Edge 179 Scores

Fixed it a bit.

EDGE have also said there are a couple of old games they would have given 10 if they were making magazines then (revisionist history at work). I think they were Elite, Exile, and Super Mario Bros. Goldeneye 64 and Resident Evil 4 are acknowledged as two games that were closer to getting 10 than any other '9/10' title.

I was considering Odin Sphere as my next rpg after FF12 (that I thought was excellent). Someone care to elaborate on the 6 ? Is this justified ?

So 6's all around eh? I guess if you took in each games' flaws and put them accordingly against what the game does right you get those scores. Which is why I love edge. The only game I disagree with (I would say CAC but the game was good but didn't have that much staying power, now if SSHD gets a 6 ill be pissed) is Graw 2. Does anyone know what the original got? I though Graw 2 improved on most of what Graw 1 did right and some of what it did wrong. I was thinking more of an 8. But what can ya do...

except hug grawpy and tell him its alright.

GRAW 1 got 8/10

GRAW 2 got a 6? WTH.. PC version?

PS3 version. 360 and PC versions never got reviewed for some reason.

Its Edge, of course its justified. They are probably the best critics for gaming in my opinion.

I haven't even heard about the first 2. Is Exile the RPG for the Sega Genesis or Myst 3?

It's not even an RPG. It's a lovely but poorly thought out action game. Go for Persona 3 instead. Everyone seems to be handing it 9.5, and it even seems justified.

Assumption or u know it? Looked fine to me when I checked the preview code 2 months or so ago.
i think it looks as good as the 360 version but with a year delay maybe they expected some kind of upgrade not only grapical but also gameplaywise.

It's indeed pure assumption. If it looked ok in your eyes, i'm curious what the reason behind the lower score is. But it's Ubisoft on PS3, that's why i expected a bad port. :D

I'm having a hard time believing that Tenchu Z can be as good (or as bad, depending on your mood) as Blue Dragon. The demo is one of the most god awful things I've played on the 360, Sonic The Hedgehog coming in second, and that's only because I feel sorry for the little blue prick.

The reviewer must have a ninja fetish, its the only reason.

No Lair or Bioshock reviews? Get with the times Edge.

Lair isn't out in Britain until late September, so plenty of time for them to do the review. Bioshock must have been exclusive reviews for PC Gamer and OXM UK, both of which are published by the same company.

A year? GRAW 2 only came out 5 month ago

This is a fallacy actually - I'm speaking of this idea that Edge's writers are more critical or professional than other game writers. They are not - why? Because they are the same people as the 'others'. It's a little known fact that a lot of Edge's content (reviews and features) are written by their contributors - i.e. by freelance writers... i.e. by the same guys that write reviews for sites like Eurogamer and Gamesradar and so on (compared to the amount written by its editorial staff). I can only assume the reason people have this idea that Edge's writers are better "critics" and on some higher level of games critique is simply down to the fact that no bylines/names are used.

Basically - the games journalism circle (particular in the UK) is relatively small, and there is a small pool of the same freelancers who write for most game publications (in print and online).

I should point out that I enjoy Edge's reviews and I'm not implying they are not good writers - and of course there are bad reviewers out there and those guys rarely get commissioned by Edge. But i think it's important to recognise that in all likelihood you have read an Edge reviewer's work elsewhere (most likely on Eurogamer) and felt a totally different level of respect for the validity of their criticism because it didn't appear in Edge. Specific style guides and tone aside, there's no logical reason for this, since it's not the opinion/criticisms of the game that would change across publications (simply the style it was written in).

Exile was almost like a Metroidvania type game. It was a huge map (a planet in space where you were sent in exile) that you explore and solve puzzles on to try and escape. Started life on the 8-bit BBC Micro and then was ported to ST and Amiga. I would have given it a 10 too. It was my favourite game in all of my childhood.

It is sort of annoying how someone posts a thread and like the first 3 pages are people with big pictures of eating popcorn instead of contributing to the so called "megaton" thread. I want to post a picture of a penis coming up out of the popcorn and it maybe it says "Eat a dick or lets actually talk it out." Maybe a better caption but I don't think we can post pictures of penises on NeoGaf so maybe it can be a hot dog coming out of the popcorn with a mushroom on top.
I completely agree. The use of the phrase "it begins" is really pissing me off as well now.

The only thing I'm going to complain about in their scores is that Tenchu Z got the same score as some other games which is totally unexpected.

Edge is by the same publisher as well.

I wouldn't play any of the >7 games on that list.

I guess Edge and I just don't have the same tastes...

*sigh*

Perhaps one day I'll find that hip underground gaming publication that covers the kind of gaming I enjoy...

Wow I didn't know that. Edge vindicated.

I actually enjoyed Tenchu Z. It looks like ass and actual combat is useless, but they did decent on the stealth aspect of the game. Above average is about right.
Yeah. That sounds exactly right. But the people in this thread haven't really played the game anyway. They saw the crappy demo and said "lololz," as if a crappy demo for a decent game was some kind of new concept.

By the way, as a person who has actually played full versions of both games, I can safely say that Tenchu Z is more fun than Blue Dragon. BD should've scored lower.

I think Minish Cap is the only Zelda game to score less than a 9 on EDGE.

Lttp GBA, WW, TP, MM and now PH have solid 9s; OoT got a 10.
But PH totally deserves it.

Remember that Edge gave Final Fantasy X a 6/10 as well..

Yeah, that was a funny old score...still they gave FFXII a 9 or a 10 out of 10 and the game of the year, so I can agree with them on somethings....

Im not surprised at all at the low score for BD with edge, they are often not into old school rpgs
