/shrug random encounters never bothered me on the PS2 version. If you want to explore without being bothered there was always holy water.
Emulated, the PS2 version is a ton faster. There is no waiting in battle.Just the faster battles is enough of a selling point for me. The PS2 version had to load every time you used a special ability, and there were loads of zero cost abilities that amounted to "normal attack plus special effect".
Since we're talking about the orchestra mod for DQ8 on 3DS, can it be used with the retail cart? I would rather have the save for the game on my cart, not my console. I'd be crushed if I lost a save file 80 hours into the game because I lost my 3DS or it broke.
I assume that Luma's layeredfs compatibility should be able to run the orchestra mod, but was it ever released in such a format?

Edit: Nevermind! Just after posting the question I found the answer on the 3DSHacks subreddit![]()
Yes and no.
What you have to do is install full CFW on the 3DS. Then you have to dump your cartridge, and dump the save file. You have to then install the orchestra tracks over the dump, recompile it and install it to your 3DS, as a digital title. So you can't overwrite the orchestra mod to the cart.
You can ask for more details, but that's the gist of it. It's a looong process, but it was worth it to me to have the orchestra mod plus all the benefits of custom firmware.
Does anyone know if there is either a fan translation of the Japanese ps2 version or a mod to add the ps2 Japanese versions orchestra music to the USA ps2 version?
This is kinda outdated, since you can also run the orchestrated mod on a cart now. Doesn't overwrite the cart, but you can load the game up with the orchestrated files on the SD card.
Also, I don't think it was brought up, but with CFW you can easily backup your save with JK's Save Manager. So in theory, if you lose your 3DS or break it, if you get another 3DS and mod it you can easily transfer your saves there. I already backed up my completed Pokedex saves for Pokemon for example.
Whenever Sugiyama dies or retires you can be assured of thee thing:I really hope they replace him with someone else. It's not like he makes great music anymore. SE has tons of great composers like Hamauzu, Yoko Shimomura and Keiichi Okabe.
How does that work exactly? Right now I've installed the modded version of the game on my New 3DS. I would much rather play it on my New 3DS XL, though, but don't want to risk installing it there, since that one is connected to the internet.
I regret that I didn't buy the digital version tbh.

Still requires CFW so if you're concerned about modding the 3DS being connected to the internet it's probably not an option for you.
You basically install the newest version of Luma and then download the Dragon Quest 8 LayeredFS patch that's floating around the 'net. (Google it).
There's one for DQ7 as well.
Now I'm curious. What toxic opinions???Yeah but this guy is literally interfering with their business.
Any company with sense would of kicked this shithead to the curb ages ago.
The fact that they still want to be associated with a man with such toxic opinions is baffling enough.

Im sorry I don't comb through hundreds of posts. Thanks for the response. I did read about him holding DQ music hostage but didn't know he was a WW2 denier. He's also super old so I wonder if that kind of shit is more common with the older, more traditional guard of citizens. But yeah he's a shithead.I installed the LayeredFS patches for both DQ VII and VIII. Easy peasy. I'm still amazed by how far 3DS homebrew has come. I remember back in the day, all the hoops you had to go through to load the Homebrew Launcher. It's nothing short of incredible.
Dude, seriously. It's the second time you do this. First with the QoL improvements, now with this. Read the thread, because it's been said already a couple of times. The man is a WW2 denier: he doesn't acknowledge any of the atrocities that Japan did during the war.
Since when was the ps2 version 60fps? Or is there a hack/patch on pcsx2 to increase the framerate?Emulated, the PS2 version is a ton faster. There is no waiting in battle.
And going in and out of random battles is much faster than the 3DS.
Also 60fps of course.

This still doesn't explain why the random denying of orquestrated music for the west while Japan gets them now (except for DQXI).
People are really overselling the orchestral music. It's nice, but the MIDI soundtrack is still one of the best ever produced for a jRPG. It sounds fantastic on 3DS.
You know it's weird I am not usually a graphics snob, but i am still up in the air over the graphics at this point. It and being able to play on my Samsung KS8000 at 1080p via my pc are the only reason I am considering going ps2 version.

The graphics aren't nearly as a big of a deal as some people make out.
The worse if them all.how does the android version stack up?

Not port-begging by any means but if there is a game that deserves a remake / remaster into 1080p and 60fps than it is this game. Just look at how damn good this game looks on emulation...

So I have made my decision. I am going 3ds. I picked up my copy a little bit ago and patched the orchestral music back into the game using luma3ds. I want to thank everyone in this thread for your feedback and helping me with this decision!
I am a fan of the series since I was a child. My family had a NES when I was 8 and we got the first Dragon Warrior game via the Nintendo power subscription deal. It was my first ever rpg. I loved it. I also have beaten Dragon Warrior IV. I own and need to play through the DQ IV DS remake, DQ V DS, DQ VI DS, DQ VII 3DS, and now DQ VIII 3ds.
I am really excited to play DQ8 for the first time!
So what makes the 3ds version so Superior? I am actually thinking about getting it but I have the PS2 version already.
- The 3DS version adds 2 new party members
- It has visible enemy encounters.
- The battles can be sped up
- The alchemy pot now makes items instantly and you can make multiples of an item at once with it. (there's also new recipes I believe)
- There's a camera feature
- There's more story stuff and a new ending
I'm probably missing other things as well. I think there's a new dungeon or two. I haven't finished it yet but it's a really nice version so far and it's a bit sad seeing it dismissed so readily on GAF.
I'm going to quote brinstar here. The quality of life improvements in the Nintendo 3DS version, for me, made the Nintendo 3DS version the best version for me, even though I've played both versions.

These are fine additions but is it missing anything from the ps2 era? aside from downgraded graphics from ps2 version.

Some costumes were censored, due to the CERO being more strict with the guidelines to achieve an "A" (All Ages) rating.

And some cutscenes were censored as well, apparently because Yuji Horii didn't like the original cutscenes.

Not an accurate comparison since P3P edits a lot of content out. VIII does not. It actually has more in the 3DS version.Reading this thread it seems like this is a Persona 3 situation again between FES and P3P. The handheld version willhave better gameplay, but the console one will have superior presentation. It makes it difficult to recommend a definitive version, and also choose which one to play, if any.
The answer is the same with Persona 3. Hope Square release another version on PS4/Switch with the best of both worlds!
Wise choice. Although an easy one... do you want to play an 50+ hour game confined to the TV or be able to take it wherever you go? Depends on your lifestyle, but I've enjoyed playing this game waiting for an oil change or on public transport, etc.
