Early character designs you liked more than the final (pics if possible)

I'm really fond of Delsin's concept art.

That hair.

Uhm, Chris from RE5? Not much different, in the reveal trailer he just had 20kg less of muscle mass and a face that didn't resemble a pitbull.

and old Elena looks way better than the redesign from UC3:

Why? I love her design in Uncharted 3. The ones that I didn't like much were Drake and Chloe from U2 to U3.

Oh, almost forgot this guy:

An early Kanji concept from Persona 4. While I like Kanji's final design (and indeed, he looks to be redesigned from the ground up) this guy oozes cool, and I'd have loved to see him in my party.

Edit: I'm talking about the bottom one.

Basically self-explanatory - discuss some concept designs for characters that you much preferred than whatever they eventually turned out to be.

I for one (and I'm probably gonna take a lot of shit for this one) was really up for the tentative version of Cole in Infamous 2.

I mean sure, he kinda looks generic as hell, but I'd have much preferred something more representative of some character evolution rather than copping out back bald-gritty Cole due to the fan whiplash. Like if they gave this concept more of a chance, I think they could have tweaked it further to a point where strikes a balance that'll satisfy Infamous 1 fans in some way.

It was even more jarring that his new voice and dialogue for the game was clearly meant for this redesign.
Wait that's what Cole was supposed to look like? Wow. Now I want to suckerpunch someone. He looks way better.

Persona has consistently good character design, particularly the fashion and stances, but it's all wasted on children.

I'd definitely go for a Persona game featuring older characters like the design above. The school setting is a real turnoff. >_>

I liked how most of Nier's visual design turned out, but one design that looked far better in the initial Fujisaka drafts was Kainé - in the final game, she works as a character in spite of her outfit, while the original was much less dissonant.

On the other hand, I have no idea what they were trying to do with Emil's sister here.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment might be your thing

Secretly the best game in the series in terms of everything except gameplay

Specifically that one on the right with the scarf. That would have made for a much more unique Nero than the Dante0.5 we got. Hopefully it'll be a costume in DMC4:SE.

I'm partial to the bottom left and right.

There are many awesome designs in that book. Many great Nero designs that ofc didn't make it, and a couple of great designs for Dante as well.
There is a particular one of Dante with short hair that is surprisingly not insulting (if anyone cares to post it cause I'm on mobile now).
Capcom still has top notch artists.

As one of the people that complained about the redesign and was happy they changed him back, it wasn't about the character looking better or worse (I didn't even like original Cole's design in 1 when it first came out), it was about them just completely changing an established character. I hate it when stuff like that happens and would prefer to play as the character as they are, especially in an ongoing story.

The Neptunia artbooks are packed with prototype designs, but from memory the only character I felt looked significantly better initially was Gust. Early designs on left, final on right.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, the team at EAD3 made the right decision. You can still see elements of this design in the final Midna.
:P

Having read Hyrule Historia, I found this to be the case virtually every time. I really enjoyed a whole lot of the character concept art, but every time I can recall -- no matter how interesting I found the art -- I ended up saying, "they made the right choice there." It really shows how much thought EAD puts into these games.

Really fascinating thread, OP. On the Watch_Dogs guy, the change is so subtle that it really interests me. With just a few shifts, he went from character actor to leading man. From what I've heard about the game, they probably should have stuck with the former.

As for the Bayonetta designs, good riddance. You ditch the beehive, the ribbons and the catwalk proportions, you lose most of what made the original design iconic. I'm still amazed that the Bayo 2 redesign works as well as it does.

Dragon Age: Origins

Was a lot younger and originally going to be a more naive about the outside world, having lived in the woods all her life. Even the first interviews with her voice actress talks about how much she loved poor little Morrigan.

Then suddenly the hood was down, the bikini was covered up, she was older, more wise and powerful, fully aware of where she was in the middle of things. She didn't need to be with Flemeth anymore, so it always felt weird that she was living there. There are even dialogue still in the game that reflects the former characterization between her and Flemeth.

She became this:

The latter version makes more sense. Having another "newbie" character would be superfluous, as the player character is already new themselves. Better to have someone who already knows about the world and has their own take on it, than a blank slate that needs to be fed exposition.

I quite liked the original artwork that was released for Perfect Dark Zero:

I felt that this art style really suited an evolution of the tone that made the original game fun. The time and energy wasted making the game more realistic and gritty should have been put into polish and refinement, but instead it just left the game feeling generic and rushed.
The game was badly rushed at the end, IIRC Rare wanted to deliver a big patch after launch but MS said no.

I always liked the top one.

"Hello. I'm Johnny Cash and I'M TAKING YOU PUNKS DOWN"

Personally I like the right one more, it looks more real. It might be the lighting, but the left one looks like an anime doll, the right one looks more like a real person.

To me, the left design looks more akin to classical Nomura stylings, the new one looks adjusted to fit modern anime design.

I don't think either is anything special, but I think the left looks a little more pleasing.

Yo, that's William Levy lol

Yup Still sucks to this day. The player count was amazing and they wanted to double it. Sadly we never got that. The game I feel got a bad rep too. It wasn't bad at all. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Was just a bit on the ugly side.

No fucking comment. His voice and his lines are terrible too.

Easily Mitsuru in Persona 4 Arena

Jesus, I've always disliked Mitsuru's Arena attire, but now I'm doubly upset because those designs are just so spot on for her. It seems like such a natural upgrade from her P3 look I can't imagine why they went with the design they did.
