Yes, it's being localized.

I know that's the case, but what do you think the reason is for the delay in even the announcement at this point? Especially given that translation.

I do believe it's coming, but I just have to wonder why they're waiting.

Oh, missed this post.

Awesome! Keep us updated with your progress. :)

So it seems to me that using spell-sealing spells is the trick to winning some of the tougher boss fights? I assumed the spell wouldn't work on big bosses like status ailment ones don't work on bosses in most rpgs. But so far it's been working and it's the only way I'm getting through bosses that do 40+ damage (even after def up for all party) all party spells every turn since there isn't a all-party heal.

Also it's interesting how IV contrasts so much with V. V, having no human allies, focuses all on the story at hand and the changing world. Battles consist of having the right monster with the right spells/stats for the right time. In IV it's less about the story and more about the cast and the worldview. The party talk really develops the cast like a Tales game, and unlike V battles require you to use most/all your people so you need to keep them up in level and equipment and figure out what's the best party for each boss fight.

Well, you can use フバーハ to lessen the damage from breath attacks, which is the most common kind of all-party damage attack that bosses use. I don't really use マホトーン much at all.

I don't think anyone in my party had that for the
King Leo fight
just had to have the green cleric guy in my party doing the spell sealing every round.

Ah, I see. You should get it soon (I think Minea learns it at 28 or 29).

This is actually how most DQ games are. 5 is a bit unique in that it has a very strong focus on the overarching story. Other DQ games really focus on the smaller short stories and the journey itself - especially 6 and 7.

Yeah, my party was around lvl.15-18.

I'm looking forward to seeing how VI compares to IV/V/VIII. Of those IV has tons of party members to switch between, V has monsters to grab, VIII has a set party.

Sorry, I just found this really funny. :lol

I never remember the names of characters in rpgs outside the main lead. Names just aren't my thing.

Aeana, speaking of levels, after
beating Leo the prime minister guy in his castle told me Balzak was up at the other castle so I went there and it's another boss fight. Is there supposed to be a dungeon or something for me to gain levels between the two fights? He's doing quite a bit of damage to my lvl.17 party.

ethelred said:
It wasn't meant as an insult, honest. I just found it amusing, that's all.

Didn't take it as one.

You can go to the Royal Crypt (northeastish of Havalia, or just south of Endor) to fight metal monsters in the if you want. That's usually what I do at that point. It's a little tough when you start, but the liquid metals give 10000 experience. If Alena has the killer pierce, it's a bit easier.

Yeah, my main problem on the fight is that
sometimes he does his strong magic attack twice in a row and that totals for 80damage to all party. The magic sealing spell doesn't work on him, nor does the DEF down so all I'm doing is 30 damage or 60 damage per round as one or two guys attack and the other two heal. Thought I was going to eventually win with this strategy and lasted about 20+ rounds over 10 mins but he never died and eventually I did.

Also where can I buy good weapons/armor?

I just went to I think where you are talking about (I go inside and see ****stones) but the gate is locked and none of my keys open it?

Bebpo said:

At that point,
you can buy a dragon killer, dragon shield and dragon armor for the hero at Riverside (on the island in the middle-south of the map, southish from Konanberry), and a killer pierce for Alena at Rosary Hill which is northeastish from Konanberry, up a strait to the east of the lighthouse. If you don't have those, getting them should make it a lot easier. You can also buy a suit of liquid metal armor for 35,000 from a hidden merchant in Endor, whom you can reach now that you have the magic key. You can make money pretty quickly by fighting mystery dolls on the first floor of Santheim

Yeah, just fight in front of the gate. You'll get a key to let you in there later.

Yeah, I just have what the shops sold on the way to
King Leo
.

Wow, that equipment is good, but hahahaha it will take me hours of grinding in circles to get that kind of money :(

very interesting thread! did anyone notice yet, that you'll see the same users in every dragon quest thread? we're one big dragon quest family :lol
