Earthbound is up on the Virtual Console [Wii U]

Wow...gamers are such self-entitled and righteous people according to this thread... :D

It's £6.99 here in the UK...which is not bad. It was never released here.

I'm not sure you can put a price on certain games especially if they are rare/non-existent in your region.

Bringing up Steam Sales is such a ridiculous thing since no one in the industry can compete with Steam...they are PC gaming...and pubs/devs are at their mercy essentially when it comes to the PC platform.

Haha, no thanks, Nintendo. $10 buys a lot of games on Steam right now.
I have this image in my mind of someone with a huge steam library (bought on sale!) hardly played as they browse Internet forums, while another person sits at their Wii U playing Earthbound.

I assume everyone has seen the official website, but I didn't see it mentioned on the last few pages.

http://earthbound.nintendo.com/

They actually posted the full PDF of the original players guide. I don't have a Wii U and I don't even care to play this game, but that is damn cool.

It shouldn't matter how rare the cart is or how good the game is...in the end it's an SNES rom being sold for $2 above the rip off price of normal SNES roms on this service.

Why shouldn't the actual value of the game relate to the price of the game? The fact is if you want to play Earthbound legally this is a bargain, as are many other Virtual Console releases. What would be a fair price in your opinion?

Word!!

From my perspective so far I think the game is alright I'm thinking the beginning is a little slow like most rpg's. The music and artwork are great and I like the fact that you can sneak up to get the first hit on enemies which I presume this is one of the first games to have this feature. Can't say I'm a big fan of the battles though, pretty much plays like most rpg. To be fair though there are only a handful of turned based battle systems that I have actually enjoyed, usually the ones that are more interactive.

Is there a way I can download a guide on my phone i'd love to read through it when I head out.

Ahahaha. I had no idea. Thanks, Nintendo.

Baffling. I thought this was coming out in December.

They never gave a specific date, they just said it would be later this year.

Nintendo on many occasions, Iwata, Miyamoto or both, have said that they still look to surprise their fans. This is one of those rare moments.

Are people really that poor that they can't spend $10 on what I understand to be a fairly substantial game?

And people are ACTUALLY whining that Nintendo released this out of the blue? They give us a somewhat unexpected present, and suddenly that's a BAD thing?

It's NeoGAF. Do we honestly expect people not to complain about a Nintendo decision?Nintendo could give us all infinite blowjobs, and people would complain that they used their teeth.

I'm happy about this. Just would have appreciated a heads up. It's gonna be awhile before I actually end up playing the thing.

How many copies of Earthbound did you get on steam?

I've got an idea, why doesn't everyone whose complaining about the price take their $10 and go buy a used copy of the game and play that. Surely you should be able to pick up a used copy of a 20 year old game on the cheap.

I assume if they said it'll be released in two weeks we would've heard choruses of "BUT IT'S JUST A ROM DUMP! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?"

Pretty sad that people would defend a company exploiting its most loyal fans (in this case, those willing to purchase barebone releases of old games) by charging a premium. Oh well, whatever floats your boat, guys. Maybe they'll bump all SNES games up to $10 if you buy enough copies :O

VERY nice surprise. I just underwent surgery and I'll have to stay in bed for the next 3 to 4 days. Earthbound on the Gamepad will sure help make the time fly.

That said, while it doesn't bother me, I'd have thought they were gonna release Eartbound along with the option to gift downloadable games to people on your friends' list. Seemed a no brainer, but who cares? Not me. Finally gonna meet you outside of Smash, Mother series!

10$ is 10% of 100$, which is the price it costs to buy a physical copy of Earthbound right now. That's a pretty good deal.

Prices should be game dependent rather than the same across the board per console anyways. Some SNES games are in fact still worth more than $8. This particular one is worth a couple hundred at least. With that in mind $10 is a pretty good deal if you are interested in playing it.

The releases aren't exactly barebones either since they come with customizable controls, off TV play, save state ability, and a player's guide in this case.

10$. Exploiting.

Exploiting.

I'm not so hard off that I'm going to cry about it being ever so slightly more expensive. Now, if they had made it significantly more expensive I'd be agreeing with you.

