Complete list

Mainstream films:

B000683VI4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

(I saw this on an airplane last year. It's directed by Nick Cassavetes, it has Gena Rowlands in a lead role, and it's the exact opposite of a John Cassavetes movie).

It's a good week for Scorsese releases. The most important disc is:

B00062IVKS.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

FINALLY, we get a decent edition of Raging Bull. Three commentary tracks, one of which is the Scorsese/Schoonmaker track from the Criterion laser disc, another with several other members of the crew, and a third with Paul Schrader and Jake LaMotta.

Raging Bull is also available in a box that collects what I think is everything Scorsese directed that's owned by MGM:

B00062IVL2.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

The Last Waltz and Boxcar Bertha appear to be the same editions that are already out--they just have new boxes. The only other thing in the MGM set besides the Raging Bull SE that's new to DVD is New York, New York:

B00062IVKI.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

This is the 160+ minute director's cut. (Sort of an odd movie--it's a musical with songs by Kander and Ebb, and it has beautiful sets, but if you regularly watch musicals then there are little things that will drive you up the wall about it, like the way that the visuals of the musicians often don't match the sounds that are supposed to be coming from their instruments. And Robert DeNiro and Liza Minnelli make a rather odd couple. And it seems much longer than it should be, and the plot's pretty thin and repetitive. Still, if you're an absolute diehard Scorsese fan, then this release means you can now assemble a complete DVD set of his feature films.)

If you want an instant classic movie collection, this is a great deal (though it's not listed at DVD Verdict for some reason). For $140 at Amazon, the Best Picture Oscar Collection:

Amadeus (Two-Disc Special Edition)
An American in Paris
Around the World in 80 Days (1956) (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Ben-Hur
The Broadway Melody of 1929
Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Chariots of Fire (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Driving Miss Daisy
Gigi
Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector's Edition)
Grand Hotel
The Great Ziegfeld
The Life of Emile Zola
Mrs. Miniver
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
My Fair Lady (Two-Disc Special Edition)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Unforgiven (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Number of discs: 28

There are several releases that are timed to coincide with Black History Month:

B0006J28L4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

FINALLY, we get a decent edition of Malcolm X, with two documentaries and a Spike Lee commentary track. There are also several PBS documentaries, including:

B0006Z2L6K.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

DVD boxart mistake of the week (and what the hell is this movie, anyway?):

B0006H31N0.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Television:

B00005JLEY.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

FINALLY, we get Miami Vice Season 1. All of the '80s music has been licensed, and it's remixed in 5.1. Assembling this release must have been a labor of love.

Also: Deadwood S1, Fresh Prince of Bel Air S1, Highlander S6, 7th Heaven S2, Murder One S1, Murphy Brown S1, Punky Brewster S2.

Lastly, fans of small-budget, story-driven science fiction films should not miss this:

B0006Z2NMW.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Read Elvis Mitchell's NYT review here.

I think I'm picking up the Scorcese collection, though I might just opt to get the Raging Bull SE. Also probably picking up Fresh Prince of Bel Air S1 since the price is pretty decent at CC.

I never thought I'd actually see someone say this.
I think my head is going to explode

"The Life," I believe, was originally titled "Whore." From all accounts, it was a softcore porno with not much of either of the cover actresses in it. :p

I had never heard of this, but it sounds absolutely incredible. I'll be renting this posthaste.

Meanwhile, I've been overwhelmed by nostalgia:

I used to watch this show religiously. I'm pretty sure I shouldn't go buy it, but the urge is there nonetheless.

Robot Stories was enjoyable, but not something I'd really watch again.

Not really anything I'd like to own here, maybe a dew rentals though.

They just keep pumping these out. From what I gather they sell pretty damned well, and well enough for WB to rerelease the earlier new movies in keepsake packages rather than their old snappers.

But seriously, the first new Scooby movie that came out in the late 90s, Zombie Island, was rather good, so I've been curious about these later ones.

Zombie Island was really damn good, but the ones past it just didn't have the same charm. Good, but not "buy it" good. :p

It's amazing, better than the original.

the first 2 were good then they get worse with each new one that comes out...animation wise anyway.

i rented sharktale acouple of days ago, and it was not as bad as i thought it would be

funny, I thought it was just as bad, if not worse than I expected. No continuity in environments/ocean, horribly stupid pop culture jokes minus a few funny ones(you had me at hello), Not one impressive visual throughout, and an extremely bad story to go along which of course was expected.

Oh, and btw, seen School of Rock this weekend also. Now that movie rocks! I can't beleive I hadn't seen it until now

Zombie Island was quite average compared to these. These have nearly all original voice actors and take abit more care in not turning characters into something they not(at least Vampire and Mexico)At this point does not matter much what they do, they'll never recapure first run with its dusty, creepy feel unless they actually used late 60s animation techiques and score.

A lot of Best Buys have had it on the shelves for a while now though. I've had the box since last Tuesday. :D

I will get the new Case Closed volume (Broken Dreams) along with probably the Malcolm X special edition.

B0006H325C.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Picked it up Friday night at Best Buy for $18.99. The metal tin doesn't interest me one bit, plus I don't really want to buy three of them to hold the entire series.

As much as I respect and enjoy Scorsese, I have no desire to ever watch any of those film ever again, so no purchase for me.

I'll probably be seeking out a copy of the older Raging Bull release, as I don't entirely care for the look of the new transfer (they've removed all the original grain) and as I'll likely be sporting a standard TV for years to come, the non-anamorphic transfer doesn't bother me. I have yet to really go through the extras on 95% of my DVDs, too, so the second disc would go unused. The packaging whore in me lusts after the swank digipack, though...

Strangely, that Rotten Tomatoes link contains a review of the Ken Russell film of the same name. :p
What? I specifically went to the page with the correct film and copied the URL. Not sure what happened there... now the site won't load for me at all.

Anyway, the movie got trashed by the few reviews there.

Sorry, what I meant to say is that within the links to reviews of the film directed by Maria Lidon there is one link that reviews another movie.

The link you posted was right, but one of the links AT that link is wrong.

Are there any reviews of this disc out yet? This is bad news, if true.
