Becuase they'd be cutting their profits in half while trying to support a console, which is something software companies seems to have a hard time with. (look at MS)

Before I use to blow that off but EA can pretty much maintain a console with just there games while killing to competition. And if they add Take 2....scary.

So if this goes through the list of major NA based publishers would be (from largest to smallest):

EA
THQ
Midway
Microsoft Games Studio
Lucasarts
Disney

The two large ones that reside outside NA is of course Sony and Nintendo. Vivendi Universal
and Ubisoft is French and Ubi is owned 1/5th by EA anyway.

Capcom would quickly sell out if someone is willing to fork over the cash, they're probably over-valued right now, given they have a few new "million-seller franchises" much of it due more to good timing rather than the actual merit of the franchises. A Lost Planet/Dead Rising released today wouldn't have garnered anywhere near the kind of attention the two got when they were featured exclusives early in the life of the 360.

EA releasing this info means they are contemplating a hostile takeover, or they are trying to persuade shareholders to force the board to accept.
 
EA will NEVER make a console, there's always more money to be made from software sales, and they have that sh*t locked down.

Some of the reactions in this thread are hilarious, I thought GAF understood the business of the games industry. If this news upsets you, get ready for a lot more of this stuff over the next 5 years. This is just the beginning.

NFL and FIFA exclusive licenses are granted on the basis of no particular console exclusivity. If they released their own console they'd lose the licenses or at least lose the exclusivity of them.
 
I think everyone talking about an EA system is forgetting a very important fact. Namely, they wouldn't have NFL (or any other sport) exclusivity anymore, as all of those deals required EA to make their sports game for all viable platforms.
 
I can't believe this fucking bullshit. The government needs to step in cause EA is getting the fuck out of hand buying up every damn fucking game developer and turning them into shit. The idea of them coming in and raping the Houser brother's baby is beyond enraging.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget the ultimate monopoly they would have on sports games.

man, EA can singlehandedly have a console win or lose if they want just with their support. What I mean is they can give us a standard console just by throwing up exclusive support crazy, even though I guess could have always done it(no support for dreamcast)

The MVP team isn't at EA anymore, however the're the ones who did The Bigs for 2K, but I'm not sure if they're independent or owned by 2K. I think they're independent.

How is EA turning them into shit? Criterion, just to name one company, just released the very-highly rated Burnout Paradise and doesn't seem to be forced to create one Burnout a year.

NHL08 is about 2 billion times better than NHL2K8. Skate >>> Tony Hawk. Madden 08 > All Pro Football.

2K has better basketball and baseball.

Madden > APF? Maybe, but it has more to due with them using the 2K5 engine for the game and it still kicked all sorts of ass.

EA is a corporation that doesn't know shit about games anymore.

TTWO owns Rockstar. You have no clue what you are talking about.

There are some high-level R* execs that have contracts but they can negotiate contracts or go. But the IP and code is all fully owned by TTWO.

That's why I only used one > for Madden > APF, whereas NHL08 is 2 billion times better than NHL2K8 and Skate is >>> Tony Hawk :lol

APF had potential but considering it was their big push against Madden, they had no excuse for using the 2K5 engine.
