DUE PROCESS: Indie MP shooter inspired by Rainbow Six and SWAT

Recently, a group of friends by the name of Giant Enemy Crab felt the urge to participate in the 7-day FPS Jam. Undeterred by the fact that the last one ended two months ago, they put their heads together and made their own prototype game , which they describe thusly.

Due Process is a very alpha love letter to “classic” tactical shooters of yore, like SWAT and the Rainbow Six series. It’s a strictly multiplayer game that focuses on cooperation, tactics, and planning. Players have 2 minutes at the start of a round to draw up a plan John Madden-style, involving tools like flash bang grenades, night vision goggles, and wall breaching charges to coordinate the perfect assault, while defenders scheme to foil their plans. These strategies collide in a bloody gunfight that ends in the blink of an eye.

There is a gameplay video available here.

Before you complain about the way the game looks or sounds, remember that it was made by five people in seven days, so expect those things to improve as they get farther along in development. If you're interested, I recommend checking out their website and sending them an email to apply for the alpha.

Ooh, this sounds awesome. Exactly the kind of shooter I crave, really.

I actually think the block people are charming, for a gamejam thing.

Yes yes yes yes yes. A proper multiplayer planning stage? All day long.

The burns from Takedown are still healing but that trailer is incredibly encouraging.

At first glance I thought someone from India had shot some members of parliament and was blaming Rainbow Six and SWAT as his reasons for doing so.

I'm interested in concept art for this game. The posted on their blog that they've shared some art pictures but I can't find them anywhere.

Does anybody know where to find them?

2 of my favorite series as inspiration? I'll take it.

Just don't pull a Takedown: Red Sabre on me.

Seems like they're in a pretty good spot already with a proper planning mode, overhead view with "whiteboard" functionality, and actual wall breaching. It should also help that they'll probably be focusing on mechanics over presentation.

As long as the inspiration is SWAT and not just tactical set dressing for a CS clone, I am down. I need SWAT5, whether it be literal, virtual or spiritual.

Oh yeah, screens. Added to this post and the OP.

Again, seven days' work. They say they're aiming for a final look that's visually clear and has lots of bright colors (Citing Hotline Miami and Dredd 2012), so expect it to stay relatively abstract.

That looks really interesting, I actually kind of like the blocky style it has so hopefully it doesn't stray too far away. I love the idea of being able to draw strategies on the map, that is a much needed addition in any strategy style game.

Doing a bump. Hey guys I'm one of the artists/animator on Due Process.

Just wanted to give you all an idea on art style since I want to quell any worries about us being another "minecraft fps lookin' thingy"
The plan as of right now is as follows:

We're gonna take this
with some of this
and sprinkle a little bit this on top
As well as a pixel art style on 3D models, which can look awesome if done well. Here are some examples

Whoa! Awesome that a member of the team is on GAF!

Your plan sounds excellent I really hope you guys wind up becoming the vanguard of the retro-chunky-polygon-and-pixellated-texture revolution. It's long overdue.

Awesome. I was wondering what the final goal for the art was. Game looks fun.

Sounds like it would look really cool.

PC Gamer played it

Didn't know it had dynamic destruction of walls like Rainbow Six Siege. So excited.

They mention that they might do a KS in a few months, but might not do EA bec they want a good jumpstart to the MP install base rather than fall off. Maybe 8-9 months until something playable to others.

Name is kind of gross. The militarization of police is moving further and further away from ensuring all people receive due process. The description at least didn't seem like they were actually commenting on the situation?

Pretty sure it's supposed to take place in an abstract or comic book-ish setting. The title is a shout-out to the SWAT and Rainbow Six series and/or a reference to the *process* of the planning phase.

What I'm saying is that the setting is probably disconnected enough from reality that a police vs. criminals premise won't have any more troubling implications than red team vs. blue.

Then you're still life with due process = "bloody gunfight that ends in the blink of an eye"

I'm not saying that there should be a twitter campaign to change the name or shoehorn in some kind of "message" I'm just saying that name plus this kind of game makes me personally a little :/

I guess it could also be interpreted as satirical, like they're being snarky about how police games are bloody shooters while still paying homage to that style of gameplay. Sort of like Hot Fuzz, where they're taking apart the "police action hero" and also showing that it still makes an entertaining movie.

Either way, it's nowhere near as tasteless as BF Hard line.

Have you drawn ire to Battlefield Hardline which seems to get right into all that glamorised militarised police and drug war business? This seems like quite a harmless looking game with a reference as a name.

Meh. It's inspired by Judge Dredd and other dystopias. And considering how bloody it will be Due Process is hilarious name.

Is takedown that bad?

No planning phase, fairly glitchy in general, single player/co-op is an absolute joke, multiplayer is unreliable and clunky... There are some glimmers of a good game in there, but overall, yeah, it's a wreck. There's a reason they cut the price to $5.
