Dragon Quest IV DS - The Official Thread

Quick question. In Ch. 2 I just found the amulet in the
cave
, but can't remember where I bring it to advance the story. Anyone?

Go back to Vrenor at night, and you'll find the people in the graveyard.

Playing through chapter 2 currently. But I've found that I sorta agree with a point made earlier. From the little I played of the NES version going from place to place was a really perilous adventure and it took a long time it felt epic. Here they just feel like everything's a hop, skip and a jump away I remember having to level up between towns but now it's not such a big deal.

I hate casinos in RPGs to fucking death.
I love/hate them. I'm just glad I'm not living near any legalized gambling because I would be out on the street having spent all my money.

Just got to the Casino in the game last night and figured I would have a quick run and try out the different games. Lost at monster betting and at poker. Having only 5 tokens left I stroll up to a slot machine, and put the rest in...
Cherry - Sword - Cherry
Seven - Seven - Seven
Seven - Seven - Seven

Luckiest slot in the house, earned me 2,000 tokens out of nothing. I was hooked for hours afterward. The only time the machine ever really paid out after that was getting 9 cherries which was odd. Even tho it was only 50 tokens, it was enough of a carrot on a stick to keep me going.

The Casino is an insidious bastard!

Not a big fan of the casino, though I did manage to go from 100->300 tokens really quick with a couple lucky slots and quadruple-or-nothing on poker. I have to say I'm not thrilled with the double-or-nothing since it's easy to get a draw where it's impossible to win (i.e. pick a card higher than an ace). But now I'm back to 200 after losing religiously at slots.

Am I better off trying to "grind" in the casino for the better armor, or should I just grab a few more levels after getting beat twice on #5 in the tourney? I think I'm at level 12 right now.

Ok.. I'm still on the 1st chapter but damn is this shit slow and stupid. Attack x infinite so far. When do I get a new party member? I've just
saved the kids.

My previous knowledge of DQ:

I've played DQVIII up until the big boss on the island where I had to grind a bit and then lay off the game as the encounter rate and looong battle animations killed it for me.

I played all of DQIII, which is so awesome because it was FAST. Fast and efficient. And it really utilized the power of the GBC to produce some awesome colors and animations. And the soundtrack + story is rad too. Everything clicked with that game and me.

Now IV seems a bit slower, but nothing crazy-like. I'm liking the accents and the chapter progression shows promise! I'm a bit miffed as it has no touch-screen compatibility. I knew this beforehand but now I'm really looking forward to DQIX, it could make it so much smoother a gameplay experience for me personally.

Oh well, continuing onwards..

If you haven't already, flip the combat speed to 1. :D

And yes, Chapter 1 is simpler fare by design. It's by far the most boring Chapter.

Did you miss Healie?

Just started chapter 3, and liking it a lot. I thought the chaptering sounded a good idea, but as I've been playing it, it has felt a little disheartening to go back to zero gold and lvl 1. I think it will all come together for me as the game goes on though as Chapter 2 was longer, and thus more fun than the simple chapter 1.

When the characters finally come together, they do keep they're respective gold and items from before, yes? I should've played the casino with Alena as I had about 10,000 gold before the chapter end.

Chapter 5 makes for an amazing payoff. Gold is lost, but equipped and bagged items are retained, save for the occasional irrelevant plot item. Those get deleted.

Best bet for finishing off chapters? Blow your money on loot and bag it all.

I dont see how people think DQ VIII had overly long animations. Maybe if it had Final Fantasy style spell casting animations and whatnot, but the battles ran by pretty fast for me. Even playing DQ IV on its default battle speed.

Maybe I just like animations in battle and the music, so it doesnt seem as slow to me?

EDIT: Didnt think people could actually miss Healie. Never rush through an RPG the first time through. Take your time and explore everything.

By "modern" DQ standards, VIII's battles were kind of slow. I didn't mind it at all, especially if compared to other big RPGs.

Trust me, your not the only one who feels that way....

Haha, wow. That minidemon in the lighthouse that's looking for Torneko. Hysterical.
Was that there in the original? I don't remember it at all.

DQVIII was fast compared to Final Fantasy, and slow compared to--yes--Dragon Quest. :P

Personally, the attack animations didn't bother me much, but the victory poses at the end of every battle did. I figured they were probably being used to mask loading that crazy, enormous overworld back into memory, but they still annoyed me eventually. :( Watching attack animations isn't bad because each monster did have a unique reaction to getting hit, and at least it held my active attention because I had to track who was taking damage and how much of it, on both sides. But after the battles were over, I wanted to move forward instead of watching the characters putting away their weapons with the same animation they used last time, which was the same as the time before that, and before that, and so on.

