EA shutting down Battlefield 2 360, Need For Speed and Tiger Woods servers

Skate too? God, this is such a shitty practice, I really don't understand how EA is allowed to get away with stuff like this.

Why does no one bitch about this shit in suhc a way that people do not buy EA games. Fuck EA.*

* I don't buy their games and shit's unlikely to change

This is the price we pay now, so that we could have Burnout 3 with online play on the original Xbox, back in 2004.
But haven't the only shut down burnout games from last Gen? I just got Burnout Revenge on GoD and the servers are still online, the last dev update was 2006 too.

I know folks love to bash COD and Activision, but as far as I'm concerned, EA is the biggest blight to the industry at the moment. Just dirty, underhanded shit.

Madden 10 as well? Really EA? I wonder how many of these games truly have low numbers of players and how many they are just trying to funnel into newer games. After all if the cancel these 2010 sports titles and people buy '11 versions, they'll make a good bit of money off online pass sales.
(Nail on the head.gif)

Almost all these games have or will have counterparts with online pass requirements. Very sneaky :)

Because of this:

But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles below a point -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where itÂ’s feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games.

The majority of their customers are not affected, so shutting servers down doesn't affect EA in anyway.

They didn't have Online Passes

That's a random aside: Has there been any title which uses online passes yet had the servers shut down? What *exactly* does an Online Pass entitle you to? Particularly in terms of guaranteed duration?

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10? Really? That's not that old and my dad is still playing the shit out of it.
Yep, my dad also.

He'll be disappointed, and knowing him, will greatly influence his decision to buy another Wii EA game.

Halo PC 2003, still fucking going even though only a thousand players play now, the server for the server list is still running after 8 fucking years, and unlike Counter Strike which still has support from Valve, MS ran away from Halo PC like bitches they are left the game in a mess, thankfully they haven't killed the server list server....

For all its flaws and general hatred by BF2 fans, BF2MC on the 360 was the game that pulled me off of only competitive sports games online and got me into spending more than a few hours in FPS games.

Backstab
Bridge Too Far
Black Gold
Special Ops

I would actually like to see some of those old maps redone for BF3 with Frostbite 2.0 destruction

I'm almost positive that Madden 10 had an online pass and that is getting shut down. I'm sure there is something in the fine print that your Online Pass doesn't actually entitle you to anything. Soon you'll be able to buy a new copy of Madden 10 that comes with an Online Pass that allows you to enter a code that does literally nothing.

You should have a mod fix the title because Battlefield 2 is a PC title and completely different from BF2 Modern Combat and the title was completely misleading because of that.

Also, there would be a shit storm if they did that to actual BF2.

Pretty sure they can't (server build being in the hands of millions of people, afterall people still play cs 1.5 on a private WON network after valve pulled the plug on WON and 1.5 when steam was released), otherwise they would have by now.

Anyhow, I'm just here to let out a condescending FEH at walled garden platforms AND matchmaking.
And this is why I don't support EA anymore.

So, BF2: MC PS2 is the last one standing or was that shut down when the OG X-box version happened?

BF2: MC 360 only had about 100 players randomly playing when I picked it up for $5 last year or so. So I'm not really surprised it's being shut down now. What really sucks is that it's the only console BF this gen to have a fucking server browser, meanwhile. >:|

Pardon me but I thought the Battlefield 2 Mordern Combat servers were already shut down for liek, a couple of years already ? I remember I bought that game used for really cheap in 2006 or 2007 and I couldn't get on the servers. I searched the web a bit and it didn't took long before I saw that the servers weren't live anymore.

Looks like I'm mixing games here, but hell, I'm pretty sure it really was BF2MC. For 360 too.

Except, of course, the only reason they have this problem is because they force the EA account on you, forcing you to log in to their servers just to play online. It's not like any of these games have actual dedicated servers anyway

I am pretty sure EA actually uses dedicated servers on Xbox Live.

"EA's long-running arrangement with Microsoft means that Bad Company 2 (like all EA-published games) can use dedicated servers."

I'd love to know officially if this is true.

If you already had an EA.com account, you could login with that AFAIK. Only the PS2 version had issues creating accounts and letting you login. I played the 360 version last year on my account just fine.

The X-box version was the only one that originally shut down before this shut down date due to the XBL shutdown.

Uh, it's true? BF always uses dedicated servers and EA's stipulation for MS back on the OG X-box to get them on Live was that MS allow them to use their own servers and services with a bridge to X-box Live account info to create an EA.com account for that person if they don't have one.

This just seems like a ploy to move more people to their online pass model.

Are any of the games listed ones that require online passes?

