Dragon Quest IV DS - The Official Thread

It's not a big deal, no, but just knowing it's gone rankles a bit. On the flip side, in the grand scheme of things, not buying it on release day -- or even not buying it at all -- isn't really a big deal either. But abstaining from a purchase for a time or even indefinitely might, hypothetically, convince Square that removing things like this just plain ain't cool.

It's not like there aren't scads of other games you can blow forty bucks on. And then if Square doesn't cut anything from Dragon Quest V you can blow forty bucks on that game without reservation.

The question is, how can S-E discern the justifications for our spending habits? If you buy it, they'll think of it as support for Dragon Quest, Remakes, Localizations, and trimming shit during the localization process. Regardless of what you do, fill out whatever S-E customer surveys you can find. Atlus is very good at listening to their fans' views... but is S-E?

Many people here are already obliged to buy Dragon Quest V day one, or else they are BPs.

Christ, that's the entire line? I can imagine having trouble getting into the game because of the dialogue alone. That is annoying. DQ8 had accents for characters, but it wasn't obnoxious. Reading that one line just gives me a headache.

Spare a thought, I actually talk like that! :lol

Chapter 3 is completely awesome. That is all.

Himuro said:
Huh? DQ8 took forever for me to get cash :D

I had tons of cash in that game. Near the end I got like 200k in the bank alone, unused funds. There are certain enemies who just drop a lot of coins, like gold golems

Just looking at the images for DQ4's English version I can already tell I am going to hate the localization.

"Och, just this morn, I've had mothers from the Strathbaile here cryin' aboot their bairns."

wtf does that even mean

:lol

Well I understand it but then again I am Scottish and some people talk like that here.

I've been dawdling with other things lately but I hit Chapter 5 at around 8 hours playtime earlier today. Once I get some party members I'll see if the Talk function works.

It doesn't work in chapter 5 either, sadly.

Just finished second chapter and I must say I have pretty mixed feelings about this game. It has been very addictive so far but on the other hand it feels pretty stupid to level up my heroes chapter after chapter and collect enough gold to buy the best weapons again and again.

How many chapters there is ? And is it like this until the end ? Or does all the characters meet up at some point or what ?

You'd be doing it anyway, the way this game sets it up is that in the final chapter, you assemble all the people you're playing as in the earlier chapters. Their experience and items carry over. Not that you won't be doing a lot of battling and leveling in the last chapter.

Chapter 5 is the "grand finale"
but this remake (like the PS1 remake) offers a sixth chapter also
. Also, Chapter 5 is a lot more comprehensive than the others.

I don't really mind the accents btw, I actually kind of like them. And I'm not even native english. Still, I can understand what they're saying fairly well. I find it helps if you keep the proper dialect/accent in the back of your head while reading it.

So if Chapter 5 is the finale, then what does this talk about Chapter 6 entail? Is that some sort of Aftermath chapter where you can finish up sidequests and the like?

Also, Chapter 5 is a lot more comprehensive than the others.

This almost sounds like Spore. :P

Additional main story, bonus dungeon, secret party member and new final boss

Along the same lines, if anyone knows where I can find a good shot of that Alena artwork where she's showing her muscle, without something else like a sword overlaying her, I'd appreciate it for the potential avatar material.

She's probably my favorite character in this game, with the only other possible contender being the female hero, and off the top of my head I'm pretty sure she's my favorite female fighter-class character in any RPG. Go, critical hit princess! ♥

How's the charm of the main series compared to Rocket Slime? That game was completely lovable and so full of charm.

I haven't played Rocket Slime, but I can tell you that the series proper is loaded with it.

Man, this game is so awesome - i`m at chapter 3 now - torneko ftw :D

I'm about six hours into the game, at chapter 3 (a rather tedious part...or so it seems at first) and I'm really loving DQIV so far. The presentation is just great for a DS game and the decision to divide it into five chapters is really cool. It kinda feels like I'm playing five mini-RPGs, with more or less unique stories and gameplay twists.
And there's soo much charme in this little game. Thinking about the battle sprites alone makes me all happy. :0

Sigh...I'm already looking forward to V and VI. :I

Rocket Slime's main purpose is exude quirky charm from every pore, and it succeeds. The main series... still has a ton of charm, but neither in such consistency or quality. Townspeople often say interesting/charming things, but they aren't as over the top or nearly as well animated as in RS.

