Dragon Quest VII 3DS almost was not localized

I hope they push it as well as MH4G, with big ads in the subway and whatnot.

But since we don't have a release date for France / EU yet, I'm not holding my breath. :/

Look, let's be honest

This game is going to bomb, anyway. It doesn't matter when it is released, how much marketing they give it, how much it costs, it will bomb and bomb hard.

All those factors might move the needle slightly, but even if every single person that begged and petitioned for the game to bring it over bought it on day one, I doubt it will cross 50k units.
Wonder if the real value is to have a localization ready for other re-releases. iOS/android is an option outside of Japan now! If they throw it on PS4/Steam/wherever they're ready to go!

Or just to help set the stage for DQXI and other games, whichever.

You can now stop eating freedom fries, and give them their original name - thanks.

Let's hope this means we will get the game BEFORE the US, considering DQ9 sold quite a bit in europe (more than US) and Toriyama is quite a god in France thanks to Dragon ball and his other works.

Perhaps, although premium JRPGs are generally selling better on 3DS than any of those systems.

I know it's been discussed, but I forget. Why couldn't they utilize the PSX translation again? Was it poorly done with grammatical errors and stuff? Or do they just not have it anymore?

This was a ground-up localization from scratch right?
They remade the game from the ground-up, removing tedious sections and adding things. The PSX translation would no longer fit exactly in every dialogue box. Also, I'm sure there's a legality issue with using a translation that was created by another team.

I'm psyched. Merci beaucoup, French Fans!

People be ready to recieve dragon quest as early Christmas gifts!

Now why do you have to go and crush my spritit.

Preordered and ready.

I just hope against all hope this doesn't superbomb though. If it does...oh man. =(

I knew my passive aggressive tweets would come through :')

So that's what, Dark Souls PC, Xenoblade and DQ7 as some major petition-made realities?

Digimon was literally only localized because of its vocal fanbase, and it ended up being the most successful Digimon game in over a decade (as far as I know).

I'm hoping for 50K (35K launch month) myself. DQV/VI were 70-90K last I saw, so 50K in the last (probably) good year of the system's life isn't bad. Same for DQVIII. Don't let us down, Nintendo!

Moral of the story... Next time you really want a localization, yes petitions are nice but sending actual letters to the company is better. If we ever have another Xenoblade or DQ7 scenario, that's what I'll do.

Yeah, thought that was interesting. Mostly that letters were cited as the reason for them changing their minds.

I'm still really, really glad this is on the way. The game just looks great.

Wait, so are you saying that tweeting thinly-veiled threats isn't as effective as a kind letter? I've been doing it wrong!
not really

Kay, now it is time for us to make a petition for Digimon 3DS to come here right? Anyone with me here? Bamco will listen for sure right?....Right???T_T

I'd like to think my spamming of "LOCALIZE DRAGON QUEST IN THE WEST" as the answer for every question on those Club Nintendo surveys for every game I registered made a difference, however small it may be.

So according to an interview given by Polygon (I'm on mobile so it's hard to link), Square is potentially looking toward Builders success in the West to decide if a DQXI localization is worth it

Proud to be part of the french fanbase !

Now let's enjoy... Persona 5, never, in Europe.

I'm kidding, not never, just 7 years late, untranslated. Nice.

I feel like S-E has come such a long way in recent years in listening to fan demands. Good to see. And I can't wait to play DQVII.

Hah, Square gonna Square. Builders looks rad though.

I would think the PS4 version is a lock. But the 3DS version is pure magic, so I'm sure that one is at risk.

Kudos to France for making our dreams come true, start writing those DQ XI letters frenchies!

I have a good feeling about DQ11. I can't believe they wouldn't localize a new mainline DQ game. They always have and those games have always done pretty good IIRC.

I'd consider DQVII "mainline", even if it's a remake of an older game it's still a new Dragon Quest title. I honestly believe Square gave up on the series after the DS remakes flopped and IX failing to meet their expectations (even if they were a tad bit outrageous). I'm hopeful for XI but I'm expecting quite a long wait for that one, and we can almost forget about the 3DS version.

Wait...I thought Nintendo was localizing DQ7? Is SE actually localizing it?

One of the most common misconceptions out there is that Nintendo localizes any third party pick-ups, which is generally not the case. Nintendo simply funds the localizations and handles the marketing and distribution, while the company of the game in question does the actual work, or at least acts as the localization manager for the company that they do hire to do the real legwork. The only exception that comes to mind has been Professor Layton: Level 5 handles the NA versions, while NOE takes care of the EU versions, which is why most of the characters have different VAs. This is why PLvsAA was an interesting case, since both NA and EU had the NOE localization and cast in what was assuredly a cost-saving measure for both Level 5 and Nintendo.

With the stage having now been set to push for DQ XI (11) localization, it truly should be both games, the PS4 HD game and the 3DS game.

I know it's been discussed, but I forget. Why couldn't they utilize the PSX translation again?

Well, putting aside the technical issues with it and a style that isn't compatible with the current approach taken to the franchise, the remake isn't identical to the older version; the scripts aren't going to match up exactly line for line anyway.

I honestly believe Square gave up on the series after the DS remakes flopped and IX failing to meet their expectations (even if they were a tad bit outrageous).

I think people have these weird ideas about what Square-Enix "thinks" about the franchise, and it leads to these bizarre conclusions, like that it makes sense for them to bring over DQ Builders on a whim but they won't consider bringing over a full main series entry.

I'm not even slightly concerned about DQ11 on PS4 making it out here, regardless of whatever random people are saying in interviews right now.

DQ11 3DS is the one people ought to be making shrieking petitions and writing letters in blood about. The NX delay has been helpful in giving it a tiny chance.

Otherwise the hope will have to be that NX handheld is the one that gets a DQ11 port, not NX console.

I wouldn't be surprised. DQ7 was localized before and seemed to not be well received at all. I'm still kind of surprised people were asking for it.

Then again, maybe releasing a PS1 RPG with dated graphics the same year as Final Fantasy X (and the PS2) probably wasn't the best idea?

Hopefully it at least sells well enough for S-E to decide the localization cost is worth it.

I thank everyone that took the time to contact them. I never played the original DQVII so this will be my first experience with the game.

I didn't say it didn't sell (It probably didn't though) people who bought it largely had bad impressions of the game and generally the complaints were not limited to the graphics.

Generally speaking if graphics are a deal breaker, you can tell and skip the game.