Maybe Skate, but most of these are pre-2009 before the EA pass happened.

And yet, BO3:T X-box didn't shut down until the OG X-box Live Shutdown, your point?

BO3:T X-box Live was pretty barren anytime I logged in to play some Road Rage, I'm surprised it didn't shut down before the X-box Live service did.

Burnout Revenge 360 still safe.

Excellent work.
word.

Fun fact: I popped in Perfect Dark Zero (almost 6 years old now!) to see if (a) online would work and if (b) humans were still online.

Sure enough. 2 or 3 rooms with a couple people and a bunch of bots playing. my mind was fucking blown.

Doesn't PDZ use MS's matchmaking servers? It doesn't even have dedicated servers? Apples and Oranges, here.

Here nor there.

Mine was merely a thought on people playing ancient console games online this far past launch, not a commentary on server/support. It amazes me really, that people are still online playing games 6 and 7 years old. Him mentioning Burnout Revenge (early 2006) brought memories back which lead to me mentioning PDZ (I checked it maybe 2 weeks ago, so the thought was somewhat fresh). Especially considering how poorly PDZ aged (and it was poor to begin with).

So tired of this. If I can somehow jump on Earth 2160's servers, a game that averages 0.0 players per month, then why can't a big company like EA keep them up for past a couple of years.

LAN + Hamachi needs to be on consoles.

Couldn't EA just change over to MS's matchmaking servers to allow the few people who still enjoy the games to continue playing the game that they purchased?

This is a perfect example of why it's nice to look not just at the numbers but your customers as well once in a while. You know, the people bringing the money.

The 1% is likely the most loyal fanbase of your game. Not to mention it's a different 1% for each game, so a lot of different people will be affected, and when a person finds out they just can't play a game they own they may not be too happy about doing business with you in the future.

This is bullshit. They need to transition 360 games to MS's servers at the very least. It pisses me off that my PSN Burnout Paradise will just be gutted at EA's whim in the next year or two.

Didn't thousands of people still play BF2:MC?

"Better buy that new shit bitch" "Don't forget the 20 or so map packs"

BF2:MC was so old that EA released free maps for it back when it was new. Yes, EA released free maps.

EA tends to be the only company that really does this. I remember Sega shutting down Chrome Hounds online as well but still its a really shitty practice. Especially when you now wont be able to get those achivements.

A lot of companies do this, you just don't notice on XBL because very few games have dedicated servers in the first place.

I know of at least a couple games I own from Sony that I can't play online anymore, Calling all Cars and F1 CE.

That would require a MAJOR rewrite of the netcode, which isn't simply gonna happen.

It sucks, but server shutdowns of EA games are a fact of life. Most of these games probably have about 50 players playing weekly IF THAT. The more popular IP's like Burnout/Battlefield won't be shutdown for a while.

The truly shitty one is Madden, which is basically a gun to head "BUY 11/12 BITCH!" issue, but I don't play Madden so that doesn't effect me strongly.

Wait so you think what EA does is ok?

Ever took a look on the back of EA's boxes?

"EA Online registration required to access online features. You must be 13+ to register. EA Online terms & conditions and updates found at www.EA.com.

EA may retire online features after 30 days notice posted on www.EA.com.
"

See that last bit? They're legally able to do this. Just like (to compare) Demon's Souls is able to be shut down online at Atlus'/SCEJ/whoever EU owns the servers decision. I don't see the need to throw a temper tantrum about games that have maybe 100 players weekly playing them anymore.

Does it suck? Yes, I'll agree. But I don't need to rage about this given it's EA's policy and their servers. If they are going to shut them down to save maintenance costs, I can't do anything about that.

The alternative is to have games use a proprietary network like Steam/XBL/PSN and use matchmaking/P2P online play. Do you truly want that, Stallion: O Master Race King?

Knew this day would come. :(

I know it's the weakest game in the series and no one cares, but I have some really strong memories of my best friend and I as roommates playing BF2 360.

I can't believe I'm going to miss BridgeTooFar. :(

SMH for Bridge Too Far. It's like the only map anyone on the 360 population played anymore. What good is getting the game if all the community is going to do is play one (IMO shitty) map? >:|

Wouldn't that allow EA to shut the server down before it even potentially goes up?

...What are you talking about?

I meant alternative, cheaper hosting, perhaps moving several games to the same server if they're not already, maybe even hosting by volunteers with the EA system relegated to simple server listing, I don't know. I'm not being paid tens of thousands of dollars to figure this out for them, I just know as a consumer it feels pretty shitty to have a "deadline" for a major aspect of these games.
