Dungeons and Dragons Online

Anyone starting up DDO today?

Severs go up for people who preordered sometime today. I didn't get much time with the beta (less than 30mins) but seems like a nice break from other MMOs (less WoW and EQ, more PSO).

It's more like an action-RPG (using player-controlled blocking and dodging...pretty solid combat and environment interaction, from what I've played in the open beta. I'll be playing it this weekend on the head start, as well. I like the more PSO-style setup and the fact that it's quest-driven rather than just about grinding mobs and repeatedly running instances or major quest areas, like virtually all MMOs are, IME.

Sounds pretty different than the mainstream MMORPG (which is definitely a good thing). I'll wait a while and see how people react to this game.

entire game is instanced and yet you pay for it monthly.

What's the later questing like and what did you hate about it? Although I really don't quite understand why the game requires a (pretty hefty? WHAT IS THE SUB PRICE, ANYWAY?) sub, I figured it would be fun to tool around with for at least a month or two...anything to keep me away from the evils and tedium of WoW.

you say that like it is a bad thing. Sounds just like PSO to me :D

Only $15 a month, I am not going to complain...

I played about ten hours of the game and I thought it was pretty fun. I liked that it often felt dangerous and even a little scary (in terms of potential death from traps and monster encounters) in some of the Qs I did and that circumventing combat encounters was often as important as getting in there and choppin' 'em up.

I agree with your cyberpunk comment. Too bad Shadowrun probably won't ever be made into MMO form. But I'll take Shadowrun any way I can get it :)

DDO is crap. The combat strips away the depth and balance of the real D&D rules and replaces it with an extremely generic combat system. The quests and setting are incredibly bland as well. There is absolutely no good reason to play this game, IMO.

I didn't like that the fighting is pretty much half PSO-like action RPG and half Everquest-like turn based.
The thing I hated the most was the totally instanced world. GW has the same thing but no monthly fee.
The treasure chest system while a good idea on paper is a disaster in execution.

Really no reason for me to stop playing WoW for a very long time it seems.

To be fair to DDO, my friend, a wow player like me, had the same complaints that you guys had. After his first few nights, he said "it sucks". But he stuck with it, and now he quit WoW and loves DDO. I dunno, maybe it grows on you (like it did him). I'll wait for vanguard (or even auto assault).

Look for morphix and warnen on Adar. Even have a ventrilo sever set up for voice chat :D

My made a Warforged Barbarian but I did not like him so I got my brother playing a human barbarian for me now. When he gets him back up to 1 rank 3 I'll take over.

Personally, I like the instanced zones. It's a good system, and GW uses it well. Allows you to explore/hunt without hundreds of other people around. I like some of the concepts of DDO, but for $15/month, I'll pass.

When is someone going to make a good MMORPG and undercut the price of those that are out there right now. $15/month seems like a lot to pay to play a game, especially if you have limited time to play.

Ok. I guess the official GAF server is Adar then.

You don't even need vent, the game has built in voice over IP for groups :)

it does? sweet, I guess I'll have to figure out how that works

Here's my Pally with his expensive breasplate on resting in a Tavern:

The beta was okay. Thanks for the heads up though, maybe i'll check it out tonight.

As long as I don't get on FF.

I'm a WHM, they need me.

I played in alpha/beta quite a bit and didn't really care for it. I think that they really should have released this as a 360 title also, it may have done -really- well.

Once it drops in price I may be convinced to give it another shot. Not a big fan of paying $15/mo for what amounts to a bunch of instanced zones and a hub though.

I tried it a bit in the stress test. One thing im tired of is games that ugly running like crap on my computer while WoW looks 10x better and runs perfectly.

So far I've gotten two magic items from loot. A +1 Fort Cloak and a nice +1 Buckler. I also got HALF PLATE for finishing a quest for the second time, and that armor costs 700+ gp at the shop.

In a balanced group right now doing the Waterworks. Hit level 2, and having the most fun I've had in a MMO since EQ1 beta in 1998.

Hmm, most fun I had was golden UO days and the first months of EQ. This game is tempting.

The Waterworks is a level 1 sewer system (most people do it a level 2 though) that has several quests series and one is required to do to gain access to the Marketplace area of Stormreach. The level design in the Waterworks (with the Kobald Prison and everything) is IMPRESSIVE for a first level dungeon in a MMO.

Morphix made me start over (he didn't like his class for a 2nd time). This time Morphix is a Paladin and I'm a cleric. We even made our own 2 person guild (Oniwaban Group) until we get more serious and join a bigger guild.

:D

I played the beta and hated it. It has promise with the whole P&P style, but it's just extremely buggy and feature-less at the moment, as the early beta it is, even in release.

Also, does it still have the random treasure chests and quest rewards in retail version? Really clever move, that one. Hey, I can pick this 300gp armor and sell it or this 10cp broken club. Hmmm.

Thanks to those random treasure chests and quest rewards I've made almost 100pp so far.

That's another thing great about the game: NO FUCKING GOLD FARMERS.

And if you mean feature-less by "no timesinks", that's what I like about it. There's no timesinks like in other MMOs.

This post on the official forums put it pretty well:
http://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2498

I dont' mean to sound arrogant...........BUT.......

My wife is gonna play the game with me (most likely as a fighter to complement my cleric). My best friends will play in our group, which fills our group to 5.

The same RL friends of mine played WoW, but dissolved when we realized guilds would only accept certain classes, therefore dividing us. How can a multiplayer game discourage friends playing together??! That never made sense to me. Friends should be able to play coop together, don't you think?!

Everything I hate about WoW is gone. Farming/travelling/crafting/reputation. With DDO we can play for an hour or two and still complete multiple quests! Finally a game I feel is designed for my tastes!

Even the end game stuff, which will be released later, requires 12 people instead of the standard 40. That will make it so much easier to find another group to join my own. THE best part is that everyone gets their own loot! No more joining 40 man raids in HOPE for an epic item. EVERYONE gets loot! Wow, what a concept!

Thank you Turbine! Despite the standard MMORPG formula lovers who hate on this game (because there are no timesinks), I really love how you shook up the formula in a good way!

<3 Turbine!

I also love there's already been "WTF you can't be level 60 in this game" complaints from the idiots who know nothing about D&D.

Rather few dungeons (playing them over and over - yay!).

Very barebones emote system (hardly anything I tried worked).

Very few races to choose from (doesn't D&D have like a million elven races?).

Logistics become complicated since there isn't any trade channel, or linking items, or sending items.

No tradeskills, or really anything to do except group up and quest.

Very strict requirements on how to build a group, which can be good or bad depending on your preferences.

No soloing, basically, for the above reason.

Really horrible user-friendliness for anyone new to D&D and/or online RPGs (D&D isn't an MMO). Can anyone please tell me how I avoid making my character completely gimped at start without having to read the core rules of the original game? And I think this is the major problem with it. It's made 100% for D&D vets, who, admittedly, are quite a big target demographics.

I guess the no soloing may be a problem if not for the fact as you pointed out there is nothing else to do but group and quest. Group up!

I never played D&D before and I did not have any trouble. My brother and I just played a few combinations till we fount a pair that could group and do well. It is not all that complicated, commonsense if you have ever played a RPG before.

At least the communication's not quite as awful as Guild Wars.

Such a missed opportunity, but I guess it can only get better with time. Or go bust.

I don't like the in game voice chat, lags a few seconds while the ventrilo server does not (not to mention it works during loading screen and any other time the game is not running) :D

Game keeps getting better. Did all four parts of the Waterworks tonight, got a AWESOME full suit of gold plate, and level 3 after all of it. Fear Immunity FTW!
