Dragon Quest IV DS - The Official Thread

On you people and your free time, I'm still on Chapter 2 trying to earn enough tokens to get a Spangled Dress for Alena before I enter the arena. IIf only the bloody game would be more cooperative and let me win my bets on the monster fighting more often.

I have never won a single bet on the monster fighting. I just stick with poker, occasionally try the slots if I'm feeling random.

Damn where do you get the dreamblade + earrings? I'm getting rocked by that guy too.

There's a town in the east you can reach by boat. Monsters in that area are tough though, even in the water they are doing the same amount of damage as the boss I mentioned. O_o

Any fighting tips for a n00b to the series? Just started chapter 1 & don't want to unknowingly back myself into a corner :)

Beautiful looking game I think :)

It's pretty hard to screw up. Try to kill enemies one group at a time, and don't be afraid to run away. Difficulty jumps are usually noticeable and you lose half your gold if your party is defeated, so it always pays to drag the corpses back to a priest before things get ugly. A little bit of grinding goes a long way if you're having trouble, too.

When I first got the boat, I thought I was supposed to sail to the ISLAND in the south - not just straight south. So I found a lot of stuff out of order. I happened to have enough cash on me at the time to buy the dreamblade. I think the town is called Riverton? I forget now.

But yeah, the monsters in that area weren't kind to me at all and I quickly sailed away. ^___^;;

The earrings I ended up sailing to some random place called Rosehill and they were for sale so I bought them. I don't even remember where on the map it is, I was just exploring the coastlines.

Funny, I actually just came across Rosehill this afternoon. It's located on the Northern continent (furthest East) and I managed to get to it by sailing up the river from the south next to Parenthia. Pretty sure you can go south from the top of the continent aswell. It's on the land mass furthest to the right of the continent on the river.

Thanks chap, much appreciated.

Wow! I'm in chapter 2 and already died four of five times. The tournament is also a bitch :lol I find DQIV really hard...

I have a few deaths (3-4) and runaways (5-10) on my record too. I'm levelling in the metal bubble slime pit Red Scarlet mentioned, and it gets pretty brutal even with levels in the 18-21 range. I did manage to kill one of the bubble slimes (10K EXP wooo!) but since they always arrive in a pack of other guys my hero died before we could win out (ugh!).

Finally beat Leon, but even with 4 characters averaging level 20 it was no joke. 12 rounds and Meena died late before I won. That frost breath was doing ~38 damage per character.

Either I got really lucky or it has become incredibly easy to kill metal babbles. I spent barely a half hour walking around the crypt and killed 6-7 of them, raising everyone's level by at least 5.

My only real problem with this game so far is that I feel like I'm breezing through the game entirely too quickly. I like the idea of more compact towns and overworld and a faster walking speed, but I wish it didn't extend to dungeons. I was in and out of Aktemto Mine (or whatever its called in this version I can't remember) in five minutes flat. I'm 16 hours into the game and about 75% through. Hopefully Chapter 6 will be both long and challenging as I don't know it like the back of my hand like I do the rest of the game.

I just filled up all my available space with Medicinal Herbs...the tournament is also pretty much impossible without the metal claws.

How does one play this Chapter 6? I've only played the NES version before...

I made it yesterday, went outside to get my level from 12 to 14 and it was pretty easy now. Only the snowman took a while because I didn't see which one I should hit.

Chapter 3 today!

That's exactly what I did. Those two levels helped quite a bit.

Just picked up Alena and Kiryl in Chapter 5, time to go find Ragnar!

Haha, now I know who Ragnar reminds me of: the Little King's Story's knight in your avatar. Well, that and a little bit of Cyan from FF6.

I'm sure this has been addressed, but forgive me... the player build your own town... I don't have WiFi, so will I need some kind of USB thing for the DS to hook it up to the internet?

I got the nun for Hoffman's town, and after that I made my little town ambassador, but now I've got no clue what's up with that feature, the manual's no help, and the FAQs available don't cover it.

