DS Sells 30 million consoles in just over 2 years

By my reckoning, DS has now SOLD over 30 million worldwide in just over 2 years - almost double the PSP sell through. I think you'll all agree that this is an impressive achievement, with around 13m in Japan alone.

With Europe currently selling around 350-500k per week, Japan to be doing similar numbers and same in the US (2m+ for December is expected) then I expect the total to be over 35m by the end of the year and 40m by March!

Well done guys - now to see if Wii can emulate that success...

reckoned, not sold.

Reckoned to have sold, there's no way we'll ever KNOW how many have been sold unfortunately, but we can (and have) made reasoned estimates.

*groan* Please don't tell me we're going down this road again...

By the by, how did you come up with those PSP figures, working with shipment numbers or estimating a sell-through rate on those shipped numbers? Just curious.

The usual combination of data - insiders figures from Europe I get from GFK / Chart Track etc, reports and estimations from Korea and SE Asia, analyist info and estimates, shipment info, CESA, NPD + Canada, Japan (Media Create / Famitsu) etc etc, same with DS. It's the best guess I think we have unless somebody else has more detailed and up to date figures?

16 million PSPs sold? Wow, I never knew the numbers were that huge. But you gotta wonder what people do with them since they obviously doesn't buy games.

How many GBAs were sold in 2 years?

34m by the end of 2003 with just Japan and the US, but two years is actually around March/June and doesn't count the massive-crazy holiday sales.

Wow the DS really is selling like no handheld before.

Okay, so the GBA (+GBA SP) sold about 34m WW by the end of FY 2003 (which is about two years for the system).

The DS is on track to sell about 30m WW by the end of the calendar year 2006. Lower overall, but it's selling at much higher rate than the GBA did at this point in time... especially in Japan, although it's really picking up in the Americas and Europe now.

Don't forget Canadia

And Australia and the rest of Asia and the fact that it's not the end of November any more...

The 30m is as of the first week of December so it's likely to be getting on for 32m by now

Well it's difficult to compare exactly because DS is selling over 1 million units per week at the moment but it certainly seems to be about level with GBA now, and GBA had a much faster start when it launched so it's almost a definite that DS will end up outselling it ...

For all it's worth, I have the DS at 28.3 million worldwide.

US: 7.5 million
Japan: 12.7 million
Europe: 7.15 million

While Wii enjoyed a hugely successful launch, Nintendo DS also had a record-breaking week with 515,000 units sold across Europe last week, which is not only the highest week's sales since the consoleÂ’s launch but also the most any console across all formats has ever sold in a week! NintendoÂ’s handheld phenomenon has taken Europe by storm since its release in March 2005, with over 8.5 million consoles now sold across Europe.

=> Europe: 8.5 million

Well it's more like 32 million by now and over 1 million per WEEK being sold !!

It's amazing how many units the DS has been able to crunch out week after week and really is a testament to Nintendo's amazing foresight as to how a handleheld should be designed.

I am actually surprised by the number of PSPs sold. If the software development was there I could really have seen it taking off and having at least closed the gap a bit more between itself and the DS.

NPD already announced 8.5 million for the US, and Nintendo announced 8.5 million for Europe (via some tracking company, so it's legit - see Eurogamer or something). In the latest Media Create chart the DS passed 13 million in Japan.

So we have

US: 8.5 million
Japan: 13 million
Europe: 8.5 million

= 29 million not even counting Korea, Australia, Canada, South America, South Africa etc...

EDIT:
Also, has someone got an image that can be posted everytime VG charts is brought up as a valid source of stats that says 'VG charts is wrong' or something? The VGC guy just makes numbers up sometimes.

Sales-Age! Sales-Age! Radioactive Sales-Age! It's a thread, with bullshit numbers! Here comes guys with estimate blunders! LOOOOKKK OUUUUT HERE COMES THE SAAALLLEESSS-AAAAAAAGGGGEEEE!

Amazing, especially when everybody thought it would fail.
Anyone that thought the DS would 'fail' is a complete moron.

The fact the PSP has managed to sell as much as it has is pretty amazing...

:lol Where were you about 1.5 years ago?

Can we PLEASE censor ioi's numbers from gaf?

Just add a little snip of code that censors any number (0-9) if the poster's name is ioi.

Oh c'mon guys, stop the bashing (in this thread at least) DS must have surpassed 30m worldwide at this moment, this time ioi is right.

I thought the DS would be a niche machine and PSP would be a niche machine, that GBA would still rule. I was wrong on the first account, right on the second account, and not too far off with the GBA (at least in NA).

So selling almost the same numbers in the same span of time, despite WHOAMGSONY competition and shit-awful sales for 6 months after the launch period, and now sitting at a much higher rate than seen before (in Europe and Japan, with flat rate in America where GBA is still selling strong and PSP is at its strongest) is unremarkable?

Another six months to a year and DS will be overtaking GBA. It is totally stupid to try to spin down the DS' success. The only way to do it is to deliberately ignore the big picture and just stare at simple numbers.

edit: Why does ioi have 3 threads on the first page? I don't care if he doesn't overtly link to his site, we all know what he's doing.

Can we PLEASE censor posts like this from ioi's threads? As requested, ioi keeps his nose mostly out of NPD/Mediacreate threads with his estimations. He should still be allowed to post his own projections, however inaccurate they may be.

Some people actually like this information. It's not like we're using it for anything other than personal interest, so the world shouldn't fall apart if the numbers aren't accurate. This information is fun, and the way ioi acquires it takes more effort than the bitch posts that fill his threads.

Nothing against you, KOAM. I just hate seeing ioi's threads get filled with the same shit.
