Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 -- Anticipation Thread

Since I live in the UK, this game will satisfy me till Brawl comes out. This is one game where my love for DBZ is revived. Although this isn't really a HUGE jump from the previous game, the Wii version will have ONLINE.

This game is pretty much overlooked just because of the DBZ license, but the Budokai series have been extremely fun, as well as being the ultimate fanservice to DB fans. The Tenkaichi branch isn't really a fighter, but a DB-Sim, and really captures the essence of the anime fights. Which, you have to admit - even if you don't like the anime - is awesome. It's out in November for both US and Europe.

New features (Wiki, Wiki, Jungle is Massive!)

* Blast Combo - Players can now kick their opponent into the air and attack them again by quickly teleporting behind them.

* Sonic Sway - This technique simply allows the player to evade the opponents attacks. Since it takes longer for the attacker to get back into their fighting stance than it does the player dodging the attacks, the attacker is left with an open defense. The one evading can then quickly counter-attack their opponent. However, this feature only applies to physical attacks aimed for the upper part of the body; if the opponent aims for the player's legs, for example, they cannot evade the attacks.

* Z-Counter - The ability to counter attacks by teleporting behind the enemy. This is a technique seen in the series many times.

* Z-Burst Dash - An enhanced version of the dash attack from the previous game, this time the player can zig-zag to dodge attacks or surprise the enemy.

* The addition of a new day and night system allows players playing as certain Saiyans to harness the power of the moon to transform into a Great Ape.

* By adding a new Battle Replay mode, players can now capture all of their favourite fights and watch them again later on. There are also several camera angles you can use to swap views of the battle.

* The Wii version no longer uses the sensor bar. The game instead will use gestures and will provide a little animation at the bottom left corner of the screen to demonstrate how to perform techniques.

* During Story mode, called Dragon History within the game, quotes appear at the bottom of the screen as the player fights and change based on their fighting. Who wins and loses causes a change in the story line, essentially making the game a what-if scenario all the way through.

* A new Z-Point system replaces the leveling system from Tenkaichi 2. The more Z-Points a character has, the more Z-items can be equipped.

I really wish they released a Budokai Tenkaichi on the Xbox 360, although the inclusion of online play is a huge bonus. I cannot wait to pick this up.:D

:lol I wonder how many people will get that.

I popped into this thread thinking there was a PS3 version, guess I'll leave now :-/

Well, they ARE developing a new series for PS3, if I recall correctly. It's something I read here on GAF, but I don't have actual proof...

Ever since Budokai 3, every DBZ game has been a stepback. There wasn't much difference in combat between Budokai 1 and 2, and I doubt this one will add anything significant.

I'm still gonna give this a try, but with the characters being little more than "pallette swaps", I can't get excited for it. Maybe if they had original storylines instead of reusing the same Story Mode which has been available on DBZ Budokai, Budokai 2, Budokai 3, Shin Budokai, Budokai Tenkaichi, Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and Super DBZ - just this gen - I'd be more excited about it.

As it stands, neither single player or multiplayer has me excited. Damn the DBZ fan in me for still forcing me to play this.

There's a PS2 version, but unlike the Wii one it doesn't have online play - I think.

The leap from Tenkaichi 1 to Tenkaichi 2 was pretty big. I played the first one a few months ago and it was pretty much unplayable compared to the second =X

Gosh, I know. The new Dragon History mode promises "What if's", but they'll only be short branches from the main sagas. They've had *so* many opportunities to create a few new sagas, and even a bunch of original fusions (Goku and Gohan fusion would really wank the fans), but they decide to put in every insignificant DBZ character instead. They did the original fusion thing once or twice, though (Yamcha and Tien?).

Incredible :D I must admit, it made me laugh out loud, brought the memories back =P

If I can get it cheap, I might pick this up for PS2, don't really mind about the online play.

Gosh, I know. The new Dragon History mode promises "What if's", but they'll only be short branches from the main sagas.

Some of the "What ifs" briefly shown in the 8 min video seem very wild though, not only minor variations, like #8 fighting against #16 while speaking something about protecting Goku and Akkuman fighting Mecha-Freeza.

There wasn't much difference in combat between Budokai 1 and 2, and I doubt this one will add anything significant.

Don't you know that the ki blast button can be used to trigger different kinds of secondary hits if you use it during combos? There was a significant improvement in number and variety of available attacks with the secondary button between BT1 and BT2.

The leap from Tenkaichi 1 to 2 was significant because Tenkaichi 1 played like shit and they somewhat fixed that for the sequel. The characters still controlled pretty much the same tho, and the battle system itself was almost unchanged, save for transformations, which again are basically pallette swaps.

As for the fusions, they had Cell absorb Krillin instead of 18 in B1, Gokule (Goku + Hercule/Satan) and Tiencha in B2, and that's it I think.

And while new sagas are nice, they also need new characters. Fighting Freeza is only fun until the 50th time. BT2 had some what-ifs similar to what you described, but they were pretty lame most of the time because they still used the same damn characters.

Not exactly. Most of the character still had just repeat animations (sometimes the same character would have it twice), and all characters would pull the combos with the same inputs. All characters had all the possible combo variants too, IIRC.