Edit: Rocky told me where to find Prelvis and the other guy. No more clues available though. Time triggered? Event triggered?

Aeana posted a guide for the DS version (which differs completely from the PS1 version, apparently) upthread, I believe.

You don't actually need to go online for the quest, only if you want to trade townsfolk with other people. You can complete it finding just people in your own game.

I just spent an hour in the tomb with the metal slimes only to realize after the fact that only my actual party of four were getting that XP. now those guys are 6-7 levels ahead of the rest of my group who stayed with the wagon. oh well.

i brought this up earlier but no one responded- why does offensive magic suck so bad in this game? any spell that attacks a bad guy seems to only work 50-75% of thee time. it seems like such a waste.

is there any reason my party shouldn't be Hero, Rangar, Alena and Kiryl (for healing) for the rest of the game?

Assuming you're talking about the crypt southwest of Endor, as long as you stay in the very first room of the crypt the party members in your wagon will also get the experience.

Attack spells from the Hero are mostly useless since he usually has very strong physical attacks but for people like Mara and Brey it's very useful. Judging from where I think you are, Cristo should have Beat and/or Defeat by now, which can be very useful against large groups of enemies.

That's the exact four I've always used. A lot of people use Nara and/or Mara in place of Ragnar and/or Cristo but Cristo has plenty of good magic and once Ragnar gets the Metal Babble Sword his power is too ridiculous not to keep him in IMO.

EDIT: I just realized I'm using all NES names for stuff. I'm still having a hard time adjusting to the crappy new names.

Okay. 46 Mini Medals, all Zenethian EQ, Pioneer Town as high as it can go, average party level something around 34.

I've killed a few King Metals out of dumb luck - any tips on getting them down regularly, though? At this point, Tsvarina Fire Claw crit or bust. :lol

I'm guessing I'll want some multi-attack EQ, like those oh so expensive Falcon Swords, but the Liquid Metal Sword is obviously nice as well. Probably want some meteor bracelets too.

I suggest giving Alena the falcon knife earrings. The base attack power is lower than the fire claw, but you attack two times -- that's two chances to crit, with Alena's ridiculous crit rating (and if you use oomph, her two attacks will total much more than one fire claw attack on non-metals). The best way to kill king metals is to hope Alena crits with it, and use the sands of time if she doesn't.

AEANA, could you do me a huge favor? Could you post the differences between this version and the nes version, then the differences between this and the ps1 version? You played this alot more then I have, and I'm only intimately familiar with the NES version.

I know it maybe alot, but this really would be appreciated, and I'll owe you 1!

I have a question about pioneer town, do you get more people when you encounter other ppl with DS's or do you also find ppl within the game?

OK. I'm really loving this now I'm at Chapter 5. Although I just wasted a whole hour of gameplay and grinding between meeting back up with Aleana and Ragnar.
I thought I could join up with Ragnar and THEN do a little more leveling up and exploring, I didn't realise there would be no way out of the secret chamber once I met Ragnar. I should've saved before since I got wiped out by the lion boss and I hadn't saved the game at all that session, I didn't want to lose half my money so I shut it off
>:-(

I would think I'll finish this by the end of the weekend though. I'd say of the DQ games I've played it's up there with my favorites 5 and 8.

Strange, my spells are usually fine unless it's one of Meena's wind spells--those are definitely horrible, I admit. Maybe you just haven't reached the good ones yet... By the end of the game, Maya's best single-target attack spell (
Kafrizzle
) was outdamaging even Falcon Knife Earrings Alena (unless she got a critical), and meanwhile my Heroine's
Kazap
spell did even more damage than that while also hurting every enemy--and neither of them tend to miss unless the enemy is immune to it.

I never used Borya after chapter 2, though, so I can't particularly speak about him...

Well, as far as really big changes go...

