Earthbound to VC? ESRB Listing

I dunno, I could still see a tweaked DS rerelease down the line... Nintendo's done it before plenty of times (Doshin, Cubivore, Animal Crossing, Twilight Princess, Tetris DX, Link's Awakening DX, etc).

Only if NoJ decides to do one for the japanese market. They sure aren't making one specifically for NA.

Just Earthbound? I thought Mother 3 was better?

I tried playing through Earthbound and was quite annoyed at its super-high difficulty. It was funny and unique, but gameplay should have been better.

I'm still buying it...

No, but it could be done with an eye towards western release... that was one of the reasons behind Animal Crossing GC actually. And NCL does look to the western market even with their more niche games sometimes (see: Fire Emblem VII).

They should put it on WiiWare, they won't, but they should.

This is the truth right here. If Nintendo had a soul they'd tweak it to run well on a larger screen (but not redo the whole game or anything dumb like that that would take months/years) and release it as WiiWare. But they don't :(

I think people would play it in the usual SGB/GBP style box even honestly.

Actually, I think it'd be better saved for their inevitable Virtual Handheld service... though I think a localization then would even be kind of unlikely. Dedicated DS release is really the best chance imo, and that's iffy itself.

They should release all three games (without any censorship) on one DS cart.

That might be asking a bit much, three games, and still risking the publishing venture they seem to be afraid of with Earthbound, even though they seem oblivious to the fact that it was 13 years ago, things have changed, and it was a rather unimpressive looking game in previews going up against fucking behemoths.

WiiWare, there's no real risk. It would another meaty game on the Wii, and a good bit of publicity for the service, IMO.

Holy fucking shit. Awesome! And what is it with everyone saying this game's hard? As soon as you're out of the first town there's absolutely no need to grind at all, I actually found it quite easy.

Anyway. YES. YES. THANKS NINTENDO. Finally a step in the right direction. This right here is the best game ever right next to Chrono Trigger.

:D :D :D :D :D :D <3 <3 <3

Hmm, is that the reason why FE7 had an extensive tutorial at the beginning?

I dunno man. The thing is, FE didn't get released in NA and fail like EB did; it (as the first attempt to market a FE outside of Japan) apparently did well enough for Nintendo to keep publishing them. And hell, FE now sells in NA neck to neck, maybe even better than the Japan numbers.

I think I remember reading someone on Gaf saying he interviwed a Nintendo employee. Can't remember who...but they hinted that Earthbound was on it's way and if it sells a ton...Nintendo will release the other games in the series...

Looks like it was true...:)

Maybe releasing Earthbound on the VC is to get ready for Mother 3 coming to America!

You guys are like a bunch of abused women who just keeps going back even though she knows her husband is scum and will never change and that she'd be happier if she just moved on without him.

Damn they should do a quick and simple remake of Earthbound with cute 3D models... kind of like Harvest Moon/Animal Crossing-style simple 3D models.

I really thought part of the charm of Earthbound was its ultra-pixelated sprites.

They can put it on the DS, and just use the original sprites as the textures. It'll look about the same.

Amir0x will love it.

Btw Amir0x still has his promise to keep! :D

So I'm not the only one who remembered :lol

I never played Earthbound but it's fun to play with the fans. I guess I'll try it out on VC when it comes out. More importantly, this thread was sorta right :lol

I suppose its a glimmer of hope to the EB fans, but I would honestly prefer some kind of Mother 1 + 2 + 3 pack for the DS or something. Its just too easy for Nintendo to release EB for the VC and then use its lackluster sales as an excuse to never translate Mother 1 and 3.

A Mother Trilogy for the DS would be amazing.

What? No. No. No. Earthbound loses something without its super-deformed, tiny pixellated sprites. It's why I was elated when Mother 3 for GBA kept the Earthbound style, and why I ultimately felt that it was the right move to make it for GBA instead of N64. I'm a diehard Mother fan, but I never could get myself to like the art style that the N64 version of Mother 3 had.

