Dragon Quest Heroes - Overview Trailer.

Is this game more musou like or something like Kingdom Hearts?

Yeah, more Musou than KH, although it did have like hold R1 and access your specials. The gameplay was very smooth and I was surprised how great the game looked.

Game went from not even on my radar to a day one purchase. I too can't wait til next week. lol

So, I was at Gamestop today and while I was looking around I heard our familiar Dragon Quest tune. Noticed they had a playable demo of Dragon Quest Heroes on their demo unit so I check it out.

Holy shit, the game is awesome. Didn't look too much into this title, but after playing for about 15 minutes I was totally sold. Game looks fantastic too. I immediately went and pre-ordered it, don't want to risk getting a gutted copy. :P

The best part of the gameplay I've seen, since my only other Musou game was Hyrule Warriors, is that when you pick up items it doesn't go-
DUN-DADA-DA-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
...every fucking time.

Not sure if anyone from Canada ordered the collector edition from Amazon.ca but I would advise checking your order status , mine was cancelled without notice (good thing I checked) due to provider issue (they cannot have it in stock it seems) -_-

So I placed an order from SE store, that mean I won't be playing day one .....
But at least Il have the collector .

I'm still a little bitter that my favorite DQ (6) only gets Terry, who I never liked, and DQ7 gets nothing at all.

But otherwise, I'm fucking pumped for this.

I preorder the collectors edition the first day the announced it. In the US at least, I have always received the game on release day, except for Type 0 collectors edition which actually showed up a day early. At least they aren't using digital river anymore. I didn't have any delivery problems, but there was never any updates on status, so it felt like you were rolling the dice.

I never cared for these types of games, but after Hyrule Warriors, I can't wait.

I was excited for the game when it was first announced, but the closer to its release the less I care. I think I just want a true DQ game. No spin-offs. Maybe I'll grab it once it hits the discount bin or gets cheap on the secondary.

I have no way to play the older games. I would like to play 7 and 8, but no localisation so far.

1-6 are all on iOS/Android (I think) and GB->DS.

And before they were on that, everyone played them on the computer, I'll let you figure that one out.

They're extremely easy to get into and are a part of gaming history.

The only thing I didn't like about Terry was that he fit the same exact role your hero did, except your hero had healing, and he didn't hit quite as hard as Hassan. So unless you wanted three brawlers in your party with shit for magic, he wasn't really useful.

I'm going to buy this. I've never been interested in JRPGs before but, while browsing the PS store on my PS4 I came across this game and it looks really cool. I never played the previous games so I dont know how that will affect me playing this game.

It doesn't matter if you played the previous games this is kind of it's own thing. Obviously the only thing you wouldn't know is all the guest characters but that isn't a huge factor in this game. Each of the guest characters have their own small piece of story in this so you'll learn a little about them as you go through it.

The thing is though this games sales are gonna be very important imo. They seem to be pushing this game pretty hard so I'm really hoping it sells well and imo it really deserves it. I think it's a safe bet to say the next major Dragon Quest title is gonna be coming west, I mean with the install base of PS4 outside of Japan they would be crazy not to.

I also wonder if they will keep the characters talking through the DS4 controller in this version. Here are a few shots from the JP version.

Ok, thank you very much.

map design is really good here, better than Dynasty Warriors (the last DW i played was 6 so i don't know if they improve level design in it or not)
Definitely day 1 for this since I love everything about this game and I want to see localisation for DQXI :p
Edit: just watched some gameplays on YT, it seems some stages have small map and some stages have big map combined from small maps. Anyone played JP version confirm this?

There are several different types of maps. There are a few large open area maps that are basically clear all the enemy type missions, You have more linear narrow type maps that are basically go from one end to the other, There are maps that are a mix of both that are usually used for the tower defense stages and then there are maps that have multiple areas that require use of teleporters to move around so overall there is a good variety.

The tower defense stages usually have you protecting something located on a given area of the map. The way they work is portals spawn all over the map and enemies constantly flow out of these making your goal to destroy them before they reach the target and destroy it. Part of the challenge requires you to pick and choose which portals you destroy to ensure the other enemies don't reach the target and your left stuck moving back when you get caught.

This is where placing monsters on the field and the main characters ability to teleport around. Each portal has a mini boss to destroy to take out the portal.

Mission maps are usually go from one end to the other and defeating a mini boss at the end. The main bosses all have their own little battle area that comes at the end of an area when all missions are complete.

The open field ones are more like DW and they are a kill everything type map which is great for leveling early on. There aren't a whole lot of these in the game but plowing through a field of slimes is satisfying lol.

The game throws a lot of enemies at you but it's not always just about that which is nice. Sometimes it's just here are a few but they are really strong, some areas even at 99 are difficult and those areas are usually where the metal slimes like to hang out or run into.

Here are a few samples of the different types (luckily I happen to be playing this right now lol)

The ones with the blue circles are the teleporters so going in those will bring you to different maps.

Exactly what I wanted to hear ^_^

Happened to me as well a few days ago :( (Amazon.ca pls)

Meh, I broke down and ordered it off of the S-E store. I guess 4.99 in 5-10 day shipping is better than sales tax, but a week late.

THE THINGS I DO FOR DQ3 COSTUMES.

Reviews are pouring in and seem good (3/5 and 8/10). Curious if someone is going to make a thread.

Edit: Someone made it when I was typing, ha ha.

Stupid GAF hype threads making me more excited about a game I'm not even sure I want. It does look real neat and the variety seems interesting, maybe worth checking out. I don't have a big DQ affinity but that doesn't seem like a deal breaker.

Question: How is the party AI? As in, when you aren't controlling the other characters, are they braindead or competent?

I don't remember anything special about party AI. I don't think it's really good, but not completely braindead if I remember correctly.
You can insta-switch so I really didn't care about party AI.

Team AI is just fine they fight alongside you well and handle themselves just fine. I never once felt like I had to babysit them in any way plus you have the ability to switch between any of the characters at the press of a button. You will be doing this a lot so they aren't really ever left out of your control for very long.

I'm not big on the Musou games, I've given them many chances and just find them boring as hell. Even Hyrule Warriors did absolutely nothing for me despite being a big Zelda fan. Which is why it was extremely odd when, upon seeing this in a kiosk at Gamestop a couple of weeks ago it really caught my eye and I looked into it. I was already leaning towards giving it a shot but after learning it's got a bit more depth to it than your normal musous I'm on board and pretty excited for next week.

Since I was reviewing this game, I can tell that the characters are talking through the Controller in the western version.

Can't wait for my Collector's Edition.

You dont have to really worry about them, but at the same time dont expect them to be actually useful either. Since you can switch between them on the fly its hardly an issue though.

Still really debating getting this... I feel like I should finish up Warrior Orochi 3 Ultimate first so I have no other 'muso' on my plate.

I have this pre-ordered just to show my support for the dragon quest series (and to be honest, because i wanted the slime steelbook), but I have a copy of the japanese version and i cant help but wish there was less emphasis on tower defense. Still a good game, but i wish it had gone full musou.