NES->PS1
  • Monster attack animations were added.
  • Some of the weapons that gave 'multi-hit' connotations in later games were changed, since they don't hit multiple enemies in DQ4. Thorn whip -> holy knife, boomerang -> crossbow, morning star -> holy lance. The guy in the arena in chapter 2 who used a boomerang was changed to use a crossbow instead.
  • Small medal system was changed. Instead of spending medals like money, it was changed to be like it is in 6 and up, where you're rewarded for getting a certain amount of medals.
  • The immigrant town from DQ7 was added, and behaved just like it did in DQ7 (pretty much).
  • Chapter 6 was added. It has an extension of the story and a bonus dungeon to go through.
  • The bag from DQ6/7/8 was added, but was only available in chapter 5.
  • The monster book from DQ7 was added, too, and there's a reward for completing it (300,000 casino coins).
  • Some of the AI options were changed, and you can now choose to control your characters manually in chapter 5.
  • Inventory size was increased to 12 per character.

PS1->DS
  • Monster idle animations were added.
  • Immigrant town system was changed so that you only build one town (instead of one of several) according to a legend, you only have to recruit a few NPCs instead of 30+, and you can no longer max out the town in chapter 5.
  • The bag is now available in chapters 1-4 as well as 5.
  • User interface was completely overhauled, with icons for items and portraits for characters, among other things. You can buy and sell multiple items at once.
  • Battles are much faster, and spell effects were redone entirely.
  • Items that were once totally hidden now just sparkle on the ground, making their presence pretty obvious.
  • They changed the levels that some spells are learned.
  • Maps are smaller and quicker to traverse.
  • There are much fewer small medals in the game, and you can't get the last rewards until near the very end of chapter 5, unlike the PS1 version.
  • They completely got rid of luck seeds and replaced them with seeds of defense, which I don't think were even in the PS1 version (not 100% sure on this).
  • Bonus dungeon was changed from the PS1 version. It used to consist of areas from DQ7, and now it has totally new areas.

I think that covers most of the really big things. Perhaps Scarlet will chime in with anything I missed.

Save at that church and reset the game. When you load it, you should be able to get to it.

Did you ever get into a fight where everything ran away, like Metal monsters? That can bring down the victory::battle ratio, iirc.

Yeah, but I had metals run away from me more than the one time that my battle records would suggest, so the enemies fleeing must still count towards a victory tally. Oh, and the Sands of Time went straight into the bag, unused, in my game.

There are a couple medals in the bonus dungeon.

Yeah, I fretted for nothing. I've got 64 or 65 now, way more than I needed. I forgot that the modern DQs tended to give you more medals than you'd need, in case you missed a few.

Quick question, picked this up last night and played through Chapter 1. Do your items carry over to future chapters? Mostly thinking of the "main" chapter. I didn't use any seeds and would like to know if I should hoard them or use them.

The title screen music always gets me. Is it from the Dragon Quest VIII orchestral soundtrack? Either way, pretty excited to finally get to play this one. The people complaining about the menu and interface should play the older NES versions or even DQVII to see how improved things are.

All of their stuff carries over...but only to when the character joins your party in a future chapter. You do lose all Ragnar's money though.

Woah. That was awesome. Loved every single moment of it and definitely rate it as one of my favourites. Now to polish off the monster book, Immigrant Town and any other leftovers after the credits.

Psaros final form rocked and the way they conveyed the drama in relatively simple graphic style was astounding. Loved the animations of the coming together with Torneko and his son aswell as the Heros final cut scene. Awesome.

I appreciate the newly simplified immigrant town, but I think maybe they OVER-simplified it.

The DQVII version was a pain in the ass though.

Chapter Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiive! :D

Chapter Four was great
but so short! Or did it just feel that way because I spent so long in Chapter Three?

So far, the Chapter 4 battle theme and the Chapter 5 worldmap are some of my favorite music in the game.

Thanks. I think I'm going to get everyone a meteorite bracer and all the goodies. This game is probably going to occupy my DS for quite some time.

Some of the best DQ music ever, actually. Bonus: In Chapter 5 and beyond, if you put one of the sisters in the party's lead position, that awesome battle theme returns!
