Dragon Quest 5 DS - Official Japanese thread

Day 1 purchase confirmed...by me. ;)

Be sure to play them in order. You'll get so much more out of the story that way. IV, V and VI are part of a single story arc.

Million dollar question for me is that do you walk up the stairs by walking up (like DQ8) or choose stairs (like DQ7)? I loved DQ8 while hated DQ7 for its antique menu/gameplay system.
Wait, what do you mean by choose stairs? Sure, in DQ7 (and all DQ games before it) the stairs consist of one square tile, but if you step on the tile you automatically go upstairs. Besides, there are also some stairs in DQ7 where it requires you to walk a little. I mean, it's actually faster in DQ7 to walk up stairs than in DQ8. And since the DS remakes use assets of the PS games, the stairs also consist of one tile on the map, so there.

Also, people may tell you how even though DQ8's menus are prettier, it's far more cumbersome than the antique menus used in other DQ games.

I can't wait to pick up these remakes on the DS. For those that have played DQ4r/DQ5r, how is the difficulty compared to DQ8? As a relative noob to the series, do these games prompt you on where you're supposed to go next?

I just completed DQ8 last night (58:15) and I loved it! The only other DQ game I've played was the original Dragon Warrior for the NES. DQ8 wasn't overly difficult (Dhoulmagus took a couple of attempts), but I would sometimes get frustrated on where I was supposed to go next.

Ehh, they're barely related at all. There's almost nothing to gain from the story connection in these three compared to in the first trilogy, IMO. I would still play 'em in order, though, yes. :)

I dunno dude. After being
the legendary hero in 4, and then finding that none of that armor fits on me in 5, AND THEN finding out your SON is the next legendary hero, followed by finding the Heavenly Palace in ruins and under water after seeing it in all its glory in DQIV,
I got a lot out of that.

Then again, this is my first time playing both so close to each other.

(also, seeing both games using the same graphical assets might tie them together more tightly in my mind)

DQIV is pretty obvious about where to go next. DQV will have you wandering around aimlessly sometimes because you often have to talk to completely random strangers to get hints on where to go next.

No Dragon Quest game since the first one has had a 'stairs' command.

Uh, there hasn't been a 'stairs' command since Dragon Quest 2 came out almost 20 years ago. Only 1 had it.

Just because you beat it, does not mean the game is finished. Did you watch the credits completely?

I'm playing this a little bit during the day and at work from time to time, so I'm slowly advancing. Pretty much just started the third 'phase/generation' or whatever.

I don't even remember Dragon Warrior US having a stairs command.

Yeah, I know there's the Dragon Trials and other optional stuff resulting in a alternate ending, but I have so many games on my backlog right now (Persona 3, MGS4, Chocobo's Dungeon, SMT: Nocturne, etc. etc.), the standard ending will have to do. I'm just glad I got through the main quest. I have DQ7 to play on my PSP, but man... I hear that game is looooooong...

Doh, ok. Just letting you know in case.

Unnecessarily large screen of DW1.

Wow. Okay. A simple "it had a stairs command" would have sufficed.

HD NES. :D

And I'm at the demon world now, kinda drifted off to other games for a moment, plan on finishing this before next week at least.

This was really fun, VI is still the one I'm most excited to see and play though. How long was it after IV released until we saw stuff of V?

I like pictures! But, I didn't think it was going to be that big.

:lol

Anyway, what level should I be for the last boss? I'm in the Demon World right now. Leveling around Jahanna.

In my normal games, I believe I tend to beat him around 36 or 37.

Oh shit, really? I'm already 37. I might as well go ahead and go fight him.

Btw, I noticed that while I couldn't change my characters out while inside the Palace, I WAS able to change my characters out during the fight with Ivul. Is this an addition to the DS version, or could you do it in the PS2 version as well?

You can do that anywhere your wagon follows you. It's in all versions of the game, and it was in DQ4 too!

But the wagon doesn't follow you into Ivul's fight. :|

Yeah it does. The wagon mysteriously shows up once you get to Ivool's room. It's weird, and I guess most people don't notice it, since it's not with you in the palace.

Yeah, I guess I never noticed it. That would explain it.

I know they changed the layout of the Sky Tower or whatever, but did they take battles out too? I fought absolutely nothing going up to the top and walking back down inside.

There's still some in there, but I didn't ecounter many.

Like 3 or 4.

Finished the game this morning before work began.

Level 38, 29 hours(shorter than DQIV I think)

Last boss was easier than the DQIV boss imo.

The game was incredible. Easily my most favorite DQ game. Can't wait for DQVI!

All done. Time was 21:24 after the ending. Party was main guy (lv36), son (lv35), daughter (lv35), Deborah (lv32). Pretty sure this is the first time I beat the game with the whole family as main party. Had a fun time overall, though the controls being changed bugged me for awhile and not being able to rotate the camera was kind of annoying in some caves where it made visibility bad (looking at you here, boat cave).

I don't usually do much of the bonus content in this game (I don't know my way and wind up using a guide every time), once I get a Behomazun Slime to join, I will. Never bumped into one this time through.

The lack of rotating in caves was really silly. I think it was a design decision to make the dungeons more maze-like, but I also think it's a BAD decision. Because so many dungeons just have black space surrounding them, the top screen often gets absolutely no use, when you COULD be rotating the view into the top screen to see ahead.

Plus I'm very used to being able to do so in half the games in the series already, including the PS2 version. I got lost in that boat cave a couple times, especially at the end when I went through it backwards. Some caves let me rotate a little bit (I think one allowed full rotation, maybe the royal proof one or whatever), so it seemed really weird to have them being different.

Yeah that's one thing that slightly annoyed me. I haven't finished the game yet as I'm busy with assignments and film junk... but I loved the fact that in DQIV there was full rotation of the dungeons, I think there was only one that was restricted.

Ah well.

I see why they did it, though. DQ4 DS's dungeons don't really promote exploration at all, because you can essentially view almost all of the current floor you're on if you rotate the camera just so (since the areas are so small).
