E"sports" Fighting Game commentary suggestions.

Best FG commentators are S-kill (probably the best), Ryan Hunter, Persia, Ultrachen duo, Zhi (when in non creeper form), Sajam, Jay Schneider Viscant and Yipes (when at restrained levels). I like D1 and Prog from Smash side too.

Occasionally Mike Ross too.

I think aside from Tasty, you have essentially listed all SF commentators :p

I'm personally more interested in the commentators being entertaining then I am about them being informative.

Let's be real, people unfamiliar with fighting games are not watching tournaments, so you don't need to explain the fundamentals in the middle of the match.

I played fighting games into my mid twenties without knowing the terminology until I went online and browsed various guides.

It is useful to explain for younger players.

So I actually do commentary during our monthly tournaments when we stream. Personally a couple things I keep in mind while commentating.

People are there to be entertained. If I'm not enjoying the match or get distracted it shows. So I try to make even slower matches or one sided matches entertaining.

Knowledge. I know a decent amount and I love to explain the thought process or the deeper tactic. Fighting for neutral, the options someone has with meter.

Hype. Sometimes you get some super tense situations. Even with those moments I try to remember that even though I'm getting nuts, it's still a job I have to do.

Dead air. I try to do my best between matches, or dead air. Nothing can kill a stream by dead air (and not during a regular break). Streamers tune in to watch to be entertained. The same way you would watch sports or any TV, I feel it's up to the commentators to keep the viewership, especially when there aren't any matches on.

Another thing I try to have anything I say contribute and add onto the video. To compliment it, and not take away or distract from it.

And of course, have fun!

Oh I also tend to circle back and every few matches or so to give the details of the tournament etc. People are always popping in and out of streams so I like to give the basics again for people who just tuned in.

Commentary is tough, I give so many props to any fellow commentators. For my favorites, Lord aris. Tasty Steve, yipes, ultra Chen. Tom Brady mk sometimes. Lord sp00ky. Rush hour. Just to name a few.

Seth and Mike showed great chops on ESPN. I was worried they'd sound too much like your normal overexcited esports comment gator but they sounded very professional. I also like to mix it with the likes of yipes. I cannot stand the commentators in most other games/genres.

I think it depends on the event or at very least what part of the event. Top 8 should be very James Chen/ Ultra David like where they give you a lot of info on whats going on. Other than that I like the jargon, boom boom boom, jokey commentary. If commentary was all bland like sports we wouldn't have amazing moments like this

They should follow the real sports model of having a straight knowledgable guy and a colour commentator.

A good FGC example of this would be this years MKXL Top 8 at Evo with UltraDavid and Aris. Perfect mixture of knowledge and entertainment.

I think most of them do a good job that's why they still keep getting work. Ryan Hunter is an all around commentator (mostly GG Xrd these days), not just SFV and Yipes/Persia/Viscant are Marvel commentators primarily.

I also like Dacidbro for Blazblue. And people hate him but I like Magus1234 when he's not ranting about top tiers.

I've been watching a lot of fighting game tournament feeds lately and I don't know if the things that bother me are localized or apply to all game tournies.

The commentators are a hugely mixed bag. I just wanted to offer some feedback.

1) Education is great. By that I mean don't be afraid to say why someone was punished because their attack puts them at a frame disadvantage if blocked. It informs the audience how ballsy/desperate/newby the attack was.

2) Use jargon sparingly. This goes back to number one. If you say something like "frame trap" or "kara into..." follow it up with an explanation or don't use it at all.

3) "Oh...oh... oh... oh" on the beat of the hits of combo is not commentary.

4) Obvious favoritism. You shouldn't root for your buddy when someone had possibly flown halfway across the world to a tournament and already has the locals "against" them.

5) This isn't so much about commentators... I don't think. Keep the damn score. When I'm watching feeds sometimes I get the feeling the commentators are working the score graphics. I'll be watching a first to three and it's match point but the overlays won't reflect it.

How about The Star-Spangled Banner instead?

Yipes is the og GOAT emglish esports commentator
For jp comentators i would say Nuki

Nuki transcends mere "commentary", he is a being of pure hype.

Dacidbro made anime fighter compelling to watch ; telling the backstory of the players and explaining what is going on.

I like Yipes and Persia and James Chen.

3) "Oh...oh... oh... oh" on the beat of the hits of combo is not commentary.
This stuff annoys me so much. That's why I can't stand it anytime Yipes is on the commentary. He's like the widely-mocked annoying radio shows where the hosts press buttons for mindless random sound effects with almost zero intelligent content. I don't need another set of sound effects in addition to the game.

Comments added in Bold:
I think my second point is probably something that can be ignored if the first point is followed. Jargon, I suppose, is necessary.

I stand by saying "oh" during a combo is just gibberish. What lead to the punishment? What makes the combo impressive? It's cool to do exclamations lIke "gooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaal" but usually this isn't said during a finishing combo. It's usually mid round someone pulls off a punishing combo and instead of decent commentating I hear "oh... oh..."

Combofiend and Mike Ross is the best duo, covers all ground excellently. Yipes is the best individual commentator (especially his creativity during the MvC3 era). Aris is the funniest commentator and funniest person involved in the FGC.

EE and TKBreezy are probably my favorite commentator duo in all of the FGC. I love when EE just pulls out random ass analogies from outta nowhere during hype moments. Never fails to crack me up.
