Ducktales coming to DVD this fall.

I still find it amazing that Disney milked DuckTales for so long, yet refused to publish the new Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck comics in the USA. New comics are being drawn and written every month by the artist, who lives in Arizona, but they are only sold throughout the rest of the world... not the USA.

(I have this vague feeling that this may have recently changed.)

I'm trying to remember, they never did say who Hewey, Dewey, and Lewey's (however that's spelt) parents were?
And maybe I dreamnt this, but didn't Donald Duck show up at least once in Ducktales?

You mean Don Rosa's comics? They're published in the US; there's just a 18month gap or so. Uncle Scrooge is up to 350ish now - they've been continually published bi-monthly IIRC.

Never really got into this show as for a long time it came on the same time that the Super Mario Super Show came on, and, well...Nintendo(also)owned my childhood.

Btw, how many episodes are in the Ducktales set?

I thought Don Rosa's stuff wasn't being published in the USA during either the late 80's or at some point during the 90's... maybe it was just for a couple years? I knew they were back now, but I was fairly sure there was some bizarre period when they weren't making out in the USA.

Chip & Dale and Ducktales!? AWESOME.

Now how about some 90's Spider-Man, X-Men, and Power Rangers and I'll be in nostalgic bliss.

I hope that Disney does get around to releasing some season sets of Power Rangers since they do own the license now.

Gizmoduck was simply the best. I wished he was in all the episodes.

Buh?

I hope this does well, and they release Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers on DVD too.

Check the OP's link. Chip N Dale is there too. Street date Nov. 8

FUCK YES!!! I'm going to be $60 poorer come November 8th. YES!

Dudes, I am so stoked right now. Holy shit.

I fucking LOVE Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales. I hope that they release the CnDRR movie at some point. Or was the movie the first episode? (It was like an hour long, told how Chip and Dale became detectives, met Monty and Gadget, and involved a bank heist with Jell-o)

Is Treasure of the Lost Lamp on DVD in America yet? I know it just recently came out in Eruope or something...

the hunt for the golden goose part1 and part2 are the best ducktales episodes imo.
Hell yes. Though the five-part series opener, with the Treasure of the Golden Sun, comes awfully close.

On a similar note, anyone remember the Disney Afternoon? Best damn 2-hour cartoon block in the history of cartoons :)
Damn right, and for the record, after-school programming when to complete shit once the Disney Afternoon was disolved.

No, and it angers me!

Speaking of Rescue Rangers:

"Come along
You belong
Feel the fizz of Koo koo Cola
It's the cola for makin' you proud
Take another sip and be one of the crowd
You belong with Koo koo Cola

Come along
You belong
Feel the fizz of Koo koo Cola
Get to the store and take all you can carry
We got the flavors- orange, grape and cherry
Feel the fizz of Koo koo Cola

Come along
You belong
Feel the fizz of Koo koo Cola
It's bottled in Pensacola
Come along with Koo koo Cola
You belong with Koo koo Cola"

Holy Shit, I can't believe I forgot about this song. We need an mp3 of this now.

Damn, all these dvd releases are going to make me go broke. Gotta have all the Ducktales and Rescue Rangers episodes on DVD, and possible one other Disney show that I know I'm missing, probably Darkwing Duck.

Edit: About DuckTales not being DVD worthy. You forget that it was popular enough to get a theatrical movie release.
...not to mention 2 NES games...

There are a few that, if they were to be released, I'd strongly consider buying, if not automatically buy:
-MIGHTY MAX
-Animaniacs
-Freakazoid
-The ORIGINAL MegaMan cartoon

I watched all of these almost religiously, as well as Darkwing Duck. But that's about it.

It's listed on Ultimate Disney's Coming to DVD page. Date is TBA of course but better than nothing at all. They'll likely release it around the time when they start to finish off the TV eps on dvd so late next year or so.

Meh. I liked the show, but it was just too uneven to be worth buying in my book -- most of the segments that didn't feature Yakko, Wakko and Dot or Pinky and the Brain sucked.