I haven't bought a DBZ game even though I love DBZ because, well, they've been a bit crap. I came really close with Tenkaichi 2 but then I heard of the new features of Tenkaichi 3 so I held off. So this might finally be the one.

You should get Budokai 3, it's pretty good and the combat is very intense. Specially if you play with someone.

I don't really know many people that play games unfortunately. And nobody who could play this with me. But I'll look into it - thanks! :)

One new mode that seems interesting but is receiving almost no focus is the "Sim Dragon", one of the modes available in the Ultimate Battle mode of this game, which involves managing training and adventures of a character during 10 days in preparation for a battle. The management, training and talking to other characters in that mode are done through menus, not real time, but it still seems like an interesting concept.

The characters still controlled pretty much the same tho, and the battle system itself was almost unchanged, save for transformations, which again are basically pallette swaps.

Every character has a single preset standard combo which only varies in speed and damage and most secondary attacks (the elements which add variation to the melee combat in this game) are shared between many characters, but considering the huge cast available, I think they've done a decent job - especially considering that this is the closest a game has ever gotten to emulating an actual DBZ battle.

I also like how the transformations are treated as basically separate characters - often with a completely different moveset, as far as 'different movesets' go in this game, besides one recycled signature Blast 2 or Ultimate (though there are exceptions to that rule, like Gohan and Vegeta (second form) who seem to reuse every single one of their Blast 1s and Blast 2s).

Then there's the fanservice too... Tenkaichi was the first DBZ game that got Tenshinhan's fighting stance actually right, for one (unlike in the Budokai series, Dimps had just given him Yamcha's moves in B2 and then kept those same moves in B3, even though they revamped Yamcha completely again for that game).

I'm a casual fan of the series and I figure I'd probably enjoy the game mostly because I haven't touched the series since Budokai 2. But both this series and the Tony Hawk series are always games that I'm interested in when I read up on them, but wind up never getting for a variety of different reasons.

In the case of this one, I'll probably end up not getting it because it comes out the same day as Mario and Resident Evil.

I haven't played a DBZ game since Budokai 2. I thought about picking up the first game for wii but it slipped of my radar. I'm looking forward to this since it has wifi and almost every character in the DBZ universe. The fighting looks great also.

Fuck, Budokai Tenkaichi got old after the first one, and to me the Wii controls fucked everything up. =(

I want Budokai IV for 360/PS3 with online play.

You guys need to play multiplayer with someone at a similar level to you. That's probably why you got bored of it - you only played the SP.

How the heck can they continue making these games?!

This will be the first one of these fighting games that focuses on the original Dragon Ball too, not only Z and GT (though previous games had a few Dragon Ball characters too) and the Wii version has online.

Didn't we have Blast Combo and Sonic Sway in Budokai Tenkaichi 2?

The description in the first message isn't really complete.

Blast Combos, as the name indicate, involve making Blast attacks part of the actual combo, rather than having to stop attacking to start one. After the teleport, a Beam attack can be automatically launched.

Sonic Sway is a dodge maneuver that doesn't involve teleporting, nor uses ki. The character bends to avoid melee attacks if the defender has the right timing for his button presses. A few characters, like Final Form Freeza (but not 100%) could do something similar in BT2, but only for a single hit, so it was basically useless.

Thanks for making it clear and easy to understand -- these additions aren't as IN YOUR FACE as others, but I can imagine that they'll really improve the game.

I hope you can still teleport behind an opponent and still spam the shit out of the attack button like you could in Tenkaichi 2.

I wish they would just get rid of the Z Items altogther. They should just make it so that you level up the characters with exp.

man i really want this game, but i cant see myself playing it w/ the wiimote. i suck at it even in metroid. the button presses in this game are way too fast for me to not be played w/ a reg controller

do these games feature japanese voices? dbz games are pretty much unplayable for me without the japanese voices. the dubs do a horrible job as conveying the intensity of the fights in games and in the show.

You could play on a Classic Controller in BT2; I don't see why they would have taken it out for BT3.

At least, I hope not. I could only play that way...

I'm totally looking forward to this. I liked the anime back in the day believe it or not.

Cell saga and onward, anyway.

Oh shit! I just noticed that. That's so awesome. Day 1 for me. Yamcha and Yajirobe shall save the universe!

I'm basically waiting for impressions on how the scenario of making the entire game a what-if works... If it's executed well, that'll probably be the difference maker that drives me to buy at $50 (or $40 if that's what it costs) instead of waiting for the price drop. I always kind of hated that most of the characters were worthless in battle from the Android saga onward.

Yeah, I really liked the anime too but from the Freeza saga till the end (Buu Saga).

BTW, someone just released a high-res Goku for Mugen. Its pure WIN!

It's the online which is driving me to buy it. I haven't got high hopes for the What If Mode. I have a feeling it'll be like this.

Android Saga:

1. Fight Android 18 as Vegeta
2. If you lose against Android 18, fight Android 18 as Krillin. Cutscene with Krillin going "Vegeeeta!" Then flies in to fight Android 18.
3. If you lose against Android 18, fight Android 18 as Piccollo.
4. If you lose against Android 18, GAME OVER.

Stuff like that =X
