Dwarf Fortress - New Version Coming Very Soon

http://www.dwarffortress.com/ is up & running. I got a simple drupal install up. I'd appreciate it if you guys would take a few seconds to sign up. Having some members will lead to more members, but it can be hard to get the ball rolling.

Thanks in advance for helping out, though.

Shiiiit, I'm trying to build a damn Craftdwarf's workshop but by now it's just been sitting there for an hour, no one builds it, I don't understand what the hell is going on.

edit: in fact, nothing is being built any more... gah

edit2: actually it was, just not the stupid Craftdwarf crap. this is really driving me insane

It should tell you specifically why it's not being built, if you uh... brb...

Use q to look at your room. If it's not being built, it should say "construction inactive" along with a reason. Usually a skill (find a dwarf and assign that skill to them) or item (build it if you can, otherwise you're out of luck for now) that is lacking.

Also, sometimes someone will be en route to build it, but have to stop due to animal attack or some other reason. He'll suspend construction. So if after highlighting it, it says "construction suspended" rather than "inactive", you need to hit "s" to unsuspend it.

it just says:

Craftdwarf's Workshop

Waiting for construction.

Needs no special ProfessionW (maybe it's cut off here, I dunno)

Construction inactive.

And that's it... I'm getting annoyed here

edit: Finally got it to be built

I'm playing a round right now and my starting location was PERFECT in every way (complete with cave river), but... there's NO WOOD. Literally. Not one tree on the whole map.

It's turning out to be a hell of a challenge, ha. Since beds are (I think) the only crucial item that can only be made out of wood, that's what I've been spending my wood on so far. I have like 22 dwarves and I think 14 beds. Not TOO awful. I'm hoping when I get the ability to adjust the sliders I can slide wood requests all the way up and the supply will stop being a problem.

I've TRIED to get an underground tree (tower cap) farm going, but I don't know how :( The wiki says if you muddy ground in a fortress but don't farm it or anything, some tower-caps should just spontaneously grow, but that hasn't been the case yet.

I believe Barrels as well, which are required for storing food, and for brewing alcohol. So keep an eye on your barrel level, or you might have a rough time feeding your populace once you get some more migrants. I'm also pretty sure Bins can only be constructed out of wood, and while they aren't a NECESSITY, they are pretty important for efficiency of storing, and I can't imagine lugging goods to the trade depot without them.

As far as barrels go, trade for food and alcohol, and I want to say you'll get free barrels out of it. Bins, I don't think that will be so easy.

Also:

If you haven't already, don't forget to take the wagon apart, three free logs there!

Somewhat off topic, but I've been having a certain amount of fun playing one of their other games - Liberal Crime Squad. The complexity of Dwarf Fortress has been enough to keep me from playing it on this laptop, but LCS is a lot more simple, and still a lot of strategic fun. Plus you get to fight the man, and stick it to those corporate fat cats and big media.

Or get arrested on trumped up prostitution charges. :(

I decided to give up on that no-wood challenge, actually. You can make bins out of metal, so it's actually JUST beds that require wood. And each caravan usually had 4 or so pieces, so it was a good (but fair) challenge.

I gave up because there was no magma, either. If there were magma, I could use metal instead of wood to make all my shit. But without wood OR magma, it was just too tough.

Well, in my personal-non-succession game, I've had a bit of an "incident"

The Dragon, name here has arrived!

Ohhhhhhhhhhh Shiiiiii-

Well, the Dragon proceeded to just hang out on the eastern edge of the map for a long time, so I decided that it was bugged, or stuck, and it'd basically ignore it, checking in on it every once in awhile.

"So-and-so the CarpenJack cancels Fell Tree: Interrupted by Dragon"

Ohhhhhhhhh Shiiiiiiii-

I center on him, and the thick forest above my fortress is UNRECOGNIZABLE. Ash everywhere. No trees within like a screen and a half of the entrance. I immediately tell my dwarves they have to get inside, and draft my meager army and move them to just past the traps of my base's entrance (maybe the Dragon will get caught in a cage!!). Unfortunately, the Dragon is between my dwarves (like 8 of them!) and the entrance. He kills a bunch of their cats, and one of my fisherdwarves.

He's chasing them all over the map, breathing fire in huge spurts that instantly ashifies any trees it touches. He breathes, and I watch in horror as the flame washes over my Rancher and one other Dwarf. A quick look at their wounds, and both are unconscious with like half their body red. He moves nearer and lets loose another blast of flame....

and the game crashes.

I'm actually happy that it crashed almost, as I'm pretty sure that was going to spell the end of my fortress.

Except that I have it set to autosave seasonally, and when I load up the file, the Dragon is sitting there on the edge of the map. I've left all my dwarves inside for now, and the Dragon has sat over there for the entire season of spring (potentially he was why the Elves never made it to my fort). I can't wait to see where this goes tonight.

Shift production to Bowyer's shops. After that make a bunch of crossbows. After that have 2 craftsdwarves making arrows, maybe 1-2 more dwarves making beer & food, and draft EVERYONE else into your military, and make them marksdwarves.

Put them all off-duty, and build an archery range. Their marksdwarf skill actually increases quick(ish) when they train at the range (which they do when they're off-duty) - you'll need bows, bolts, and quivers. After 2 or so seasons you should have a giant army of moderately-skilled marksdwarves, and should come out on top.

If not, well, Losing is Fun! :D

Well, I took the Dragon out.

I was still outfitting my army for the fight when a wave of immigrants arrived. As they walked to the fortess, he came over to attack them, so I drafted everyone to attack him, figuring that now that he was "active" he wouldn't stop with the immigrants.

The entire my-side of the river on the surface is now charred ash. Which I guess will mean less chopping to get trees out of my road's path, but still.

I lost 1 war dog, like 6 cats (nice distractions in the early part of the battle), and what I thought was only 5ish Dwarves. Unfortunately, Dwarves have been dying of their injuries for awhile, so the grand total of losses will end up being between 15-20 dwarves I think.

Not bad, since the immigrants had put me up to 65ish. The losses will put me back at a place where I have enough beds for everyone, and give me a chance to prepare for the next wave of dwarves.

So, I started a new fortress today, and boy, things didn't go well. Just as I'm doing early digging and stockpiling, a black bear shows up. He doesn't attack anyone, but he wanders nearby and scares everyone, interrupting their jobs. Both my dogs attack him and are killed. Then I send my leader/crafter after him, he gets killed too. Finally I switch all my dwarves to hunting and send them after him. He runs away, but not before crippling my farmer, drinking some of my ale, and stealing a bit of food.

The bear drank some ale? :lol

I never updated again, but the total losses from Dragon related injuries ended up closer to 40 dwarves than 20. Lots of fires raged for almost a year afterwards (one is still raging, deep in my fortress, but the passageway has been walled off), and they kept killing dwarves.