Funny, I thought the least funny moments of the Animaniacs were the Animaniacs. :lol Only segments I liked were Pinky and the Brain and the Good Feathers. In my view Tiny Toons own it six ways to Sunday, an opinion that generated some heated discussion in a previous thread.

oh my god so do I!! :lol

I watched that cartoon so much when I was a kid, I still have the words memorized.

*clears throat*

Dashing and daring, courageous and caring

Faithful and friendly with stories to share

All through the forest they sing out in chorus

Marching along as their song fills the air

CHORUS:

Gummi Bears, bouncing here and there and everywhere

High adventure that's beyond compare.

They are the Gummi Bears

Magic and mystery are part of their history

Along with the secret of Gummi Berry Juice

The legend is growing they take part in knowing

They fight for what's right in whatever they do

CHORUS:

Gummi Bears, bouncing here and there and everywhere

High adventure that's beyond compare.

They are the Gummi Bears

Probably the best theme song to a cartoon EVER. God it ushers in such nostalgia.
If you're interested in hearing it for the first time, or again, here: http://jen.fluxcapacitor.net/cse/gummi/GummiBears.wav

And if you want a good laugh, here's the same theme in Polish: http://jen.fluxcapacitor.net/cse/gummi/gummi-polish.wav

good times. Cartoons were golden when I grew up. It's too bad kids today have to watch crap and uninspired ones.

I still own the Chip n' Dales Rescue Rangers video game. I'm tempted to put it on just so I can hear the theme song in MIDI. Tough game.... for me at least.

Hey, I was just watching some Duck Tales and something dawned on me...does anyone remember the show Quack Pack? It took place several years after Duck Tales and starred Donald, Daisy, and teen-aged Huey Dewy and Luie. I only ever saw maybe...five episodes, but I remember it being pretty good. Anyone else ever see it? Wonder if Disney'll ever release THAT on DVD?

I thought I was the only person in the world that liked...almost loved...Quack Pack.

That Tasty Paste episode had me in tears.

Great show, I'd buy that on DVD.

I actually didn't watch the DuckTales cartoon much, but the movie is GOLD

New details!

TV Shows on DVD have discovered via an anonymous source what the contents of the upcoming DVD set of the 1980s cartoon series DuckTales are going to be. It appears that there is to be 27 episodes following in general airdate order as a "Volume 1" release, although the pilot feature Treasure of the Golden Suns is not contained and there are no bonus features yet announced. One of the longest running Disney TV shows, DuckTales tells the Carl Barks inspired adventures of Scrooge McDuck and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie as they have adventures in and around the town of Duckberg, and will arrive on DVD on November 8th.

Dude what the FUCK? How can it be Volume One if they leave out the first five episodes of the series? They'd better be planning on releasing a Duck Tales: Treasure of the Golden Suns movie DVD. They better not pull this shit with the Rescue Rangers DVD (though I know they will, and the hour-long feature that kicked off the series won't be on the release)

FUCK! Disney always manages to fuck something up, don't they?

Was that time they were in the Mountains, with the Aztec gold, and Launchpad had that barely flying beak thingy, in the Movie? I remember that barely, not much else. I do have to say, though I can't remember too much of Ducktales, I remember that I liked it.

What about the Peter Pan cartoon that was on Fox, with Tim Curry as Capt'n Hook?

The story of Uncle Scrooge comics, Don Rosa, Barks, etc in the US...

Uncle Scrooge Comics (and all disney comics for that matter) were being published by Gladstone publishing until they lost the license in the US about 5 years ago. Thsi comapny was run by Bruce Hamilton who just recently passed away (in June). He also ran Another Rainbow, a company who made AMZING Scrooge collectables. In fact, I have a signed Carl Barks lithograph from them hanging over my desk as I type this.

About a year and a half ago Gemstone got the rights to publish in the US, and started releasing Scrooge, Donald, and Disney Comics and Stories again. Rosa's works are featured in these books, but they try to pace them out so you usually only see one once every few months. They just released a compliation volume of all of Don Rosa's Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck that is annotated by Rosa himself for only $16.99. It can be found on amazon.com and cannot be reccomended enough if you like this stuff... IMHO it is one of the best comics ever published.

