Earthbound U.S. release 20th Anniversary June 5th 1995-2015

I'm still currently in the middle of my first playthrough (I'm in Threed now). My only real problem so far is the status effects which are just a necessary challenge in any RPG and this game has quite a few. Really though, I'm definitely in love with this game right now. The atmosphere really grows on you and it's so unique to the RPGs at the time and even current ones. Also, that soundtrack.... so good!

I was luck enough to get a Ness Amiibo at preorder price. Sitting in the box on my entertainment center, can't decide if I should open...

I coveted this game for so many years, and when I finally bought the VC version available via the Wii U, I was ecstatic. It's a charming and strange game, and in many ways, it was very much in my wheelhouse but...I just found certain parts of the experience totally enervating. The tedium was ridiculous. In all those years reading the impassioned encomiums about Earthbound, I must have missed those voices of dissent that may have pointed out that the game can become a bit of a bland slog.

So, alas, I didn't finish it.

Even though back in the day I was sad we lost Earthbound 64 (just because I was such an obsessed EB fan I could stomach anything), I am really glad it never materialized in that form.

I probably would have vomited from how bad the N64 era visuals were. Even back then as a huge EB fan the screenshots we got were so grotesque it was hard to find anything to praise about them

I really wish that we had gotten both.

While I absolutely love the Mother 3 that we did get, and well I do prefer 2D games in general, and while Earthbound 64 did look a little bit rough, I was extremely obsessed with it as well, I would have loved if we could have seen it anyway.

What the flying fuck at the prices for Ness Amiibos?!

46 dollars?!?!

nintendo

ness was a gamestop retailer exclusive, requiring in store preordering, at 2pm on a thursday in april. Demand crashed their in store order system and website, forcing waits of an hour or more.

Nintendo still made him a scarce figure.

Objectively awful game.

My favorite game of all time, nothing even comes close regarding the sense of adventure and wonder the game conveys. The game must be played along with the player's guide, it adds so much charm and flavor. The OST is crazy good and unique.

Now I gotta play through it again for the 16th time..

Yeah, returning to Earthbound after a few years for the VC rerelease reminded me what a chore it could be at times. Grinding through battles that, aside from the rolling HP meter, are too basic to be remotely interesting after a few hours coupled with the high enemy respawn rate really bogs the experience down. At least on an emulator you can fast forward through the more tedious bits. Mother 3 definitely improved in this area by making battles more fast-paced and skill-based with the musical combo system.

Also damn I should've pre-ordered a Ness amiibo when I had the chance. Hopefully I'll get a second try when Lucas gets released...

Side note, during the time that I was a moderator on Nintendo's NSider forums back in the mid-2000s, I was partly responsible for getting a "Mr. Saturn" rank put in.

Also, when I was out at DigiPen back in 2000, and took a tour of NOA, one of their conference rooms was labelled "Earthbound conference room"

Was there also a sign outside the door that said "Planning Meeting for EarthBound 2. Only those who are related to this project are allowed to enter. APE Software Development Team)”?

In case you guys haven't seen it; I highly recommend this (almost) short film documentary by the Happy Video Game Nerd he did a couple of years ago.

It's the absolute best and most comprehensive summary of Earthbound's history I have ever seen. Its only problem is that it's slightly outdated because it was done before Nintendo announced the game for WiiU VC.

The first 10 minutes is just a review so feel free to skip that part but, oh boy, at 10:30 the history lesson begins and doesn't stop for 20 minutes.

If there's any hardcore Earthbound fans here that haven't seen this one yet I encourage you to give yourself 20 minutes, fire up this video at the 10:30 mark, and enjoy the ride. It's the HVGN's finest hour by far:

Agreed.

It had a slightly different feel, judging from the trailers. I think the post apocalyptic aspect would have come across better in EarthBound 64.

The interesting juxtaposition, too, bullet train + dragon, etc. Really curious where stuff like that and the minecart sequence would have fit into the final game.

That said, I'm glad I got to play Mother 3 at all. Best JRPG I've played in well over a decade.

I started a play through of Mother last week.
I expect to start Earthbound this weekend and then Mother 3 in a few weeks.

Maybe I'll actually finish Mother 3 this time.

Love this game so much :' ) Probably my third strongest favorite game ever.

I used to play and beat it once a week.

Recently got a hacked NES cart Mother 1 (with fan English patch) off the internet. now I can play the original on my console!

Wish I could find a hacked cart that plays Mother 3 (GBA on NES cart).

I think I'll start another Mother 1-3 run this evening just to celebrate! I really wish Nintendo would pack all 3 games together on the 3DS and bring it stateside.

The Milky Well always gave me a hard time in this game. I just cleared that area last night and got lucky. The big groups of enemies I fought didn't have Shrooms. I only had to fight those guys by themselves for once. Usually I save this area for later.
