Earthbound Beginnings (Mother 1 on Virtual Console) announced, out today

So, er, how did he know?
Because it seems that it was a really well-kept secret...

...and yet someone told

about it.

So someone close enough to Nintnedo to know this is in contact with

Why would that be?

The heads of Starmen.net have supposedly gotten bits of inside info relating to the Mother series before (they knew about the representation it was getting in Brawl for a while). I'm not absolutely convinced that Tomato knew about this beforehand, but there'd be precedent if he did.

I also seem to remember from one of the Mother 3 patch test streams they super casually mentioned talking to Itoi like it was a thing they got to do fairly regularly.

It just occurred to me; this game also has the Hippie theme (aka Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode")

That was a legal obstacle with EarthBound, according to EB Central. Whatever it took to take care of the song for that game had to be done for this.

That's significant, along with Jetpac surviving DK64's VC release. I don't believe that the SuperFX/Argonaut games are truly unreleasable,

Completely ignorant about this but wouldn't mind playing one of the games.. but what's the difference between this one, and the SNES version of Earthbound already on the eShop?

Are they totally different games? And if not, which am I better off experiencing for the first time?

They're similar but different.

I would absolutely recommend you play the SNES game first, it holds up far better.

Terrifying considering how poorly Earthbound actually holds up compared to the other SNES games of its time, imo.

Either way, I bought it. Kind of figured Wii U would see all of the games after the joke in last year's presentation about mother 3.

I honestly thought we'd be seeing some kind of Mother Trilogy compilation collection. But if this is the way Nintendo has decided to release the original Mother, I won't complain. I've already bought Earthbound Beginnings.

(Now I just need to make time to finally play it.)

Disagree with this. The game still has a ton of charm, and the story is light and fun. The only thing that sucks is the slight grind at certain points, but it's such a happy experience that's easily forgiven.

Eh, Earthbound 0 (or now, Beginnings!) is fine, but I don't think it really holds up as well as Earthbound (which doesn't really hold up that well either).

GIVE ME MOTHER 3 ESHOP RELEASE PLZ NINTENDO KTHNX.

Could have connections. He also works for Funimation so it's probably not hard to get ahold of his information, and I remember one time Mato made an open letter to Nintendo that they could use his translations for the localization of the games. Then again, he's also part of Starman.net which has been able to get insider info before.

That's not how things work. Remember that Nintendo is still going to release Directs through out the year, like when we got Majoras Mask. They want everyone to focus on EBB right now. Announcing M3 now on direct basically would tell people to wait for the "good game" lets be honest the first EB hasn't aged well.

I don't really understand how you're arriving at this conclusion.

I was at work when this was announced and had to control myself... I was perfectly content with spending a few bucks on steam and Smash DLC as my monthly entertainment budget... then this happened and I was like... a day eating hotdogs isn't that bad (not actually that broke, just that cheap so I'm not going broke from E3's like this one).

And this is basically the gist of what happened when I got home.

Maybe Nintendo bought the fantranslation on the cheap...

Mato always said (and meant it) that if Nintendo asked him for the translation he would give it to them for free.
I know Clyde a bit (mostly due to my work on my still unfinished German Mother 3 fantranslation) and don't consider him one to backpedal on that statement.

Someone posted this on Twitter, too amazing:

Oh my god, where can I get Famicom styled faceplates for my Wii U Gamepad?!
I NEED THEM!!!