Nintendo doesn't usually let first party games sit in the queue for a while, do they? I know some games have been on the ESRB site for ages and haven't hit the VC yet, but those by and large aren't first party titles, correct?

Kirby's Dreamland 3 has been.

I won't get too excited until I finally see the glorious PR release that says it's coming. When that'll be, who the hell knows. Has Mother 2 even been released on Japan's VC? I certainly wouldn't expect Nintendo to release EB before it's Japanese counterpart, given that it's much more appreciated fan base definitely ain't us Yanks.

I have to admit, this is the best game-related news I've heard all week! I truly, honestly never thought they would even consider putting Earthbound up on the US VC for a minute. That recent VC poll obviously had some effect. I didn't think any higher-ups saw that poll but I'm thinking they did.

As for the game itself, this is one of the best RPGs you will ever play and one of the best games in general you will experience. I can safely say definitely one of the weirdest. But a good kind of weird. I've always wished I could find just the right words to explain this game to people. It's the closest thing we will ever come to seeing "The Twilight Zone" in a Nintendo-developed and published game that's for sure. It's just, the writing, atmosphere and everything come together JUST right to make for quite the unforgettable experience. I will definitely download this as SOON as they put it up.

Despite what some think, this WILL have an impact on whether we will get Mother 3, even if that chance is very slim. The RPG market is much, much better here in the US now than it was when Earthbound first came out. The market is there for Mother 3 I believe. I firmly believed it was time for Nintendo to put their hesitation with this series into the past and give it one last chance here. With the fanbase basically exploding in the last few years I think a release is justified now. The next thing to be seen is just how many people download Earthbound when they put it up. If the numbers are huge I'm guessing they will at least consider the possibility of Mother 3.

I really think the easiest way for them to bring it to the US at this point is WiiWare. Yes, they could go the DS route but I just think WiiWare makes more sense. They can hit all the fans of the series that way and most of them probably already have a Wii.

Anyway, this is great news, and I'll do my part when they upload this to the VC. It really is a game everyone should experience.

I believe Mother 2 has been out forever, and is even a masterpiece in the JP version of SSBB... making us non Japanese gamers PISSED THE FUCK OFF.

No, it is not out on the Japanese VC marketplace yet

I suspect this is to coincide with the release of Earthbound DS.
That seems like a strange suspicion to me. If you're saying they're making a Mother 4, I doubt it: Itoi didn't seem to want to do any more, and especially not so soon after Mother 3. If you're saying they're making a Mother compilation and/or Earthbound port for DS, then why would they sabotage its sales by releasing the same game on VC for a cheaper price?

Port of Mother 3 to the DS, perhaps. If it comes over here, that's how it'll come.

But I doubt it.

Well, he called it "Earthbound DS," which made me think he wasn't talking about a port of Mother 3. But I suppose you could be right.

In a sick sort of way if they DO make Mother 3 for the DS or something and therefore have to cram it with all kinds of stupid stylus gimmicks and change the game (not to mention the censorship... there's some pretty risqué stuff in Mother 3 I hear, far more than in Mother 2)... well as an Earthbound fan I would be very upset but not entirely surprised. :( "This Game Stinks II: Electric Boogalo" D:

Remember, all this means is that the game is done, rated, approved, and ready to be put on Virtual Console at any time. Therefore, every week that we do not get Earthbound from here on out, the only reason is that Nintendo does not like you.

Bully TFrog into an Earthbound retronauts when it does, please :)

what? I thought it came out ages ago? Why the inclusion in JP SSBB Masterpiece then?
It isn't out on any of the different regions VC marketplaces. Mother 2 is the only Masterpiece that isn't for sale yet, IIRC.

SSBB doesn't use the Virtual Console emulators, it has it's own specialist ones so it wouldn't really be an indicator of VC releases anyway.
