Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition Out Today on PS3, Vita

Have fun with this port, I've had access to it for about two month now and its great

Its based off the XBLA port, and then brought in line with Megaton Edition, rather than being a port of the Steam Megaton Edition which is why the rewind and leaderboard clips etc are in

Still some of the best level design in an fps just from a purely 'pragmatic' standpoint. What I mean is that many of the levels actually seem like functional, livable places rather than the abstract videogamey levels of Doom or Quake (both of which I think are better shooters than Duke 3D, but inferior in this area)

For example, the third level Death Row has an execution chair with a control room and a room where people sit on chairs to watch the execution, a chapel, a security room with cameras, a kitchen where they cook final last meals for prisoners, and various cells built in a symmetrical fashion. Outside the prison, there are security turrets and a large gate.

It sounds mundane but it just adds so much to the game when you are going through the red light district, sushi bar, subway, movie studio, bank, etc levels when you see these details and it all comes together. The obvious exception is Episode 2 which is based in space. That has those abstract levels, but they are good in their own way.

It doesn't sound mundane at all. This is one of the reason why Duke Nukem is so popular. That and all the interactive stuff you could do.

Yes, I want the BFG collection (DOOM 3, DOOM, and DOOM II) on PS Vita and PS4 too :D!

I doubt we'd ever see them, Bethesda hold the rights and haven't really shown interest in Vita Development

On the other hand, Shadow Warrior is a possibility for a Vita Port (1997 version), Devolver have the rights, and did the Classic Redux version recently on Steam

id be down for that, i always try to tweet bethesda about putting Doom on vita, so far crickets...

It feels like a very well rounded package, the leaderboards and speedrun-incentives are neat.

I had some issues with the rewind feature corrupting though, but nothing major. It looks really good on the Vita screen.

wait....

the rewind feature is in this???

EDIT: it is!!! Holy shit!!!

I tried playing this on PC using a controller.

Duke 3D Megaton Edition is really hard to play with a controller.

Did they do any balancing for the console SKU?

heres the big question...

does this support ADHOC play? i got friends who will have a blast if we can play some Deathmatch games while we wait in line for summer movies

Am I the only one having problems with the aim on the Vita version?

Tried increasing and lowering the sensitivity, but I still feel unconfortable about it. :(

it doest feel a little bit weird, but then again i turned off auto aim, thinking about turning back on....

I can't play FPS with a controller.
I play Duke 3D on Vita just fine.

I have zero problems playing FPS games using a controller.

The problem with the Duke Megaton edition was that the game is balanced to having super precise mouse aiming controls, and using a controller was far too inaccurate.

Thats not true at all. When Duke 3D came out most people were still using keyboard only to play. The game does not require super precise aiming or even looking up and down.

I haven't played it with a controller yet but it should work just fine.

Duke 3D was, yes. But the Megaton Edition added mouse look, which does require more precise aiming.

I dunno about that. I configured Shadow Warrior (classic, part of the 3D realms super bundle) to play it with the DS4, and that game is arguably even faster paced than Duke Nukem 3D. Took a bit to get used to it, but then it felt fine.

I'm confused what you mean, the Megaton Edition is exactly the same as the original duke 3d, the enemy placements etc are the same.

Normally not into FPS games, but I've played this a lot as a kid when it first came out, the memories! I will buy this at some point on nostalgia alone.

Purchased and waiting for download once I get home. Can't wait! Hail to the King, baby!

Also, +1 for a port of Doom 1-3 to Vita. I would LOVE to have the PSOne version of Doom with the awesome soundtrack.

Yeah, the aiming feels "off" to me as well--not sure why. I'm hoping at some point it will just click for me. Duke 3D was one of my favorite games back in the late 90s. It would be fun to play through it again.

Also, looks fantastic on Vita screen!

Why do I get random framedrops or short freezes that last a second or so? On PS3, during first level so far.

I'm getting this as well. Not game breaking I guess, but disappointing.

Otherwise haing a BLAST with this, as I did with the Doom Classics Collection when I picked that up a while ago. Certainly better visuals/audio.

I mean, the PS3 & Vita versions both come as PS+ freebies today. Together. What you're seeing is both downloads put into one purchase (~450 megs for Vita, 750 megs for PS3). Buy one, get both.

There have also been numerous mentions of it being "cross buy."

It's cross buy.

Yeah, I was wrong lol

Played for a little bit of my little time left, and it's awesome!!! Finally !

Can't aim to save my life in the Vita version :lol Wish there was a gyro option. Aside from that and some minor performance hiccups, Vita version felt great from the brief time I spent with it.

I don't think PS3 version likes it if I try to damage the turret in the fourth level. Whole console freezes whenever I try and destroy it. This has happened twice.

"Damn."

Played a bit of the first level of the 'life's a Beach' episode on Vita.

Forgot how confusing 'find the switch/keycard' gameplay can be. Took a bit of time to get used to aiming, but so far it's a fairly solid port, very playable and runs smooth.

Though honestly, if a near 20 year old port didn't run smoothly their would be some major issues going on. Vita is a heck of a lot more powerful then what I played the original on back in the day.

To sony: get your third party relations folks to do more of these classic pc games to Vita ports. We need Quake 1/2, Doom 1/2, ec and so forth. The more the better.

I've noticed that small framedrops occur when you first pick up inventory items (possibly weapons too) and sometimes when entering a new area on a large map. A bit bothersome at first, but I've noticed it less and less as time goes on. I also encountered a bug on the second level where a certain section of level was missing (leaving the black skybox in it's place), and when you walk into it, you get insta-killed as though crushed or dropped from a great height.

The lack of certain settings is bothering me too. Can't play the game classic, no-mouse look style (not that I mind, since I like mouse look). Cant make running a held input rather than a toggle (IE, you can't assign a true "run" button, only an "always run"). Can't use minimal/no HUD. Can't use the useless-but-fun 3rd person camera.

I also feel like it wouldn't have hurt to offer a weapon wheel as an option rather than cycling one by one.

Other than that... DUKE NUKEM 3D!!!

GONNA BEAT IT FOR THE HUNDREDTH TIME!!! And those expansions. Never did beat those.
