Dutch Company Planning Mars Colony by 2023

So how long until space colonization becomes something like the 1500s and New World colonization?

At least they are setting their sights on something.

Are they? Maybe they just cheat money from dumb people and run away. Mars colony isn't realistic by 2023 at least not from private corporation, my guess is that there will be delays after delays and grumby investors.

I don't know. Roanoke maybe?

edit: I guess my point is that it seems rather short-sighted to send only one colony and certainly too expensive to send more than one concurrently in the foreseeable future.

I wonder why they aren't aiming a little closer to home.

I am interested in joining in well after they've established their colony.
It will be really interesting to see what second-generation martians will look like, seeing as they'll gestate and grow up in a lower gravity.

Maybe they'll end up shaped as stereotypical green men?

There probably won't be any children born on this colony. All the colonists will absolutely have to be sterilized to avoid explosive population growth, which would strain the colony's resources.

It's just too expensive to transport several lifetime supplies of condoms/pills so snip-snip is the only way.

Is that the ship they are taking?

It's time all those movies came true.

Would be pretty awesome. No rat race. No money worries. No employment worries.

I, for one, am Happy if the dutches are the first (and only?) to colonize other planets, it it happens

they are the ambassadors of social equality, they are easy going, nice and aren't scared of Marihuana and can't wait to see how they name the land after their people.

"You come from the Northern part of the Beatrix continent, right? No, I come from one of the southern Van Gogh provinces actually?" lol

I'm expendable so I'm willing to go on the first shuttle if they need a guinea pig. Hopefully NASA gets fully revived someday to help me get to Mars too.

Just don't make me bust out a mining hammer and destroy your whole operation if you go corrupt on me. I really don't feel like dodging falling structures that were horribly constructed.

I'll just leave this here

Would love to believe this...
But this is just not feasible in so many ways;
- And why go to Mars when we have issues reaching the Moon again.
- Why go for colonization of a planet you've never been too? Maybe a "visit" first?

There's just so many risks involved and the one that always get's underestimated: The people you send on this suicide mission. Living in such proximity of the same people for the rest of your life is not something that's going to stimulate a productive environment. What to do when someone decides he doesn't want to participate in the daily work/activities any more? What happens when the communication get's cut permanently?? We've all read/seen these sci-fi stories and we all know how these things end :)

And "training" in the desert? It's nice and all; you can simulate some parts of the mission but how about the biggest fucking issue here; YOU WILL NEVER COME BACK TO EARTH. Try simulating that "thought" in a desert..

This has "space mission goes wrong" written all over it. If it was actually real..
One of the guys on the "team" is a tv-producer who came up with that "Donor-show"... remember how that ended???
This could be the biggest troll-event ever: Having televised the selection and training of the "astronauts/candidates" and then getting the message: FOOLED YA!
Not even thinking about if this is even possible with today's tech...

So just; NO...

Again: Aim for colonizing the Moon first..

The moon is pretty much just a rock, not many resources to expand your base with.

If you colonise the planet you don't need a return trip. You would need to bring the fuel for your return trip on the way up, and thats a big problem. If we build a Mars base we could drill for water on Mars to make rocket fuel with.

Yeah I understand those reasons, but I think the "human" part of the mission is something that gets forgotten in the light of the technical possibilities and the "dream" of colonizing Mars.
This whole endeavor has such an amazingly huge impact on the mental state of the candidates/astronauts. That's why we IMO first need to do a proper moonbase and see how this "permanently" living somewhere "else" goes... I mean, the moon is a a lot closer when the "shit" hits the fan...

If they bring some Heineken, there will finally be water on Mars.

[edit] Also this now belongs here

America and Australia were like that once. People went to live on the other side of the Earth with no intention of ever going back. Yes people also got exiled there, given the choice of death by hanging or being exiled to Australia, and many chose death. It's not for everyone, but I'm sure they'll be able to find enough people for a small community.

That's also true, but I find the Australia/America comparison a bit crooked;
- You were not confined to a enclosed space with other people for the rest of your life (unless you were a prisoner and sent to a jail (but mostly the punishment was the actual transport to the "new world")
- There were possibilities to get back from Australia/America, one way or another.
- You were not the only 4 people on the entire planet/continent :-)

I do see what you are saying but I still view this as a whole new ballgame :-)

And we shall dub it NEW AMSTERDAM.

And then proceed to trade it to the English for an asteroid.

This has awesome and yet terrible written all over it.

Last time we founded a nation outside our own the british came and destroyed our well founded city and trade, giving birth to USA....soooo now we're gonna create USM?

But hey fuck it I'll come along, need a biologist?
