Good on ya OP. We as a country waste enough food that would otherwise feed the entire population that is in need either by homelessness or just poverty. It's criminal how much good gets wasted.

There's nothing wrong with salvaging vacuum sealed products that are otherwise perfectly fine. I read a story about a dude that has a job and a home and dumpster dives as a means of spreading the word of how easy it is to eat healthy by dumpster diving from stores that throw away perfectly good food. He's spent something like 6 bucks on food in the last 2 or 3 years or something crazy like that.

Doesn't France have a law that they need to give left over food to charities? That's a good way to deal with this. I wouldn't go grabbing food out of the garbage, no idea why it has been thrown away.

Grandpa used to all the time, one time hw brought back some shit that my dad threw away a couple of hours before, which was funny.

Ive only done it when my sister threw away an envelope ahe got for christmas with 100 bucks in it. Not cool. She didnt even get in to help look.

I used to work at a video game store that would throw away a TON of old games and systems. Customers would come in, try to sell something to us, and not like our price or we wouldn't be able to buy it, so they'd just tell us to throw it away. The owner said we couldn't take that stuff because it would encourage people to pass on more things or give bad prices in hopes of picking the stuff up on the chance the person just wanted it thrown away, so I never got any of the stuff.

There were 360s, tons of Gameboys, games that were lightly scratched, piles of movies. A real shame. Most of the stuff was in pretty bad condition, but still.

Moral of the story, if there's a locally owned game store near you, they might have dope stuff in their trash.

Watch a lot of Gamestop Dumpster Diving video on youtube. They found all kinds of merchandise like game posters and standees then sell them on Ebay.

If you go to a nice neighborhood, they threw all kinds of goods like designer clothes and shoes.

The best I've found was a pair of Technics sl-1200mk2 and a single Technics SP10 mkii along with a whole box of records. They were next to the dumpster that belonged to the Italian restaurant I worked at. It was all in really good shape other than soda being pored all over them. Seemed like a jilted lover trying to get back at their SO or some shit. I cleaned them up then kept them in the back of my car for a week waiting for someone to come back and claim them but nobody ever did.

The best dive I've ever heard was somebody who went in a dumpster of some failed tech company. Dude found like $20k worth of servers just being thrown away.

With Gumtree, the good stuff free stuff is online nowadays. I had a guy give away a great condition 3DS XL about 18 months ago on freecycle. I gave it to my sister for Xmas

When I worked at a grocery store years ago there was a few times the coolers went out in the meat dept. Best thing they could do is put as much as they could in the back freezer and toss the rest. The meat wasn't bad, but by the time someone would arrive to fix the coolers it would completely thaw. Best believe if my shift ended soon enough lol.

Man, it's like a lot of this thread never went to college.

My old roomie and I hung out around a pizza place at the end of a weekend once and as soon as they closed and dumped their pizza boxes in the dumpster we ran in and grabbed 20 pizza boxes. Some were empty but we got something like 10 cheese pizzas, 4 pepperoni and 2 mixed types. Lived off that shit for like a month.

Everything about this is disgusting. Walking next to a smelly dumpster full of cheese, actually taking said dumpster cheese, dumping it in a dirty kitchen, bragging about it online, actually planning to eat this cheese, being happy with this heart attack inviting amount of cheese anyway - jesus christ.

Nothing against people finding perfectly useful tables or chairs or something else at the side of the road of course. But food is a no-go.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the OP did. It isn't like he dove into the trash cans somewhere and pulled out half eaten sandwiches and soups to take home. This is a completely different thing.

I often salvage mushroom crates and other sturdy metal/plastic containers from the streets of London to use as storage in my studio. I usually put them through the dishwasher to be sure they don't come with bedbugs/roach eggs.

I wondered that same thing when I saw that post, but being in the US I thought it may be different over there. My main job as a job coach for those with special needs takes place inside of a large distribution center, and I know the retail chain it services uses things like that, and closeable totes, to deliver items to the stores. They sometimes leave them out back of the stores after they are unloaded and they are owned and to be picked up by the DC trucks. Folks could easily take them but yeah, that would not be good.

Again, what that poster was talking about may be something else entirely.

I mean, I've taken things like furniture from the curb (just got a pretty nice office chair when I was walking home a few weeks ago), but that's about it. I never personally bothered for food.

Since I live in a college town it's actually pretty easy to find furniture in great condition, if you look at the right times in the right places. Lots of students throw everything out when they move out of the city

A friend of mine dives at the local Ultas..

They toss a ton of make up, soaps, etc that they sell for insane amounts. Usually all it takes is some nail polish remover to clean things up.

Then she resells it for a hefty profit (at a much lower cost than Ulta does)

It's probably those asshats that leave random items in random places in supermarkets. Just yesterday I saw 2 frozen pizzas sat on a shelf in the fresh bread Isle, and a raw chicken sat on a shelf next to the children's toys. Really boils my piss seeing that.


The only story I can contribute that is even close to 'dumpster diving' is the time when one of my neighbours was moving house and had a skip out front. I saw a really nice old clock in the skip as I walked by. I gave him a knock and asked if I could have it and he was more than happy.

Most people don't even realize that 100 years ago we didn't even have refrigerators and people still ate food that today people wouldn't touch if it sat on a counter for 2 hours. That cheese is fine yo, enjoy.
