Driveclub delayed, PSN+ replacement is Contrast

So now, I get 3 free games. I just have to wait for the racer freebie a few more months to get a better free product. Sounds good to me!

PS4 the system that keeps on giving free stuff.

This is most attention driveclub has gotten, by far. but now some of you make it sound like a system seller lol

First PS4 bad news in a long time. That may have a hand in this.

It was going to be a perfect launch until this. Honestly I'm not affected by this because I was more excited with next year's games and it's mostly multiplatform to boot.

MGSV/FFXV/KH3/Titan Fall/Destiny/Quantum Break/X/FFXIII-LR are the games I'm most excited with. Other than X and Quantum Break, I would certainly be able to play them on the PS4 which is currently said to be the better multiplatform machine.

Yeah, why not? I won't be getting PS4 till Christmas but I'm planning on "purchasing" every free PS+ game on my PC, in case they aren't free anymore when I do get the console.

Cool, I would assume that as well. Just wondered if anything official came up about it.

Agh, this is maddening, I know as soon as I cancel I will moan to myself (and anyone who will listen) about missing out.

What I don't get about some peeps here saying 'we' are acting like DriveClub was a system seller is that this is a package. In truth none of the launch games are system sellers to me, well Watch Dogs was and PS4 was the place to buy it clearly. If we are honest with ourselves, is Killzone going to get a 9/10 from the fans? Very unlikely, it is a 'good' game. Same as DriveClub being a 'decent' game. And for me Watch Dogs looked great, so to have only one 'good' game left has left the overall package very underwhelming. It may be Killzone is amazing and I am losing out, but none of the other games interest me that much. Driveclub I haven't commented on here or elsewhere but read all the news, watched the videos and been very interested in it. I may have bought it, I might not... I won't know now as it is delayed. So I feel like I missed out. Watch Dogs is the real blow, this is just the straw that broke the camels back. Killzone I think I can wait for, but still being indecisive.

Sony is really in trouble with that revised launch line-up. First watchdogs, then this... I'm now only interested in Killzone and that's a 10-hour game (single-player). What would I be doing with my fancy new console after those 10 hours?
Xbox One also lost WatchDogs.
perhaps play multiplayer....?

Ugh... very upset at this. Was excited to play it but what can we do. Seems they should have seen the writing on the wall earlier and not let it get this late.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I wish that the xbone would come out in my territory this year. Forza, Ryse and DR all look pretty fun.
I guess you'd have to play all those other "things" that aren't real games. Like Resogun, and Contrast. And the F2P games. Sorry! I used the word "game". And the F2P "things".

This thread is getting hilarious. With the Not Coming To ___ lists and all.

I guess I'm in the minority for thinking this is great news! I didn't care about Drive Club. I'd probably boot up the PS+ edition and quickly lose interest. However, Contrast is pretty high up on my list of launch titles. I'd have happily paid for it.

Potential consumers aren't asking "which one has more games" and compiling list wars and counting the number that aren't available on the other platform...

They're asking themselves "which one has more games that I want to get."

That may be the XB1 for some people. That may be the PS4 for some people. It may, I suspect, be neither for a lot of people as well, where the games they want are on both platforms anyway.

This will weigh into purchasing decisions alongside a bevy of other questions they're likely asking such as "what are my friends buying" and "which one is better value."

I think both launch lineups are weak. I have no interest in forza, killzone or dead rising. driveclub wasn't even on my radar. I dont buy consoles at launch for their amazing titles. I do it cus I want dat sexy new tech :).

I had little interest in Driveclub, but feel bad for the people that were looking forward to this one. Contrast seems like a terrible substitute going by that trailer.

I'm glad I cancelled my preorder ahead of time (joking, cancelled it for unrelated reason). Sony's quickly dropping themselves to second-place console status after a strong start with screw ups like this - things that wouldn't be issues if they'd had a Wipeout in the pipeline for launch.

Who's going to want DC next year with Infamous waiting to be played? They should really have considered moving some of the late-gen PS3 titles to PS4 launch. That's an astounding failure of management IMO.

Right on.

This will be a sales boost for GT6 at least.
I wonder if that factored into the decision...

I definitely think so. DC may be swallowed up by the many Racers on the upcoming months if they didn't do this. It's a wise decision IMO.

Racers launching near console launch : NFS, Forza 5, GT 6, The Crew(before delay) and Project Cars.

I expect this was also the reason for The Crew's delayed and subsequently GTA V has had an influence in Watch Dogs' delay too.

Contrast is a better option than DriveClub for Plus.

Even so I'm sad for the DriveClub.

PS4 still have tons of games... last time I did a list it was 40 launch games vs 25 on Xbone.

Ah well, I am waiting until next year to get my PS4 anyway. But I have to go ahead and give the nod to the Xbox One for the launch games for sure. At least in terms of what appeals to me.

You're still going to get Driveclub PS+ version when it's released. Sony is simply giving Contrast as a "we're sorry for the delay" which they didn't have to do. They don't owe people anything, delays always happen in gaming.

When Gears of War 3 was delayed did people complain that Epic owed people another game to take its place?

When Grand Theft Auto 5 was delayed did people complain that Rockstar owed people another game in its place?

Your situations are not at all comparable. Their entire launch has been advertised around the fact Driveclub is included with PS+.

