Dragon Quest IV DS - The Official Thread

How much is there to do in Chapter 6? I beat the game a few days back, and poked around towns for a bit but wasn't hit with the purpose of the chapter.

My final boss encounter ended with my party getting basically wiped out to where I was subbing in the four characters I had never used (my party was the hero, Maya, Alena, and Meena for nearly the entirety of chapter 5), and Torneko managed to trip, crit, and kill the boss about a turn or so before I was going to lose it all. Amazing way for the game to end I thought.

Hahaha. This has happened to me, and apparently many other people as well. I thought it was great.

To answer your question: there's a bonus dungeon and two bosses, and a little bit of story stuff. You get bonuses for beating one of the bosses more than once, though.

Compared to chapter 5? Really not that much. You traverse a new dungeon, which isn't too long, but has a pretty entertaining boss fight at the end. You can then recruit
Psaro
, but I'll leave the specifics up to you. Finally, there's the bonus final boss,
Aamon
, who is virtually a retread of
Psaro
.

The most game time you'll have will be defeating the bosses at the end of the bonus dungeon over and over, which will unlock
Psaro's
ultimate equipment and, eventually, the final immigrant.

Ah, excellent. Sounds like some good content left, so I guess I will finish that up before plunking down $40 for DQV.

All told, I really enjoyed the game, but of the three DQ games I've finished (Dragon Warrior 1 back when I was tiny, DQVIII a few years back, and now this) I still enjoyed VIII the most, mostly because I'm a heathen and was a real sucker for the world they created for that game. Speaking of I need to go back and replay it one day soon and see if it holds up gameplay wise... the brisk pace of IV's battles was excellent and a welcome relief from stuff like the FFIV DS remake (which I was anxiously awaiting, and still haven't finished due to my severe dislike of the slow, clunky, and unfun combat... such a shame).

I know there's a thread for it, but is DQV (and VI for that matter, assuming the remake is the same length as the SNES one) approximately the same length as IV, or do they get into crazy DQVII playtime numbers? I'll never beat that damn game.

They're both considerably shorter than 7. I would say that 5 is about 20-30% longer than 4, and 6 is a bit longer still. Neither is going to take you anywhere near 80 hours, unless you decide to max every job in 6.

I've been playing this off and on since it released, but since I now have Chrono Trigger and DQV sitting on my shelf, I want to finish it up. I finally beat Balzack and made it to Chapter 5!

Question: Is it going to be too hard to play with Torneko in my main party? He's my favorite character so far and I want to include him, even if it means a little more grinding.

Such an unfortunately named villain.

I'm actually about where you are... I don't really want to rush through it, but V has me excited (even though it's basically the same thing).

Cool, thanks. I suppose I would have picked them up regardless, but I like to know what I'm up against. And no, I highly doubt I'd max all the jobs in 6 if my past experience with job-based RPGs are any indication.

Nah, Torneko's random stuff he does is generally semi-beneficial at least. I used him all the time in the NES one and the first time I played the PS1 version.

Awesome, thanks. I'm grinding my hero up as we speak.

My first DQ ever, 12 hours in, just got Alena back in The Chosen.

This game is just not clicking with me. I'm a huge JRPG guy but I've never played a game where grinding was a prerequisite of advancing to the next section. And by next section I mean a few steps that way to a cave I can see from here. Go to a town, grind, cave, next town, grind, cave is about all this game has been. And I've done my fair share of grinding in RPGs, I don't mind grinding, it's just so boring in this game.. There are no treasures or puzzles in the 'dungeons', no customization of characters since I've been buying the same gear since the beginning of the game, all spells are pretty much shared by the respective classes except for 1-2 unique spells, the raising/saving mechanic is extremely cumbersome, and I'll just stop there..

Still, I play the game because I keep hearing how wonderful it is from you guys and I'm just waiting for that big BANG where everything will come together. But truthfully the story is a complete mess.

