Dear Gamers,

As you probably know, we’re wrapping up the development of Dying Light, our biggest and most ambitious project to date. We spent the last three years making sure that all the features of our game add up to create a truly next-gen experience.

Much of this “next-gen feel” is tightly connected to the technological side of Dying Light. For instance, up to 200,000 objects can be displayed in the game at once. Add to this our use of realistic, physics-based lighting technology and you really start to push the next-gen systems to the limits. Features like these along with our core gameplay pillars – such as the player-empowering Natural Movement, threefold character development system, and vast open world – are all an inherent part of how Dying Light plays. However, combining all of these into one fluid experience is only possible on technologically advanced platforms.

Therefore, after thorough internal testing, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to leave past-gen systems behind and release Dying Light exclusively on the next-gen consoles and PC. Put simply, older consoles just couldn’t run the game and stay true to the core vision of Dying Light at the same time.

To ensure you enjoy Dying Light as much as we would like you to, we chose to release it without any compromises on the three strongest systems available. Thanks to this, you’ll get the full and best experience regardless of the platform you play on.

We hope you understand the hard choice we’ve had to make. With the launch just around the corner, we can’t wait to show you Dying Light in the state it was meant to be. We’re looking forward to your reactions and impressions as we release the game in January 2015.

So, no longer cross Gen. Does this excite you? I'm excited to see more.

TBH I only ever thought it was this gen only, but good news I suppose.
They made the same decision with Hellraid a while back I think.

Wow did not expect that but it's definitely the way to go. Wonder if we will see anymore more cross gen games announced doing this.

Cool! I think it's healthy to get away from last-gen. Fewer platforms to target means hopefully better games with less work.

It seems like such a weird move to pull so late in the development, but good on them.
Come to think of it, between this and Arkham Knight Warner seems to be more willing than the other publishers to dump the old gen.

I hope this will end up paying off.

Make sure you guys preorder or you won't be able to play zombie vs player, no matter how new your console is.

The whole mode is a preorder exclusive:

Maybe it won't be the same deal on consoles because they've realised how fucking dumb that idea was.

Was one of my most wanted games before the new consoles came out, Gutted it got delayed but it's nice to know it's not gonna be held back by last gen hardware.

Still bemused by this and dead island 2 tho gameplay wise, So i'll end up getting both no doubt.

Remember when "new-gen" meant Wii exclusive? Good times.

Anyway, can't fault them for going with current gen.

I feel bad for the programmers breaking their backs bending over backwards trying to get the game to fit into the PS360 footprint.

What a nightmare.

Great news that a developer is able to look past the money aspect of releasing on all consoles and would rather fulfill their vision of the game without compromising it.

Hats off.

Good choice, given how awful the performance in the EGX demo was on Current Gen I'd have to imagine the last gen version was near unplayable.

Its a good looking game, and the way they word the letter it's as if it looks even better now. For some reason the shirts of fallen zombies flapping in the wind was real impressive to me.

Can't wait to see more!

I'm surprised they only realised after "3 years working on it".

200,000 objects

Using my imagination...

Did they say that mode would never be able to be purchased?

They haven't clarified, maybe they'll sell the non co-op multiplayer aspect of the game down the line for like $7.99. Maybe they won't.

For now:
2. Who can play "Be the Zombie" mode?
"Be the Zombie" mode is available to those that pre-order the game before it's launched.

It's like twisting your arm into buying the game before reviews tell you otherwise. Cosmetics are a bonus, this is ridiculous.

Yeah, they'll likely sell it later.
Your post worded like it would never happen.
