Early preview of AMD (ATI) drivers - huge perfomance improvements

Anyone with a 5770 try these? I don't think I need them. Mass Effect 2 ran well at max settings.

Crysis 2 too, though I couldn't get widescreen to work.
I have that card and crysis 2 runs fine in widescreen
Just pick your res? And maybe update your drivers?
I have NOT tried the drivers in this thread though, seems like it's mainly for series 6xxx

Yeah, its set to 16:9 in the settings, and still plays with black borders around the game screen. Its the only game I have this issue with. Oh, this is with the demo. Is the full game out? I don't know, I just wanted to see what this new rig could do, not really into shooters.

Damn Catalyst just straight up doesnt work for me. I'm able to download the Driver by itself just fine and I have my 5870 up to date but no matter how many times I reinstall/uninstall etc, Catalyst just wont run. Says it installed fine and it shows up in my start menu but I click it and it never loads (as far as I can tell. It's not just the new one, hasn't worked in a while. :(

Do you actually get benefits from Catalyst or is that just a settings manager of some sort, and the actual improvements come from the graphics driver itself?
You can install only the driver and use RadeonPro.

If you really want the CCC, you're facing the same ancient bug that AMD never fixed: the stupid CCC installer can't properly stop the components that hook into the Windows shell (the right-click "Catalyst" menu), and cannot overwrite their files while they are running. Since these files will have mismatched versions with the rest, it prevents CCC from loading.

To "fix" this, kill explorer.exe before proceeding with the CCC installation. This way the installer will be able to overwrite the offending files.

from what i've gathered, this driver update is aimed more at the 6xxx series, i think.
The 5000 series is basically identical to the 6000s. There wasn't a major architecture change between the two.

My 5850 seems to run a bit faster in BC2 with this driver.

Makes me feel good about choosing the 6970M, this go around.

It's a desktop 6850, for those who don't know.

Honestly, I'm not seeing the gains mentioned in the release notes. I'm thinking those numbers are based on a much earlier Catalyst version.

That said, I did get a 100 point increase in 3DMark 11, which is pretty substantial for just a new driver.

I don't see any difference with the new drivers with my 5850 card. Also I've read from other sites with the same results. The drivers seemed more focused on the 6xxx cards this time around.

Hilarious. With these drivers, I still get drops to 50fps in Hot Pursuit at 720p, let alone 1080p. I've come to the conclusion the game itself is just an unoptimized piece of shit.

Didn't know you could flash the 6950 to the shaders of 6970. Is it worth it if you don't have a good cooling system(my case is not cooled very well)?

I don't see why not. The only thing is less overclocking headroom on the 6950.

Got a nice jump in BC2 Vietnam. 10fps increase at 2560x1600 highest settings/8xAA/16xAF. Getting high 40's lows 50's now.
