Dragon's Crown is Vanillaware's most expensive project

Remember that for some reason some gamers don't think 2D and isometric should be priced beyond $20 it's one of the reasons of there aren't many beat em ups or isometric RPGs these days.
That's so said, because animating 2D is way more expensive and time consuming.

And remember that this game lasts 20 hours at character, i rather spend 60€ for a 20(120 with all the characters) hours 2d game than a 6 hours AAA 3d game like cod or others.

Lol, you so crazy Index. I think it's going to sell 60,000 units first month in the US. No idea about Japan but based on sales of current PS3 and Vita games, I would say 200,000 LTD total.
I don't know in the us, but imo you are underestimating it in japan, there are good chances that it will break the 100k sales on vita alone the first week, if you add the ps3 sales it will make way more than 200k on the first week alone imo.

My friends and I were going to get it but ffxiv is also releasing in the same month, I'll pick it up some where down the line.

I'm actually more excited to pick this up than the last of us, maybe it's been a while since I played a beat'em'up, and I like 2d art, doesn't help that I've been playing Trine 2 which is a different genre that focuses on platforming/puzzles and I'm itching for a sidescroller with more action and boss fights.

Hopefully they can make a profit on that game.Dont want them to close down because the game bombs.

Will do my part by getting the PS3 version.

I actually have the feeling it won't bomb at all. You know, in Vanillaware standards. I think it will probably make a profit on Japan alone.

I'm a big time proponent of embracing the full spectrum of the price scale, and applaud Sony's recent effort with Sly 4 and the upcoming Puppeteer. However, when it comes really niche titles like Dragon's Crown or even the recent SMTIV I feel the publisher thinks they can charge a premium for the titles because there is a rapid base out there for those games and it doesn't matter what the launch day price is they will buy it. They might try to mask that price with some fan service pack ins like a music CD and/or art book. So yea, I think niche titles operate on a different scale than any other game, they are self aware that they are not blue ocean titles and know exactly who they are targeting. With that comes the knowledge of what price they can price and still get that target crowd to still buy.

That said, they should have made it crossbuy. Though going by this thread they may have made the right decision to not do that because they knew a certain percentage would buy both.

The dev costs associated with developing a smooth online infrastructure, testing, servers, network security, the devs they probably didn't have on staff... It's entirely added to the cost of developing an offline game.

There's almost none of that. The game just uses PSN for matchmaking. There are no dedicated servers at all. In fact, when Index filed for bankruptcy, the Atlus Japan site put up a notice specifically stating that the online infrastructure of Dragon's Crown is completely handled by PSN and not any private servers, so there's no danger of multiplayer being affected by the company's troubles. Vanillaware already made an online game before this which DID use its own servers - Grand Knights History. So it's not like this is the first time they're doing anything online. That game had a much more substantial online mode too.

Don't forget development costs are but one small part of the whole picture. Atlus has likely spent 10 million promoting it worldwide and then you have disc production and shipping.

What's the retail price then ? it might have been their most expensive game but it doesn't feel right paying the same moneys I paid for the Last of us. Sony has the Puppeteer nicely priced.

1) Dragon's Crown is $50. Not cross buy.
2) Your opinion is an obtuse one that I can not agree with.

I can still see where he is coming from. If there are two games that have same pricepoints the people will go for the big budget blockbuster no matter how good the other game is. I think low price point is a big reason for the surprisingly successful Sly 4. Also the pricepoint is a big reason why FUSE did absolutely terrible. A game like that you can see a mile away will just bomb like hell with 70€ pricetag. Industry needs to use lower pricepoints more often. I'm not really sure this applies to DC tho, I think it will do relatively well especially with a small budget like that.

If I had to choose between this and TLoU, I would choose this.

I will be playing this for years. I will randomly fire this game up and play through a level or two way down the road. I played TLoU and will never touch it again.

Also, it's 10 bucks less than standard MSRP.
