Earthbound is up on the Virtual Console [Wii U]

Guys I bought an Earthbound themed shirt on Wednesday and the game suddenly released Thursday.

Does anyone have a link to a Half-Life 3 shirt I could buy?

Not a fan of the pricing but I'm a sucker and it's Earthbound. I have three games for my Wii U and they are all SNES titles. haha

Is 10 dollars seriously so horrible for a great game? Other SNES games are 8 dollars this is 2 dollars more for a game people really want. I don't see the issue.

Today is a good day.

A game that topped reader polls for most requested every Nintendo Power issue for five years...

It's video games, so I wouldn't call it horrible. Exploitative is probably more akin to my feelings. I can understand 3rd parties not sticking to standardized pricing (Square did this with FFIV/FFVI on Wii VC if I recall) but it's a Nintendo title. Maybe there is some licensing issues that required the price bump but I'm not a fan of tiered pricing based on quality of the title.

Then again, I did get Super Metroid for $.30 so I'm still ahead. /glass half full

Never played this and wanna see what all the fuss is about but 10 dollars for a SNES rom is steep. Does the eshop have sales?

There are sales, yeah. They're very rare though and the chance of an Earthbound-sale in the even-slightly-near future seems almost zero. You might have to wait at least two years or so, and even then there's no guarantees it will actually pop up.

bought it last night. ive always tried playing but paying on an emulator always sucked.

cant wait to actually beat this game.

It is kinda like when FFVI came to Europe on PSone

I was browsing the game section in a store and suddenly I gazed a Final Fantasy cover with the roman VI numeral...

Couldn't believe my eyes

I remember this coming out, but never looked into it. With all the hoopla I'm curious to try it down the road. Is there an rpg this is similar to? Is combat turn based?

Downloaded.

I wonder if and how many people would buy a WiiU for this (especially in EU).

Anecdotal, but I personally know 2 people that bought a Wii U today because of this. Then again, they're both massive RPG fans.

It's turn based, yes. It's the most similar to Dragon Quest when it comes to gameplay really, but that would be selling it short. The music, art style, humour and the like are what elevates it above most RPGs.

I heard if you play a ROM of this game, the difficulty becomes mega hard, right? Does that happen from the immediate beginning?

Oh no that was just an anti-piracy measure! It's not like that in the Virtual Console release.

Now that I think about this is pretty cool. When VC Earthbound was announced I was totally expecting more of a fall release. I'm definitely surprised they decided to release it in the middle of July, not that I will complain.

Too bad I can't really play it right now and I have to finish up my Mother 3 playthrough first anyway.

Closest thing I can think of is Paper Mario. Simple, streamlined combat and dungeons, irresistably charming and witty.

I found about about this through Facebook yesterday after work, so I dunno, doesn't seem like an "out-of-nowhere" thing to me. The release hit before the marketing, which is fine since people have been hype-marketing via Miiverse for quite some time.

That was only the case in the very infancy of SNES emulation. Emulation advanced and that issue was not a problem anymore a very long time ago.

hype was in effect well before miiverse was even a fleeting thought in someones mind

Are you positve its 60hz, the scrolling in it has a weird telecine like judder to it like its skipping frames here and there, doesn't look 60hz to me
I've played the actual cartridge on an NTSC-U SNES. The scrolling judders slightly there, too.

It's 60Hz. Stop worrying, relax, enjoy.

Well, it is time for me to finally play this game. I kinda get some sort of Chrono Trigger vibe from everything, regarding how charming it is. And I loved that in Chrono Trigger.

I always recommend to anyone who loved Chrono Trigger to play Earthbound as it's probably the closest any game comes in feel to Chrono Trigger. It's certainly not Chrono Cross.

God I envy you. You're about to have the gaming experience of your life. And you still have Mother 3 to play too.

I hope they release SNES games (and hopefully GBA games) on 3ds eshop as well. I'm not planning to buy a WiiU soon. Not before Bayonetta 2.