Oh, hi, you are the chosen one, we have been looking for you, now together we go slay the bad guy. Yay.
I don't trust you (here's a token of faith) Now I trust you!
The lighthouse has an evil light (here's the good light) Now it's good again!

I'm praying the Zenethia part or whatever it is is where it finally all makes sense?

I know this is a 20 year old game and I wasn't expecting any grand, epic adventure. But it just feels like every main character you've had is just blindly going from place to place because of what one random NPC said..and sometimes finding that one NPC can be a pain. Maybe that party chat thing I heard they took out makes all the difference? Torneko's chapter is the only chapter I felt like I knew what was going on and everything was clearly laid out. It also felt like a puzzle getting the 60k (I don't know if there's a specific way but I just bought stuff from one town and sold it at that castle where they were low on armor for like twice the price. Then I just bought the stuff for the King's order. I'm guessing the other way is to grind that dungeon on the right for the drops.)

Anyway, I'm going to complete it because NOW I hear DQ5 is really the amazing one..so I want to experience the whole trilogy. But so far this is a very bland and easy RPG with some really antiquated mechanics that I wish they upgraded along with the graphics.

Edit: I just read SabinFigaro's post where he says he only grinded for maybe an hour throughout his entire run. I don't really see how that's possible. I never fled from any battles in the beginning 4 chapters and yet always came to a section where mobs were clearly hitting me for 15-20 and there was no way I could progress without grinding for experience or money to buy better gear. Did I miss some sort of difficulty option or is this game playing with me?

I'm on the last 3 monsters to complete the monster book, but I can't find Number 151 (Shadow something). He should be in the Bonus Dungeon, but where exactly? There are so many different areas.

I grinded once early in the game and I managed to beat it out without losing a single battle (minus the last one when I forgot to blow the horn my first attempt). I never used holy protection or holy water to limit monsters either though.

Ok. Wow.
I have no idea what happened.

I bought this game in early november and just could not get into it, no matter how hard I tried.
I put 5 hours into it and hated almost every minute of it.

I just popped this back in my DS last night to kill a bit of time before Battlestar and instantly got sucked into it. It's like a completely different game from when I started it.

Really the only bad thing I have to say about it is I hate the "accents." Sometimes they don't even seem intentional - just like bad localization. Like when you win a battle it says "The Enemy Are Defeated."

Anyway, It's a super fun game.

The first chapter can be a doozy. But once you get beyond that, the game's brilliant.
Also, "The enemy are defeated" is very much proper English.

"Enemy" can function as either a singular or plural noun. This game assumes plural. Ditto with similar words that innately imply more than one individual, such as "party," "company," etc.

I would say "The Enemy Are Defeated", but I'm English.

...

DQIV was my first Dragon Quest game and I loved it!

I finished it last week. Well, finished in that I beat chapter 5. I'm still faffing around with the post-game content without making a great deal of progress.

Post chapter 5 records:

Time taken till ending - 30:20
Battles - 1634
Monsters defeated - 4438
Total gold - 220997
Victories - 1623
Times wiped out - 0
Times fled - 10
Max. damage in one hit - 369
Clear level - 40

Title - Anti-resurrectionist.

And I liked the accents.

I personally would say "The enemy is defeated" or the "The enemies are defeated."

Idk, I guess it makes sense. Anyway, I just crossed the teleporter to Endor.

It's the same reason some say "Nintendo are winning the console wars!!!!!!!" instead of "Nintendo is winning the console wars!!!!!!!"

I just did something really stupid.
In chapter 3 when you get the steel strongbox, I didn't roll one of those small boulders into the room with me.. and I picked up the safe of the button and now I can't get out! :lol :lol

Is there a way I can set it down again? Or am I fucked?

I did this once, as far as I know you're screwed. Could be wrong though.

set the box down

So, I figured out that you have to examine the floor near the button and you read the engravings and then it prompts you set the box down.