I've since looked up Contrast and it looks like an interesting enough concept but the character design is atrocious. I'm completely non-plussed by it. The difference here is like including Blinx instead of Halo or something.

For me I wasn't going to spend 60 on drive club but had already committed to spending 15/20 on contrast

Now I get to spend 0 on contrast and still get the ps+ drive club

Not ideal but in my situation I'll take it

I'm net positive about this for a different reason: Sony clearly has the long-term health of the system and games in mind, even if it creates problems at launch. That kind of mindset is what I want from a publisher, and I think it bodes well for my enjoyment of the console during the first year.

Contrast works out better for me, as I'm not really into sim racing (or many racing games in general really). It sucks that it's going to be delayed for those who were looking forward to it though.

This is kind of pathetic. If they were going to delay the game it should have been done months ago and Contrast doesn't look like it's a proper replacement.

If I had decided to go for the PS4 on day 1 or was really looking forward to Driveclub, I would cancel and hold off til later for the console. At this point that was the plan anyway but it's pretty embarrassing to be doing this when the system is so close to launch.

Always unfortunate when the title you're interested in is pushed back, but I don't get how this is going to hurt the launch. I bet most PS4 owners are going to reach for the same multiplatform titles Xbox One owners would be grabbing. Besides, I was under the impression that Shadow Fall was the real Sony marquee title for this launch.

It's not really a gain since whenever the PS+ edition of Drive Club comes out, it'll most likely come out instead of whatever game otherwise would have come that month. Possibly Contrast. :P

After hearing previews talk about it barely hitting 30 fps a lot of the time yet the devs saying they were striving for 60 it was inevitabley gonna be delayed.

I am pretty sure devs dont just pick a date when they can day it stuff happens.

So now I get 2 games for the price of zero games...I'll take a 3 week killzone delay for free octodad..cmon sony, delay it!

Contrast looks pretty cool..contrast and resogun free, heaps of really good f2p stuff and killzone..and then driveclub free* in a few months.

I ain't even mad no more.

One thing that confuses me is the timing of this announcement - surely they would have anticipated a delay a good 6 months back?

Because it isn't! You'll still get the PS+ Driveclub edition when the time comes. Contrast is an extra bonus, not a replacement.

The second half of your post makes your intentions pretty clear anyway.

The news are definitely somewhat dissapointing. I wasn't very fond of the game compared to Motorstorm, but since i was going to receive my racing fix for free i couldn't complain. Now i'll have to wait for reviews of Need For Speed 30FPS Rival, to see if i would use it as a hold on title.

Some of these comments are so weird.

"Man this would definitely be bad news if I liked racing games, was looking forward to Driveclub, and had a PS4 preordered. Virtual preorder cancelled."

People don't pick and choose when to delay a game.

You set a deadline and try to be done by then. Obviously something just came up, or polishing wasn't going as smoothly as they had hoped, and they realized they wouldn't be able to get it done completely in time.

I actually applaud the devs for choosing to delay the game, so that we get a full polished experience in a few months rather than an incomplete buggy mess rushed for launch.

That's a difficult thing to articulate.

It is a game which you can platinum, you can say it's a cut down version of a game, or you can say the disc version has additional stuff. Regardless, it's a game. It's functionally complete.

Not sure about that. All it takes is to say that it doesn't give access to all tracks and cars to be factually correct and informative as to how full of a game this is next to the retail title that has been promoted since its debut.

Not too bothered by the delay if it means a better final game, but it is a significant blow to PS4 launch strength. More concerned about the 'concern trolling' comment originally in the topic title since that's all X1 threads are filled with in dozens of people who claim to dislike/hate/not care about the platform or its games yet fill out hundreds to thousands of posts in them. Is that not concern trolling? Or is that just straight trolling? Can someone explain the difference? Anyway, nice to get a replacement title even if I wasn't really interested in that one compared to DC as a trial version, anyway.

Pure speculation here, but perhaps Sony waiting as long as possible to see if Evolution would be able to complete the game to an acceptable enough status to go gold, and then try and fix any problems through day one patches and the like?

Maybe it was only the past couple of weeks that it became apparent it would be impossible to do such a task, and Sony were worried about possible negative reviews that would cause even worse press than a delay would.

I can imagine delaying an exclusive launch title which is the flagship for PS4's PS Plus offering was no easy decision, and Sony would have liked to avoid it if at all possible.

I agree. The timing is odd. I'm pretty sure they were banking on Evolution's technical skills but that sure back fired.

As said in the previous post a few pages back, there were some news that say Driveclub was very playable but had cut content due to not being ready. I think they made the right decision to delay this.

On GAF, the delay has cause DriveClub from being shit on in every thread to now being an amazing (delayed) AAA title for Sony. What an amazing turnaround, Evolution should have delayed it earlier!

I am dying to know what was wrong with DriveClub to prompt the delay. It had to be bad enough that they just absolutely could not ship as-is, but minor enough that they continued to believe they could fix it until the wire.

I continue to wish we'd get video game industry tell-alls more frequently; the mood at the developer's and Sony must be nuts right now.

If the PS+ version was just called DriveClub, and the disc said "DriveClub with DLC", the two things could be identical, and no one would ever mention it.

It is a semantic distinction, not a content one.
