Sales of DS in Japan plunged in February as Nintendo cleared the decks of DS-old-style to make room for limited supplies of DS-Lite.

Nintendo sold only 119,300 units last month, in comparison to 730,000 in January. For the first time since March 2005, Sony's PSP outsold DS, albeit by only 300 units.

The change-over affected hardware sales overall for the month, with a year-on-year fall of 35.44%, or $57mln. In February PS2 sold 96,500 units followed by GBASP with 24,900 units.

Software sales also fell 3% (around 23.1 billions yens) compared to February of the previous year. Monster Hunter 2 (Capcom) comes in first place of sales with 460,000 copies, followed by Sengokumuso 2 (Koei) with 300,000 copies and Motto Otona no DS Training (Nintendo) with 250,000 copies.

I'm impressed. Given the shortages and coming upgrade, the PSP's margin of victory is (from Nintendo's perspective) impressively small.

The title scared me to death! I thought this thread was about the PSP finally overtaking the installed base of the DS in the US.

I don't know what I'd do if I didn't know that there are more DS's out there than PSPs.

Oh my God, this stupid thread will start only a new war between Sony and Nintendo's fans.

It is OBVIOUS that the PSP is head to head to the DS if Nintendo cannot produce DS enough, but it remain ONLY a supply problem.

It is the same thing for the 360 in USA: don't say that is a semi-failure: because the only problem is the Hardware's production.

The PSP is a success, but the DS is an incredible success, something amazing, overall in Japan and Europe.

That's all I have to say.

Everyone was getting all excited about 400k-600k launch week sales...so 400k a month isn't exactly going to stimulate the hilarious 25 page photoshop threads we saw at the end of 2005.
