Ugh, a few years ago I was merging onto the highway from a ramp, and saw a momma goose and her little ones crossing the road. I slowed way down and was pulling to the side (not much time to react). Asshole in an SUV behind me gunned their engine and sped around me to pass.

Am I the only one who thought the driver that stopped was being incredibly irresponsible and unsafe? Stopping in the middle of a busy highway is not my idea of a good thing. Yes, it would be tragic to hit the duck, but it would be far worse to cause a major accident. One of my friends used to be a tow truck driver and after all the stories I've heard of him digging cars out a ditch because someone didn't want to run over a small animal or piece of debris, I've learned to just say screw it.

Oh, without a doubt. Despite how glad it made me to see them stop, it's far, far safer to keep going. In their defense, however, traffic did look pretty sparse.

My dad, a cop, patrolled roads for 20-something years. He was always amazed by the number of people he saw that were killed or seriously injured because they were trying to avoid small animals. You don't stop on a freeway for a fucking duck. You run over the fucking duck.

And I like ducks.