..because it's a ROM and can be sold in infinite quantity. There is no rarity issue with a ROM.

I actually failed to realize that was a premium price point at first, half of that's $10 being a more normal price point than $8 or $9, but the other half is probably because I wanted this game re-released for so long that so long as they weren't going to go crazy and demand $50 or something I'd have been fine with it. Though the $30 credit from SMTIV/FE helped too, kind of fitting to just keep using it on highly desired RPGs really.

... And another way of looking at it for me was to look at what's on PSN, or even what's on GOG. Games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are $10 there, and there are some games on GOG that are fairly old but went for $10 rather than $6 anyway. Granted most of them are at least a few years newer than Earthbound, but at the least I consider it disingenuous to contrast with Steam: we're talking a normal price against crazy sale prices, at most you're usually getting two newer indie titles at the same price as this.

EDIT: And I wondered in the OT if the price could've been due to cover licensing too just to make sure the music wouldn't pose a problem. Otherwise there admittedly doesn't seem to be much reason to go for $10 unless I'm underestimating the cost and effort put into the online strategy guide.

You think the company doesn't know this, along with the fact that your other legal options are way more expensive? They can charge what they please, they're no charity. Considering it's only 2 dollars more than the usual, and how much easier it is to obtain than any other legal alternative, I think you fellas are drowning in a glass of water.

If you want a legally sanctioned, officially sponsored ROM then there is.

Exactly, apparently a lot of people don't understand what a free market is. They can price their goods at whatever level they choose. Supply and demand will dictate whether they price too high or not. If you think it's too much, don't buy it. It is not in Nintendo's best interest to undervalue their product.

I watched the Direct from today. Bill said the players guide is digitized for viewing on the gamepad. I'm sure that's what the extra $2 is for. Sounds reasonable to me. I think if they gave that option for more games that would be a good thing. Why can't Metroid crawl?

I understand that Earthbound is rare. That doesn't mean Nintendo HAS to charge a premium for a ROM of it. It's a good business decision to do so, but also pretty scummy. It's also baffling considering Nintendo is in no position to be charging a premium on software for a system nobody is buying to begin with.

Before someone asks (because they undoubtedly will), I have a Wii U. I'll never pay $8-10 for SNES games though, at least until Nintendo starts putting some actual effort into them.

I was talking directly to the person I quoted, not Nintendo. If I wanted to send that post to Nintendo, I would have emailed it to them and you wouldn't have even seen it.

So, can we start over?

Charging a premium for the ROM seems a little odd since it has been the standard that games are based on the platform and so far, SNES games have been $8.

There is no rarity with a ROM sold by Nintendo. They can sell the same ROM as many times as they like because there are never going to run out of copies.

I think it's just a PDF.

Holy holy holy holy holy holy holy

shit I have to buy this. We all have to buy this. Mother 3 is possible(?!)

Nintendo, your decision making has just been something else lately. Absolutely no hype buildup for this, other than the announcement it was coming MONTHS ago. The hype's all gone now.

HNNNNNNGGG PLEASE SUCCEED GAH

Don't buy them. Don't complain about not buying them.

You know what you're right, I've been fooling myself. Nintendo has hoodwinked me. There's a hole in my heart in the shape of two dollars. Hopefully I can recover from these financial straits I've gotten myself into.

I had forgotten about that. It still makes me laugh.

On one hand, I think a conversation is to be had about Nintendo's Virtual Console schedule and their prices.

On the other hand, using Steam sales as a benchmark to complain about prices for top-tier classic games on the VC is asinine. Steam sales exist within their own space-time continuum where ordinary perceptions of "value" are twisted around like taffy.

Not exactly, it's a web interface made specifically to be Wii U Game Pad friendly. It's at earthbound.nintendo.com if you haven't caught it being posted before. Although from my quick experience it seems to only work decently on the Nexus 7 when held horizontally, and a joke on iPhone. Since you can access the web browser whenever playing it's not a HUGE deal but it's still kind of disappointing.

If anything, I saw this posted on their Facebook this morning. They're also promoting it at San Diego comic con. They're inviting the public to come record testimonies at their booth. So anyone in the cali area. You should go! You don't need a badge to participatein the recording.
