Drive assist is for me MK8 deluxe's greatest feature

You should have seen the face of the four year old who managed to come fourth with the assists on at work. I think I just turned him into a video gamer. :)

How young people survived the previous Mario kart without this feature? They were Wizards?

From personal experience, my then 4/5 year old daughter, just didnt play it. She tried and loved the way it looked but she got too bored and frustrated with it so didnt play it. Now my 2 year old son can play and not come last and have a blast with it. Its basically widened the age limit and audience by making the game more accessible.

It is awesome, and not just for kids. I have plenty of friends who are total non-gamers and the driving assist has let them join in on the fun without feeling like utter failures.

Great feature. Now they just need to get rid of kart stats because that's another barrier to entry for anyone who isn't familiar with the game. Or give us a mode to just turn it off.

Yeah. My last Mario Kart game was Double Dash.

Mario kart seems to evolved into a game with a deep learning curve.

200cc is like Phantom Wipeout.

Of course items do have a random factor as well.

This. And as someone who picks up and plays every single Mario Kart, this isn't a plus for me. I like to be able to ask anyone to pick up a controller and play, and despite all of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's awesomeness, it's still a bit complicated in the end compared to 64 or DD.

It's the reason why my wife is now hooked to Mario Kart. It's a miracle: she hates videogames (part of it because she's a bad loser, the other part because she sucks at it.). Now she beats our girls and it's an awesome family moment.

Stats are invisible unless you happen to press + (the same place where the smart steering option is hidden away). I'd guess it's for this very reason. The kart screen just looks like a set of cosmetic choices to anyone who doesn't know better. Newbies don't even have to know the different stats exist.
