Duh-Age: Don't Mess With Texas BILL NYE

Bunch of Texans get in a kerfuffle cause Bill Nye said the moon reflected the sun's light.

::queues NOFX's The Idiots are Taking Over::

As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.

But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune.

Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.

But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."

The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.

At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they'd always suspected.

Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill Nye, the science guy!

You made my second grade classroom more entertaining and now, 12 years later, you're still entertaining me.

I live in Texas. That being said, here (Austin) is the only worth place to go/visit/live in Texas as far as I'm concerned. Waco is pretty f-ing awful.

I love the "bu bu bu it's not meant to be taken literally!" defenses.

Why is anybody supposed to respect a religion if the religious can't even justify their religious book?

Because we realize God didn't write the Bible. He told humans what to write in it. While God is perfect, humans are not, thus giving some imperfections to the Bible

Yes, conveniently those imperfections tend to be the passages that are inconvenient to the current social and political landscape. Lucky us.

It is all going according to keikaku

While I do believe in creationism, I'm to the point in that I can't consider myself of any one branch of faith. People like this (in the quoted article) show how people willingly limit themselves by wearing the veil of their faith.

You have to remember, the current King James Bible was written by poets and writers under the instruction of King James. They put to paper what they wanted us to see & understand and perhaps not what was actual scripture. Also, since we humans are the greedy and selfish things that we are, who knows what was intentionally left out because it didn't mesh with the beliefs of the people of the time, let alone what was reworded to work in the favor of those around them at the time. The same can be said of all beliefs as well, not just Christianity.

no doubt.

Of course lots of writings that were supposed to be in the Bible were left out. heck since I'm protestant I read the NIV and even it has fewer books than the KJV. Shit gets deleted all the time. I just wish we found those "lost" writings that were supposed to be in the Bible. I forgot the name of the guy who wrote most of the New Testemant, but according to my humanities teacher he had written a lot of other stuff that didn't make the cut to be in the Bible. No the dude's name wasn't Paul.

I just want to point out that Waco is more backwards than the rest of the state. Which is saying someone because most of this state is pretty backwards.

I live in Austin, we are not crazy (other than Alex Jones and his minions).

Waco however is stuck in the 1950s. Literally. In the 50s it was the 3rd largest, fastest growing city in the state, poised to become what Dallas is today. Then an F5 tornado hit and destroyed the town. It stopped growing and is now stuck in the 50s. It is almost as creepy as west texas.. which is saying something

The KJ bible and the NIV bible have the same books, just different translations.

The bible was canonized over a 1000 years ago by the catholic church as far as what books are in and which are not.

The largest books that were removed were written by Gnostics which is considered sacrilege by most Christians.

That said, yes.. even if you were to believe in god (I dont), the bible is a VERY human document. What we read today was handpicked by the vatican

edit: also the NIV is not any more "protestant" than the King James Bible. They both find their roots in the protestant movement. The NIV is favored by the religious right.

this is the quote that gets me. these people knew what they were getting into, and they still got mad :lol

P.S. - Bill Nye is one gully motherfucker.

On the subject of Bill Nye: Awesome. :lol

On the subject of the Bible: perfectchaos007 is fine, he seems to be one of the few people that understands that the Bible is merely an anthology of works written on a similar subject by people who lived in multiple time periods. Why should a Christian living today be forced to accept EVERY book in there as literal truth? Because a council of Catholics said so a thousand years ago? Please. I see nothing in Genesis and Exodus that suggests they're anything more than Hebrew myth, and I treat them as such. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's simply idiotic to say that because I don't believe in them, I don't believe in books like the Gospels and therefore am not Christian.

Protestant Bibles removed some of the Catholic Bible's books. I think this is what perfectchaos was referring to.

Maybe.. I thought he might have been talking about Thomas since the 7 (I think thats right) books that the catholics removed aren't "lost".

but who knows, there is a shitload of biblical apocrypha floating out there.

For anyone interested in just how crazy some of the "churches" get out in Texas, I suggest this book. Taibbi went undercover and joined Hagee's megachurch as an Evangelical. Truly strange folks, full of hatred it seems.

I honestly can't tell if you're laughing at people like perfectchaos and me, who understand that the Bible isn't one cohesive narrative, or the people described in the OP, or both.

I certainly hope it's just at the people in the OP... I like to think most people on GAF are intelligent enough to understand what the Bible is.

Yeah, I don't know exactly what he was referring to, but figured I'd throw out this possibility.

I'd never talk shit on fellow Gaffers unless they deserve it ;)

I need to read this simply because his piece on Palin was mind-blowingly awesome, and right on target.

"God said, let there be light, and there was light"

The sun didn't just appear out of thin air. Science has already proven this. Also, Earth could not have existed without its star already being there (ie Sun).

yeah I was talking about both actually. The first removal of writings happened a couple thousand years ago while the next deletion happened around the protestand reformation. for some reason I thought the KJV still had those books protestants took out lol. I only read NIV so...

edit: and yes I know those books of thomas aren't lost. I was talking about the books/writings that never made the cut 2000 years ago by the people who wrote the Bible

Wait a minute, didn't this happen like two years ago? Bill should probably think about cutting out that one line so as to stop this nonsense from happening.
