DS is 2007's top-selling system in the US

I'm really exicted about the DS.

I got it for Christmas with the Mario Kart bundle back in 2005. I only own 5 games for it. I love em all. The only reason I don't have more is purely monetary. But, I've got a part time job now and am starting to get some more disposable income. For Christmas I'm getting Phantom Hourglass and Pokemon Pearl. Then after that there's about 15 games on my list I'm going to work though. So awesome.

Plenty of 2-D gaming goodness on the inferior PSP FYI
When I say DS is the superior Nintendo system by far, I mean it's superior to that other rather average Nintendo system that's on the market (which has also been successful for some reason, and that's why I'm glad DS has beaten it out for the year). Now, yes, DS is also the best portable system on the market, but PSP itself is also superior to Wii and I certainly have nothing against Sony's system either. :D

My favorite thing about it is that I actually freaking play it - and put as many hours on it as I used to spend on my PS2. I've spent more time on it this year than my Wii and my PS2 combined! No Nintendo product has been this compelling (to me) since the SNES, and only then by default. This is important to recognize, because I haven't gone next-gen yet, and when I do, it will be wearily.

Seriously. Anihawk nailed it, although he skirted around the issue of "old school" by saying "2D." The fact is, I'm playing games that I haven't got to play in years -- a new sidescrolling, platforming Mario (and Yoshi's Island too!), old-school sprite-based RPGs/aRPGS/sRPGS all OVA THA PLACE, the revival of the adventure genre, and not to be excluded, original content coming out of the touchscreen interface.

The importance of the DS --to me-- cannot be overstated. This is a fucking excellent system and it deserves to be recognized.

For Christmas, I'm getting:
LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, CV: Portrait of Ruin, FFXIIRW

PS:
Let us also recognize and pay homage to the gaming gods that provided the industry for recognizing the sweet-spot for gaming is at exactly $29.99, with $34.99 for SE titles. How fucking awesome is this?!
Agree most strongly with all of the bolded. :D
And enjoy Portrait of Ruin, too--you deserve it for your work in the sales threads. I wish I could experience that game for the first time again.

With Phantom Hourglass being one of the best games I've played and adding to so many great games I already have for DS, it's really close to surpassing SNES as my favourite system of all time. I love it! :D

However, I'm still having a heck of a time buying a couple for presents, Nintendo needs to ship more!

Wait he said all four versions of Nintendogs has sold a million each. That means a minimum of 4 million in NA alone. Last I heard 4m in EU too. It should be way more now. And 1.5 in JP.

I guess we'll get an announcement or statement soon.
Nintendogs has already shipped ~16 million, it's likely to top 20 million when all said and done. I think it's a great game and deserves every bit of the success :)

Remember when they first debuted the DS along with the PSP at the same E3 4 years ago and everyone had a good fuckin' laugh at the DS?

Who's laughing now, huh? :(
I'm laughing now, watch, :lol

EDIT -
I agree with what many have already said, any system which successfully reinvigorates 2D gaming, especially 2D Mario, can only be a super awesome thing! :D

I've never seen so many people that I know have a DS that never owned a system beforehand. I can think of 12 people off the top of my head.

You guys realise you are just setting youself up for a fall, They killed it(2D) once, they will kill it again.

And yes the DS is awesome.

Why would Pokemon Diamond outsell Pokemon Pearl? Aren't they basically the same game? (Unless PD sold just slightly more than 2m, while PP sold slightly less than 2m. Or unless PD actually came with a diamond as a bonus.)

Nintendo should've paired Diamond with another valuable gemstone, instead of a piece of sand that's been lined with multiple layers of Oyster "stuff". That wasn't the worst part for me, though. Have you seen the cover art for Pokemon Pearl? I didn't notice it until someone else pointed it out, but once you make the phallic connection, you can't unmake it.

Now, regarding the success of the DS, I was one of the early doomsayers(to myself) of the Nintendo DS. I wanted a next generation Gameboy, with hi-res graphics, not some new Nintendo gimmick. However, as it should be, the system eventually won me over with its games. The newly released DS Lite also helped push me over the edge at the time that I finally decided to jump in.

For consoles/handhelds, single release, one SKU, non-bundled, I think it's SMB3 at ~17.5 million.

Pokémon Red/Blue/Green has sold more, ~31 million, but like Nintendogs they were multiple SKUs, and Tetris for GB (~30 million) and SMB (~40 million) have sold more but they were bundled.

Pokémon Red/Blue/Green has sold more, ~31 million,

I take it that includes the remakes.
The DS has a few years left in it but I can't see it beating the almighty Pokemons, If you combine the Brain Trainings they might be able to though.

No, just the first run of the GB games. Add another 10 million for the remakes, and another 15 million you want to include GB Pokémon Yellow, which was basically the original game with Pikachu as your partner.

And, let's be positive about 2D gaming, it's going to be around foreveeeeeeeeeeeeer! (hopefully :D)

My heart was broken once, it doesn't dare to dream anymore(anyway 2D won't be back until I get a nSMW)

As for the Pokemon sales (insert swear word of choice)

the PS2 GTAs are at something like 30-35 million combined worldwide, so the four versions of Nintendogs don't have much of a chance of surpassing those three games. It's still amazing that Nintendogs has managed to outsell all versions of pokemon except for the original red/blue/green series.
Uh, there's five wholly different GTAs on PS2. Nintendogs is just one actual game so far.... this comparison *really* doesn't work.

Well to be honest, games appealing to hardcore gamers aren't the reason the DS is a success and the best selling system of 2007. The hardcore games came after the DS became the established frontrunner due to the non-games and casual games (Nintendogs, NSMB, etc.).

Perhaps that's why guys who are now eating crow (like chespace) or idiots in general (Victor Ireland) weren't able to predict the DS's success, since they rely on their own game preferences rather than the market's when analyzing.