The $10 gift card deal is finally up at Circuit City: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Drag...sem/rpsm/oid/220345/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

By the way, does anyone have any good wallpaper for this game? The ones on the official site suck, which is a shame since FFIV's wallpapers were amazing

I just bought it from that link. They list the game as 39.99 and say you get a free 10.00 card by email. I check out and they charge me 31.86 and I get the email with the 10.00 card. Nice.

That's awesome. I also can't believe your CC sold it to you early, my local CC is a release-date Nazi.

Looks like they fixed that :(

Probably wont get the game at launch. Preordered of course, but the Hurricane might affect our UPS shipments....unless it already arrived sometime last week.

Eurogamer review is up: 8/10

This is, of course, an old game, built for one of the earliest Japanese consoles, now dressed up and made modern for a new generation of players unborn the first time around. But despite its age, Dragon Quest IV is a heavyweight update of a marvellous game. Indeed, it emerges as the strongest RPG for the system, an extraordinary feat considering its long journey to get here. Blue moustache and all.

:o, that's bold. Guess I'm getting this sooner or later.

Chaps, is the game for me? I really like the look of this one, but have struggled to get on with the various Final Fantasy games I've tried (4,5,6,7,10 - maybe there's just no hope for me) - is there a comparison between the two series? Should I stay away? Or is this the eye-opener I've been searching for?

I'm biting the Squeenix Tax Bullet on this one, I must play it. Went on lunch and reserved my copy and picked up the guide. I'm really excited!

haven't been playing many games lately, pleasantly surprised that this is now out, i will have to pick it up!
i'm glad it's getting generally positive reviews in the press as well.

I've just reached Chapter 5. The opening scene was powerful stuff -
you've only known these people for a few minutes, but it was still touching to see Elisa sacrifice herself so that you (the hero) could live.

So far, I like it even more than the FF IV Remake. The story chapters are a very interesting and fresh way of introducing the different characters to the player, even today. Back then it must have been revolutionary. I also like how the gaming world is divided between the two screens - one of the best uses for the double screens that I've seen. And the soundtrack - wow. There aren't that much tracks, but all of them are catchy, and with headphones the sound quality is fantastic (for the DS).

Depends what you like/dislike. Dragon Quest games are typically story-lite compared to Final Fantasy, typically with more fighting and customization but also with a more streamlined battle system. DQ is also fairly well known for not blatantly telling the player where to go / what to do next (at least, some of the time.) Story and intrigue are traded in for the adventure of figuring out where to go / what to do.

I was under the impression that it would be buyable tomorrow, but I could be wrong. It is shipping from EB and GameStop today, though.

If they specify a date/time they've been great. Plus, they're cutting the Square-Enix tax off of the game.

Did you call a store to get that info? All I can find on their website is a pre-order button and a "Not Available for Pick Up" under delivery options.

For certain, but my point is that the CCs around here don't always get things on day 1. CC, BB, and other non-specialty gaming stores around usually get them the same week as GS and EB, but not always the same day.

In Chapter 3

After you've done everything up to the point of
setting up your own shop in Endor
What's the easiest way to get more money?

Also, this game rocks. First DQ ever, but not the last.

Just buy stuff and have your wife put it up for sale. If you waited until someone sold you a cautery sword in Lakanaba, those are the best value. If not, use the abacus of virtue or whatever they called it in this new translation.

This is DAY ONE for me. I'll be picking it up tomorrow or Wednesday. But I have been looking forward to this day since I played and beaten the nes version ALL those years YEARS ago. I'm SO uber excited! :D Nothing can make my year than this game!

Okay, thanks :D Best I got after days and days of merchanting there was the hunter's bow.

Can't I technically just go back and work some more and wait for the Cautery Sword?
