Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition Out Today on PS3, Vita

Still some of the best level design in an fps just from a purely 'pragmatic' standpoint. What I mean is that many of the levels actually seem like functional, livable places rather than the abstract videogamey levels of Doom or Quake (both of which I think are better shooters than Duke 3D, but inferior in this area)

For example, the third level Death Row has an execution chair with a control room and a room where people sit on chairs to watch the execution, a chapel, a security room with cameras, a kitchen where they cook final last meals for prisoners, and various cells built in a symmetrical fashion. Outside the prison, there are security turrets and a large gate.

It sounds mundane but it just adds so much to the game when you are going through the red light district, sushi bar, subway, movie studio, bank, etc levels when you see these details and it all comes together. The obvious exception is Episode 2 which is based in space. That has those abstract levels, but they are good in their own way.

Do any of you U.S. Vitacats know what size the game is? Need to clear some space for the king's arrival in EU land tomorrow.

Is it 60fps on Vita?

Almost all the time, yes.

Will this have all the multiplayer features as well?

Sure. Deathmatch and Coop. Online.

Do any of you U.S. Vitacats know what size the game is?

491 MB for the EU version (with localizations)

My Vita is ready.

I suppose gyro aiming is too much to ask for with this release? I frickin LOVE gyro aim assist

No gyro aiming, but vertical assist like in the original Doom, so you don't have to be "that" precise.

Does the game have cross-save?
I would like to switch between playing on PS3, then go to bed and continue on Vita...

Can't wait to play this when I get home. If they somehow released Blood on the Vita, I'd never play anything else besides those two ever again.

I want this, will read a few more user impressions about how the controls feel before snapping it up.

I'm reading talk of gyro aiming... :) hope it's like KZ:M on Vita.

Great observations and I agree all around.
Since Duke 3D was released, there has been regular snubbing of the space levels but I too think they are excellent in their own way. I think most people prefer the earth settings more (myself included) but the space ones were a great change of pace.
All of the episodes really thread together pretty well for a story in an old school shooter.

There is no such thing. But you can have something like an aiming assist, so you only bother on aiming horizontally. I made a video some weeks ago but it's in french so you might not be interested. :)

Vita is perfect for this. That's good news about the vertical aim assist. I'll probably play it that way just to be able to turn my brain off a bit and enjoy the ride.

I second those pining for a Doom port. That would be so great. I wish Gio Corsi's team could put it on their list, but they're probably aiming for splashier releases than something like Doom. Still, you have to think there's a small studio out there willing to do such a port if Bethesda wanted to make it happen.

Honestly now that I think about it ... I think a PS4/Vita port of Doom might go over better than some might think. We now have 18+ million PS4s in homes and Doom is a seminal game that cannot be THAT hard to port. It's like putting the Beatles catalog on a modern streaming service.... Everybody loves the classics.

Those who have downloaded it, how does it control? Those Build Engine games weren't known for having stellar mouse support

Seriously, people need to buy this based on principle alone

Still hoping this sends message to id Software for a DooM port :)

I know Carmack mentioned at some point he wanted to, but business got in the way. ...
Outside the complete collection already on PSN and the classics on BFG?

So uh.... the PS3 version is in need of a bit of work, I think? Besides the fact that it doesn't have proper SDTV support (you get black bars at the top and bottom on a game that came out in 1996), there appears to be a really big issue with the HUD....

.... yeah, the HUD text isn't centered properly.

Um... I guess it controls good at least? >_>

The controls feel great on Vita, it is native resolution. Online looks to be well done using a good lobby system. There's a lot of content and it's a classic!

The one surprise is that it allows you to rewind after death, like a racing game. Very odd inclusion, and will take some of the challenge out for sure. But I guess it takes the place of quicksave.

For someone making a point that the game came out in 1993, why are you using a TV from 1993?

I don't like the Vita analog for FPS games, but here it works really well since the aiming system is quite rigid. Really enjoyable.

I'd kill for Doom / Heretic / Blood / Marathon on Vita, with online multiplayer.

I dont think devs optimize for SDTVs anymore

That TV is actually fairly recent, and very large at that. Component hookups even... It's not normally what I play the PS3 on, just merely what it was hooked up to at the time.

Seems like an odd oversight, given the original game was meant for a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Also this game has the same problem Doom 1 on the XBLA had, in that you can only switch weapons by using a left/right toggle it seems.

Im really surprised no one has tried doing gyro aiming on PS4 as a complimentary control like in Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Battlefield 4 had looking around in cockpit with the gyro controls so the hooks are definitely there to implement gyro aiming in games.

I believe Blue Estate is an on-rails shooter using the gyro controls.

Duke is live on the webstore.

Game runs like a gem. Love having this on a portable- and the fact it can do multiplayer with PS3 versions is the icing on the cake.

PS+ delivers.

Multiplayer with the PS3 version is awesome.

I would have watched it if you posted a link :) Just want to see how difficult it is to aim accurately. Having a look at another video atm but impressions help of course.

I like the sound of vertical aim assist, how are people finding it? Not too clunky right? Keeps the pace up? Or is it not too bad even without?

It's up, $9.99 but it says 1.2 gb

If you search for it on the Vita says that it is 447MB

It looks that it isn't cross-buy

I mean, the PS3 & Vita versions both come as PS+ freebies today. Together. What you're seeing is both downloads put into one purchase (~450 megs for Vita, 750 megs for PS3). Buy one, get both.

There have also been numerous mentions of it being "cross buy."

It's cross buy.

Awesome, I want to play it on PS3 and PS Vita. I was glad to get the BFG re-release of DOOM III on PS3 as it also contained an optimized and higher resolution DOOM and DOOM II port. I did get the DOOM remastered edition on iPhone, but it is not nearly as fun with touchscreen controls as it used to be with my good ol' keyboard or how it plays now on even a DS3.

Bring both this and DOOM on PS4 too please!!!!

Hope this gets a PS4 version too. I believe the guys behind these two versions said that they couldn't see a reason not to port it to PS4, so I'll keep hoping.

They made some pretty blunt hints that they'd be making one, right? They seem to have a history of making PS3/Vita/PS4 ports (good ones, too).
