Dutch woman arrested in Qatar after making rape claim

I don't understand why someone would go vacation to a shithole country like Qatar.

She should have the full weight of the embassy behind her so I hope she doesn't get in any legal trouble there and can safely return home to her loved ones.
The embassy is giving some help, but apparently not that much. Her family got the story out to the press now so our Dutch politicians are forced to at least speak up about it.

These kind of cases are too sensitive to jump to conclusions and take sides without details.

Did they conduct drug tests (if viable)? Crime lab results? Basically any details on the investigation efforts?

If they dismissed her case without going through the proper motions, what is their reasoning behind it?

LOL @ thinking Qatar's justice system is remotely balanced at all

where in the article does it say that she's being held on a false claim? she's being held for adultery and possibly for drinking alcohol. i guess you can victim blame a bit more though.

Should The Netherlands use force to extract her from the country? Would it be worth the inevitable political and/or economic issues?

None of that excuses why rape victims should be arrested for making the claim,

There'd probably be no need, even if she ends up convicted they usually let the women go home after some negotiations.
The UAE let a doctor from my country flee home even though they were trying him to the extent of the death penalty as well as a woman raped there. I've been there a couple times myself and it's an ugly country and utterly loathsome.

The 2022 World Cup hosts, everybody. FIFA is the best!
Was just about to mention this too. Is alcohol even legal there? The World Cup will be such a culture shock to them and the visitors when it happens. The fact that they used cheap/slave labour with horrendous conditions, resulting in the deaths of hundreds just to build their stadiums is bad enough. Now you have shit like this too. Fuck them and their oil money.

no cameras in these rich ass hotels?
Doesnt matter.

Its not really considered that way. Did she have sex with someone, consentual or not? Yes? Adultery.

Best case scenario they deport her.

Dont even know why Westerners bother going to some of these backward countries. Yeh some nice things to see and do, but you're puttinf yourself at risk of their ridiculiusly backward theologic justice system and bringing money in to continue the cycle.

Apparently Laura got her trip to Qatar payed for by a friend who went there to earn some extra cash by playing escort.

Also, all of sudden her family has asked for a media blackout.

And the Dutch ambassador already visited Laura within days of her arrest.

There's probably something more to the story then we're being told.

Where can we read this?

So messed up.

I honestly don't understand why any Western woman would want to visit countries with that kind of attitude towards rape victims.

It's not just their attitude towards rape victims, it's their attitude towards women.

I always wonder why do people voluntarily travel to the Middle East. Nothing interesting to see except for some really tall buildings, fake islands and tasteless architecture and the culture and the traditions there range mostly from unacceptable to barbaric.

Arab architecture is pretty great tbh

She was arrested for adultery. The fact that this is possible is all I need to take sides in this case, nothing sensitive about it.

Apart from visiting, giving 30 Euros a month and providing contact information of a lawyer ambassador will not so anything to help you if you're arrested abroad. The embassy is explicitly forbidden from interfering in the judicial process of the host country no matter hopw stupidly backward their laws are. They can work behind the scenes but you'll never see the kind of stuff hotheads are demanding like the Qatari ambassador being expelled or the PM openly calling for Qatar to release her. That will only make Qatar get more reluctant to help as they don't want to appear weak in their principle in the face of criticism by foreign unbelievers.

I must say the travel advice on the foreign ministry website could be more helpful then jst saying 'laws and customs are different, make sure you learn about them' and more like 'be careful of gender apartheid, as a women you have very few rights'.

The request for a media blackout is pretty much hopeless in a Streisand effect way. Going to the media has backfired badly in this case as Qatar does not give a fuck about the publicity and a lot of dirt has come up about Laura and her friend.

What an ignorant comment.

Yes I also don't believe that spiking your drink makes you willingly go with strangers, people don't have Bond serums, at most you pass out, and I think the dude dragging an unconscious girl out of the party and hotel would at least raise some alarms.

None of it excuses getting jailed for reporting being raped of course.

Oh yeah, if she's an escort clearly she's sketchy and wasn't really raped.

She's been found guilty of adultery and must leave the country asap.

The man was also found guilty of adultery and will receive 100 lashes for the sex and 40 lashes for alcohol consumption.

This. Don't ever go to countries where there are laws that can't be considered human.
I won't even go there as a man. Fuck the laws in those countries. I'm absolutely certain that there are good people living there. But those laws are downright criminal. How can a human being think it's okay to sentence a woman to jail or death, after she has been raped? That is not a humane country.

Wow, good to read that she didn't get any jail time or stones in her face.
140 lashes: not sure what to think of that. 140 firm lashes is probably unbearable.

As a muslim this is baffling, first you allow alcahol into your country then punish who drinks it? Either you follow your relgion completely or stop acting like you do.

And did they forget the story of the follower who came to the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him trying to confess that he was guilty of adultery? Everytime he tried to confess the prophet would stop him and say to him to ask God to forgive him, but that did not stop him, and for the fourth time when he said what he had done the prophet tried to find an execuse for him and that he doesn't mean adultery.

This shows that you shouldn't prerpare the stones and the whip everytime you see something. Yet these countries take relgion from thier point of view.

The story smells fishy and I think the guy might be a shiek and the lashing is just a story so the woman doesn't take legal action againts him.

The elite classes in these Kingdoms have their own set of rules.

They indulge in all sorts of vices, yet have the audacity to punish the masses for doing the same.

what an awful country

Basically all foreign nationals should stay away from their country is what they are saying. You will probably never get a fair trial and will always be guilty. Pretty absurd.

According to Dutch news Laura is being deported from Qatar. The guy will get 140 lashes.

This is because the news finally became public. He would have never been punished for destroying the life of a young girl. The government over there literally got away with it.

This was some terrible frightening shit, thankfully the outcome is far more positive than I imagined. Still, the girl was raped and will have a great deal to cope with I'd reckon, but at least she can do so at home and not in some prison in a rather hostile/corrupt country.

With so many amazing countries to visit, I am dumbfounded as to why people would choose to go on a holiday to a shithole like Qatar. Especially if they are women. Is it naivety?

They allow alcohol to be consumed only if you have the amount of money required to buy a permit.
No permit = punishment

The guy is probably guilty and a horrible person.

But still, whip lashes... what a great country.
Yeah that'll definitely solve the country's institutional misogyny. And teach the guy the error of his ways.

"Ouch! Now that I think about it, feminists make some pretty good points."