Anyways... If you are curious as to what the lithographs look like, here is a good link:
http://www.jlcomicart.de/Lithographien.htm The site is in German but easy to understand.

I have this one... (signed by Barks of course)

Holy shit. I just went to my local comic store and checked this out...it is really, really awesome. I had no idea that Scrooge has such a deep backstory. I only looked at the first few pages, but I'm totaly going to be buying this (and a second copy for my dad) within the next few days. Thanks for pointing it out!

I wish Disney would use their character IPs like this more often. I would fucking KILL for a Mickey, Donald, and Goofy movie in the vein of the Clock Cleaners or Ghost Hunters shorts. FUCKING EISNER CANCELING "The Search For Mickey Mouse" FUCKING BASTARD!

My dad bought the Carl Barks Library for himself when I was about 5. It's at least 30 volumes, hard-backed, black and white. I grew up reading 'em, and they are timeless beyond compare.

As if that wasn't enough, Don Rosa started drawing Scrooge stories when I was 7 or so, and that guy is THE KING. Absolutely tremendous artist and storyteller; "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" is a must-read even if you've never read any of the Duck stories before.

By the way, DuckTales totally jumped the shark when they started gaying it up with the non-Barks characters (Gizmoduck, Bubba, etc etc). Launchpad was okay, though, because he basically took the place of Donald, whose speech impedement would have crippled the show IMHO (in the comics, Donald speaks "normally" and quite eloquently).

edit: My coworker swears DuckTales the Movie is available here in Japan on DVD (he claims it came out this month).

Alot of the crappy characters they came up with for Ducktales were from the Italian comics... In the italian scrooge comics, he didn't earn his money the hard way as described in Barks's comics, but was born with money and aquired more through luck and magic... Needless to say, the italian comics do not have the same impact the Barks and Rosa comics have.

I wish everyone would pick up the Life and Time of Scrooge McDuck graphic novel though. It really deserves to be read by more people since it is just brilliant.

Couldn't agree more. Bubba Duck was just a bad, bad idea. Gizmoduck was okay, but at that point the whole show was just goofy and lost all of its sense of grand adventure.

I was hoping Darkwing Duck would re-capture this, but it too was a horrible comedy.

Is this what you're talking about?

I'm extremely intrigued. I would definitely pick that up.

In fact, the way you're all talking, I'm definitely going to have to check out this Ducktales discs too. All I really remember is the later episodes when it got crazy with Gizmoduck.

That's the one. An absolute must-read, even if you've never read a Duck story before. I think it won a ton of awards...

Do kids still read Duck comics? :/

WTF!? Actually, I'd read a few of the Scrooge stories by Vicar/Scarpa in the Gladstone and Gemstone books, but always walked away unimpressed. It's not that the art was bad or anything, but it was obvious that the translation/localization was poor; it just didn't read like a proper Duck story. :(

It actaully won an Eisner in 1995 for best serialized story...

If Disney has ever made a perfect decision, it has been to treat their IPs with care when it comes to comic books. When Gladstone shut down in the late 90's, Disney did not (IIRC) actively shop around the license to other companies and try to get someone to bite. They waited for someone to approach them, which in 2003 Genstone finally did.

Disney is also pretty hands off when it comes to the comics. The only real rules set forth in the comics license basically limits what characters can appear and that's about it. Otherwise it is entirely up to the creators. And the current creators (Rosa, Van Horn's, and the insane number of Italian and Dutch creators) really take pride in their work. And it's no wonder why. In Finland, Donald Duck typically sells through about 1 million copies a week. Other Disney books are right there with it. Across the pond these creators are superstars, so it only makes sense that they take pride in creating quality stories.

anywho, enough about that. Gemstone is doing a great job of bringing stories over here. Here's to hoping that they continue to do so for a long time to come.
