DS and PSP outlawed on flights

I didn't catch the news programme properly, so I apologise if I get some of this mumbled, but they just announced on a Japanese news programme that DS, PSP and other wireless devices, such as mice, are going to be banned on all flights.

****ing hell.

The worst part is, attendants are probably ignorant enough to make people stop playing GBAs, Game Gears and Lynxes too :(

Thats a big Whisky Tango Foxtrot there.

I think under Homeland Security laws Lynxes are classed as a blunt trauma weapon anyway.

Nooooooooo! I'm flying to Japan on Monday :( My 12+ hour flight from Sweden will be hella boring now.

This is a ****ing travesty of epic proportions. I fly quite a bit, and I`ve beaten a LOT of my DS collection while on a plane (I even beat a game while on the can in a plane going over the Atlantic Ocean!)

This is some bullshit!

I guess I`ll just have to keep my ipod fully charged for flights from now on.

Lol. The Lynx wouldnt last from the time of take off to first drinks on a set of AA's. :lol

I guess you could take some hand luggage filled with batteries.

Security 'Any reason why you have approximately 100 AA betteries in your bag sir?'

WTF?

Although retarded, the DS at least has an excuse to ban it, as there is no way to disable wifi. But the PSP has a switch.

They still let you use mobile phones in 'flight' mode, so why not PSP with the wifi off? I don't usually play games on mine but its vital for movies etc to pass the time.

Conspiracy to make me buy an archos? But I'd buy the 604 wifi so I'd guess that'd be banned too

*looks at thread*

*looks at mass of flight bookings over the next 12 weeks*

BALLS!

Seriously this is a joke right?

Didn't Nintendo team up with some airline to let people borrow Nintendo DS on flights not long ago? Heck, some flights even have on board wireless internet (802.11b). Nintendo DS and PSP use the same technology for wireless multiplayer.

it was a broadcast tv programme that you overheard, right? i'm hoping the japanese media as reliable as u.s. media...any link for the news? i'm a bit worried but i want to see a news story (and if it's relevant to the u.s.) before i completely freak out.

Southwest Airlines has rewarded 50 of its most loyal frequent fliers with a Nintendo DS and a copy of the cerebrally challenging Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day.

Teaming up with the Japanese entertainment company, the low-cost carrier has chosen to say thank you to members of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program with gifts designed to help wile away their hours in the sky.

these two stories seem pretty weird when you set them side-by-side.

OH **** ME. I live in Japan and PSP is the only f*cking way I survive on those goddamn 12 hour flights.

Replace that with DS, and you have me. :(

The GF was telling me about this story when she saw it on the news and said it was still under debate and nothing had been finalized yet. Not sure on the details though, so if an article pops up I'd also appreciate a link.

iirc Nintendo gave the airlines wifi-free DSs.

i guess that would make sense. with the psp, can't you turn on/off the wireless? would that make any difference, or would the latent signals still be there to (possibly) cause the problems airlines are worried about?

They tell you to turn the Wifi OFF. There is a switch on the PSP but not the DS.

If they banned PSP/DS they would have to ban all laptops too, and I'm sure business travelers would be REAL happy to hear that horseshit.

Does this apply to, what are those things called, xenus, zimas, that microsoft wifi mp3 player?

This is really strange. In the US, the FCC is moving towards allowing cellphones to be used in flight, so I wonder what prompted this sudden step back.

I've used the internet on Wifi on transatlantic flights with a satellite connection, so it better be harmless...

This is probably erroneous reporting.
Wifi has been deemed harmless on planes for years now.
In the US you are supposed to turn off the Wifi; it helps save laptop battery life anyways.

Heh, this would be crazy if it happened. How would I pass time on those 13+ hour flights to Asia then? The entertainment is boring on the plane :P

I don't get it, if WiFi is some kind of problem, why are so many airplanes wireless internet enabled? They actually encourage you to use WiFi in the plane.

Time for a firmware upgrade to let you turn off the Wi-Fi on the DS . . . Buhahahaaaa :lol Nintendo release a firmware upgrade? Too funny.

Of course, this could be a stunt to try and raise the sales of Game Boy Micros.

oh my gosh! By prohibiting this travelling becomes more and more boring. I just don't want to watch any of these stupid movies during the flight. In addition, it's really ridiculous -.-.

It's bullshit. On average a transatlantic flight will have over a dozen cell phones that are accidentally left on. They can cope with wireless things and they have for years.

This is probably more security. Not that something like that would really stop a determined and intelligent person, but I like to think that the kind of person who'd hurt a lot of people like that is rather... unintelligent.

One of the few reasons I'd ever consider buying a portable gaming device...gone.
This is going to hurt the industry really, if it passes.
Why the hell would I want a portable gaming device if I could only play it at home.

there are other modes of transportation that don't involve airplanes...