I hope they at least keep the DQ VIII style of battle animations (showing your character actually attacking) in the final version of DQIX, along with voices. Loved the voices in DQ VIII.

And please have a really menacing looking final boss. I know AT can design some crazy looking stuff when he needs to, as indicated by most of the pre VIII final bosses.

DQVIII was fast compared to Final Fantasy
errr what? DQ8 battles are way slower than FFX or FFX-2. Even if you take into account the long summon animations in FFX, the battles still felt fast and fluid. I believe you had the option to shorten Summon animations in FFX, too.

DQ8 featured probably one of the slowest battle systems of last gen. There was even some slight and awkward 'pause' before some of the attacks.

Yeah, looking at recent videos for VIII, it's pretty painful. I love how fast DQIV is in comparison. I think I'll put it over FFIVDS in general if I had the choose between the two. Also, when I was intoxicated last night, my enjoyment of DQIV just shot up. Just so simple and fast. Although, I still think SMT series for me is king of the turn-based.

Ahhh thanks for the info! Good job I kept a save just before the end of the chapter 2, I can go back and blow it in the casino!

Money doesn't carry over, but casino tokens do!

Bit of a n00b question, but do the seeds (Seed of agility, strength, etc) just give you a temporary boost in certain areas, or are those effects lasting?

Bag can hold 99. Torneko can hold up to 12 (assuming you get rid of/bag the rest of his equipment). How many Cautery Swords you get and where you put them are two choices that are completely up to you. They'll transfer over to Chapter 5 regardless.

Red Scarlet said:
You don't get the bag until Chapter 5 in the PS1 version, so the 12 item slots was all Torneko could carry.

Ah I see. So now I just get as many Cautery swords as I please and throw them in the bag?

Edit: Well okay then.

Is it a good strategy to save the seeds for later?

I'm currently at chapter 4 and haven't used a single seed... In every RPG that has permanent stat-boosters, I tend to be extremely cautious.

How does one get cautery swords in ch. 3?

Err, I guess where is scarlet's writeup..?

When working the store in the first town of Chapter 3 eventually someone will offer to sell it to Torneko. You buy it from this person and then don't sell it to anyone else. Then you can buy as many of them as you want/have money for.

It took me about an hour plus to get someone to sell me a Cautery sword.

Cautery swords won't turn up until day 2, IIRC.

And regarding the stat boosting seeds, I never, ever use them or their like in RPGs. It hasn't stopped me from beating any DQ so far, except for V and VI, which I've never played due to the fact that they were never localized!

Oh damn I think I might have already sold that haha, does that guy ever come back?!

Woah. Thanks for the tip!:D Why was this not default? So awesome.

Did you miss Healie?

No I didn't miss Healie, but he, well.. auto-healed and attacked for 1-3dmg, he didn't really change the dynamic of the battles. Or could I have made him follow orders?
Ah, well.. the game has good pacing so far!, just when I was about to get pissed the game whisks off to the 2nd chapter and gives me all I wanted.:D

And on it goes..

(I can check the stock list in towns. Nice.)

edit- Oh wtf! I forgot games have these.. manual things. I will examine it right away.

Yeah, as mentioned, Chapter 1 is very much an introductory chapter. You might think that's what the Prologue was for, but keep in mind there was no combat there, and the Prologue wasn't even in the NES original to begin with. So for all intents and purposes, Chapter 1 is the real introduction to the game.

And yes, battle speed set to 1 is SIIIIIICK. :D

Hit Y in the overworld for a handy-dandy (and pretty!) map...

Onto Chapter 5 now and I'm just loving this. Plenty other folk have put it so much more eloquently than I could ever do but this game just oozes personality.

Loving the drama and intensity of the start of this chapter. Has the feel of something truly epic. Loving it, loving it, loving it. :D

Just talking about the animations, not the battles as a whole. Battles did carry on with a methodical pace, but I'm not sure whether that was caused more by the animations in and of themselves or the way they dragged things out by making me watch party HP totals falling and rising after every attack and healing spell.

Or both, I guess, but I know which one bugged me more.

And now back to trying to hunt down missing DQIV monsters. D:

Yeah, my jaw hit the floor when I saw what was happening. Did not expect that. Amazing how the prologue connected the hero and Eliza in such a short time to create that effect.

Yep yep, the Prologue was a nice addition. But even her lines in the beginning of Chapter 5, when she was lying in that bed of flowers... :(
