Spoilers of the level 1 ending (From wired.com impressions)
As the first level came to its touching denouement, the camera pulled back to reveal that the giant alien fight was really just Duke playing a copy of Duke Nukem Forever. While receiving oral sex. From two women at once.

“What about the game, Duke? Was it good?” asked one.

“Yeah,” Duke replied. “But after 12 fuckin’ years, it had better be.”

:lol

DAY 1.

You know, I was going to post an Anti Broussard tirade, or perhaps a post saying that Gearbox wouldn't be able to finish a game that basically didn't exist, but fuck it, I wont.

DUKE IS FUCKING BACK BABY! HAIL TO THE FUCKING KING! DAY 1, DAY 0, Give me a pre-order link RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

Maybe you can correct me on this then, as I really hope i'm wrong and will be happy for it too.

I thought Gearbox was now 100% owned and controlled by 2K Games like Bioware is now completely owned and controlled by EA.
Gearbox is NOT own by 2K. Gearbox is an independent studio that did Borderlands which 2K published. AFAIK, Gearbox owns the IP to Borderlands but 2K has the publishing rights to at least an upcoming sequel.

The ownership of the Duke IP is unknown. The Duke IP was owned by 3DRealms but they were under contract to produce Duke Nukem Forever for 2K. 3DRealms closed down and never delivered the game so TTWO sued. TTWO & 3DR came to some sort of settlement (only they know the full terms) but apparently part of the settlement was having Gearbox finish up Duke Nukem Forever.

Gearbox was a good choice since TTWO worked with them on Borderlands and many of the Gearbox developers previously worked at 3DRealms.

The ownership of the Duke IP for any future games is unknown . . . but I'd *guess* 3DRealms would own it. (And maybe some publishing rights for TTWO?) Who know?

Where does it say that?
Here it says it:

© 1999-2010 -- All rights reserved. Gearbox Software, LLC. Duke Nukem, the Duke Nukem nuclear symbol, Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox Software and the Gearbox logo are registered trademarks of Gearbox Software, LLC in the U.S. and/or other countries and used here under license. That also says this:
2K Games has the exclusive, long-term publishing rights to the game.
And it is unclear what that means. Does 2K have publishing rights to just DNF? DNF plus a sequel or two? Publishing rights to the Duke for N years?

And how is that even possible unless Gearbox came up with a bunch of money/stock and bought it from 3DR?

Perhaps Gearbox bought the IP and game from 3DR and is finishing up the contract?

It's from the DNF website.

I'd have to speculate, but I imagine what happened was, because of the suit, TT certainly were not going to fund the development, so 3DR had to close, and could not afford to complete the game, completing the game means a considerable influx of cash, so they needed to do whatever it took to get the game completed so it could ship, they can't afford two years of a studio's time, they had no cash, they did however have an almost complete game, the IP of the game and a legal requirement for TT to publish it. So give/sell Gearbox the IP and let them do it, then they can enjoy the cash.

Just a guess though.

Gearbox's previous involvement in the cancelled "Duke Begins" project might also have something to do with it.

Yeah, that sounds like the same guess I have above. Seems reasonable. Of course there are still many missing details but I guess it doesn't matter as long as I GET MY DUKE.

This is all....so wonderful. I'm so happy. ;_;

Now all I need to be truly and perfectly content is the knowledge that this will be released in retail with naught but a simple disc check. No online authentication or steamworks please (unless you buy it on steam).

There are going to be at least a handful of GAFfers who play this who weren't alive or capable of reason when this game was announced.

They may still meet that criteria when they play it...

I didn't see the edit above, Take Two have a long term contract to publish DNF, it says "publishing rights to the game", not the series, or the IP or anything, just 'the game'. No indication they have any claims at a sequel.

However, they did fund some of Duke Begins. I think there is a good chance now DNF is actually going to happen, and will probably sell a couple of million units, another game in the series seems very likely, and Duke Begins would have to be published by TakeTwo, and Gearbox gets along with the publisher it appears, so even if TT have no legal claim over the publishing rights to the sequel, seems likely they'd be the ones who get it anyway.

But as you said, all this means very little, DNF is coming out, holy fuck.

I sure hope that Team Ico's PS3 game won't be coming out in 2011, unless Team Ico adds a monster with three tits in it, complete with the protagonist saying that he'd still hit it. :lol

As a huge Duke 3D fan I really want to be excited about this, but I have not been a fan of any of Gearbox's games. Considering all of the positive reviews and fan love, I found Borderlands to be painfully mediocre and forgettable.

Randy Pitchford always seems like just about the nicest, happiest guy in the industry. He always looks like he's just come out of being covered in tiny little kittens.

Nor am I, but Gearbox didn't make this game. 3D Realms did. GB is just taking the existing assets, putting everything together and filling in the blanks.

Everything we've seen so far is more or less identical to the leaked screens and footage from several months back.

But if it was just that, it would just say 'publishing rights to the game'.

But it actually says "2K Games has the exclusive, long-term publishing rights to the game."

Perhaps it is just a crappy sentence. Actually it is a crappy sentence since it is ambiguous. What do they mean by exclusive and long-term? If it is just the one game then there is no need for the 'long-term'.

I don't think that's funny. The joke is too obvious.

The gameplay is looking good, but the character of Duke doesn't have any appeal any more, at least to me.

If this was 3D Realms finally getting the game out the door, I'd have bought it day one. It's not, so no special occasion as far as I'm concerned. After all this time, having another company finish it is almost like the gaming industry is cheating somehow. It's just ... wrong.

Because publishing rights don't last forever. For example with the EA partners things, EA don't own the IPs they publish, the publishing rights to the game are not limitless, they end and the games can be published by others at a later date.

That statement means Take Two will be the only publisher of DNF for a considerable length of time, maybe forever.

I feel the exact opposite. I would love to see something like MW2's campaign only without all the self seriousness. Duke would be PERFECT for that.

Tell me about it, it´s a total relief from serious tone campaigns.

I love how this game has such an epic name. Duke Nukem Forever. "I'm gonna blow your face off and then make you blow me." Duke is back. As for Gearbox completing the game. They consist of ex-3D Realms staff [the CEO himself worked on Duke Nukem 3D and Duke Nukem 64] along with staff from the later 3D Realms. The code we'll be playing is the same code that 3D Realms worked on for 13 years. The game now just has a decent developer to pull it all together. Impressions [from the football stadium level] indicate Gearbox has had a positive impact on the game.

I don't give a damn that 3D Realms aren't releasing it. It's still their game. It's still Duke Nukem Forever. This game was dead a year ago. Now it's coming out.

I agree that an over-the-top FPS would be cool, but the actual character of Duke is too cliche and known at this point for me. It's like how The Expendables just looked boring, rather than funny.

That's probably why I miss NOLF sooo much. Cate Archer needs to be back dammit!