I kept trying to "discard" it and it wouldn't let me.

Also, I got that crazy 3500$ sword when I was working at the shop and I'm like suuuper powerful. :lol

If you want to make things fun later, purchase and bag a ton of those Cautery Swords, to sell in later chapters... ~~~

Chapter 5 is where the game really begins, but you'll never be able to make money faster than when in Chapter 3, so it makes sense to use Torneko's ridiculous money-making abilities while you can to make the first batch of equipment upgrades in Chapters 4 and 5 painless.

So I got this today and started playing despite not being done with DQ3r yet :X
Couldn't help myself! Anyway, the game's awesome. Currently at the beginning of chapter 2 grinding away (reached lvl 5 I think) to get some of the equipment from the first town.

Mega-bump!

Finally finished this 100% today. Got all of
the bestiary completed. Received Psaro's special armor and added Psaro, Queen of the Desert to Hoffman's Place (by defeating Foo and Chow seven times. Also, defeated Aamon for the "happy" ending.

Chapter 5 completion stats...

Chapter 6 with everything done!

....and with that, I'm off to start DQV! Woot.

Mine from the Japanese version back in 2007:

Chapter 6 complete:

Everything (and I mean *everything*) complete (including all forms of bonus boss, 100% town, Jump Festa town characters, etc.):

Finally finished chapter 6 (since I kept forgetting that it existed)

time taken till..................029:29

Total Gold from Battles...121827
Victories..........................769
Times Wiped Out.............19
Times Fled.......................47
Max Damage..................296
Clear Level......................36

Not anything close to 100% all content though :lol

I'm stuck repeatedly selling swords at the beginning of Tubby's chapter. Help me out GAF.

Wait until someone sells you a Cautery Sword [and DO NOT sell it back to anyone], then talk to the inn's owner and find the iron safe in a cave to the north...

Due to the bag..you don't *really* need to wait on that sword in the DS version. Just buy what's most expensive in a normal shop if you want and you'd still have too much money. That sword was most useful when you could only hold 8 or 12 items, not ~111.

It's still the best sword for the early part of Chapter 5 though, so it might be worth waiting for regardless of profit motives.

If you're looking for speed then yeah, you can safely ignore it.

Steel Sword isn't bad early on. I just go and buy a Dragon Killer anyway (but you get the swords in the bag automatically at the start of Ch5 in the DS one huh?).

Sorry for the bump, but I'm in Chapter 5 and I wanted to know what's the best team I can make right now.

Thanks!
I personally use hero, Meena, Maya and Alena. I think it's a well-balanced team. Some people like to use Kiryl for kabuff, and that's fine too. Alena is the strongest attacker in the game, especially if you get her falcon knife earrings.

I haven't played the game since I asked the question, and now one boss is kicking my ass :(

It's the boss you fight when the Hero meets Ragnar. (some kind of lion) I don't know if I'm underpowered (my team is lvl. 17-18) but I can't beat him. Do you have any advice? If not, I'll have to grind...

Thanks again!

You should be able to beat him at that level. What's your team like? There's not a lot of strategy to that fight, since your options are limited... hero and Alena attack*, Meena on healing, Maya casting sap and offensive spells. You could also switch Kiryl in for kabuff on one turn.

* Buying some falcon knife earrings for Alena from Rosehill is a great idea -- if you haven't, go northeast from the town where you first get the boat (can't remember its name in the English version), past the lighthouse, and you'll find it

I also got stuck there. I just went around the world exploring and leveling for a while. Don't remember which level I was but he was much easier after that.

went looking for some DS rpg's to play and got this brand new for £10?!

dqm monsters joker is still £30 (most new DS games are £30 here, £15 pre-owned).

Picked this up yesterday at Best Buy; guess they're liquidating their older games for 50%. This was the only decent game I saw, though.

Gonna start it tonight. I misplaced my copy of DQVIII so I've been wantin' some DQ action.
