EA shutting down Battlefield 2 360, Need For Speed and Tiger Woods servers

Fuck you, EA. I will never be fully done playing Most Wanted.

This, so I understand Most Wanted is a 6 year old game but its one of the games you did right. I also understand the population may be low but where is the mercy and the support shown to the things you do well and you want to highlight as still a viable option. I own the PC version of Most Wanted myself. I said the same things for Need for Speed Underground and Underground 2.

Heh, I ended up buying Skate a year ago off of Gogamer's ebay linkings for very cheap so I'll be sad and or kicking myself that i never took advantage even if no one else is around just one of those missed chances.

NCAA 10 I owned, but not NCAA11

BF2:MC was great and had a lot of great maps, it's far better for conquest than either of the Bad Company games. Such a shame it's being shut down, even though there's less than a hundred people online.

Tiger Woods, Madden and NCAA 10?

All killed? Thats fucking ballsy, lol they arent even letting them get that old anymore before nuking them.

I actually played BF2MC on 360 a couple years ago, it was fun and had some great maps and a CTF game mode that BF2 was missing.

They never fixed the map exploits or engineers being able to crash the server though.

And this is why console online systems and games without dedicated servers can fuck off.

GameRanger, the company which salvaged Grid's online play on the PC, is doing the same with NFS:MW. Infact, they set up their servers in April anticipating this shutdown.

“GameRanger added multiplayer support for Need for Speed: Most Wanted on April 7, in anticipation of these shutdowns. There are about 5,000 multiplayer games of NFS:MW played each day on GameRanger now,” Scott Kevill said.

“There will be a thriving community waiting. This won’t help the console players, but will at least help the PC players given that Need For Speed: Most Wanted is still quite popular (contrary to EA’s generic claim).”

EA has every right to do this.

And consumers have every right to take this behavior into account when pondering the purchase of an EA product.
If you don't like a given company's business practices, don't buy their stuff, you'll find out you can live fine without giving them money.

Dont they still have the bf 1942 demo master server up? or did they blow that away? Because I remember there usually being at least one full game every night or two of players.

Not sure if this is the most recent server shutdowns thread, but I've just decided to play 2010 FIFA World Cup again and discovered that they've shut the servers off, which is ridiculous for a couple of reasons. First the game only came out at the end of April 2010, so it's less than 2 years old.

Secondly it has an online World Cup mode into which most of its achievements are tied, therefore anyone like me who hasn't already earned all the achievements in the mode will never be able to get them.

They don't even have the online World Cup mode in any of the future FIFA games so far, it's unique to the World Cup game, and now there's no way for anyone to play it.

Who's in charge of these decisions at EA?

how much money are they actually saving by doing this?

can't say it affects me so i don't care that much, but it seems pretty lame

Very little. Unless their online backend is made from scratch for each game, most of the basic features like NAT traversal and listing games should be the same for all games and could all be on the same servers. They might have game-specific database with additional user data, which takes storage space, but for most games that shouldn't be too big.

I believe this is more about cutting the replay value of old games so customers move into the newest entry in the series while also devaluating used copies.

They do it so you have to buy the sequel to continue playing. I don't think they really save enough money by shutting down the servers for that to influence their decision, it's all trying to sell the next game in the series by making the old game worthless.

The problem with this strategy is that eventually people will catch on and they'll devalue the new product because consumers will only be buying 2 years of online.

I think publishers should make it clear how long online will be supported for.

A line on the box saying something like "Online Play supported until at least 1/1/14" would give consumers (especially those buying a game after it has already been out a while) a better idea of what they are paying for.

This is probably incredibly dumb, but I always thought Microsoft handled the servers?

EA didn't support Live until Microsoft allowed them to have their own servers. I wish MS had refused to avoid the unnecessary problems it created.

Jesus, what a bunch of idiots. They're not even idiots. They're above that. They are just straight up assholes now.

It's bad that there's no message informing consumers of this, I know it would stop it selling but if anyone ends up buying this for some reason (doubtful), they are left with a shell of a game.

If I recall correctly the SP consisted of a shooting gallery pretty much?

Bottom of the product description:
Some multi-player functionalities may no longer be supported.
Doesn't change a ton when they're bragging about most amazing multiplayer ever a couple of sentences above.
