EDGE 286

I played Zelda for a couple of hours last night on single player and it didn't seem THAT bad to me. Yeah it's not ideal having to escort three players along, but the game is so fast paced it didn't seem to bother me. Plus I quite enjoyed carrying everyone around in a totem. Obviously I haven't tried the later stages yet so I don't know how complicated they'll be. I did try playing it online last night, but nobody appeared in my lobby.

I'm curious to see why Edge weren't too fond of it.

lol,
also is TTK really THAT good?

It's an improvement (what wouldn't be) but I don't think it's "9 from Edge" good tbh. I thought TTK scores were all a bit inflated across the board though. It's the Destiny they should've launched with and built off of. Still not a great experience imo, but the foundations for maybe, possible, someday being one. (vs. vanilla Destiny which was basically a playable version of a Bungie developer's dream of the beginning stages of the concept of Destiny)

I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain this post btw

Pretty good score for Project Zero 5. The scores for this game are really all over the place for some reason.
It's been that way with PZ II Wii Edition as well. I remember reading some reviews after completing the game and I was baffled by a few of them. Felt like I played a totally different game compared to them. So I'm diving in on launchday, no regrets.

The minimalist cover reminds me of old school Edge mags. THPS5 seems like a new low - don't think I've ever seen a 2/10 delivered by Edge.

Destiny score is right on and I'll admit I'm pleased to see a decent score for Fatal Frame. Rekindles some hope.

Can anyone summarize their thoughts about Tri Force Heroes?

Not that EDGE is any standard these days...

People have been churning out this line for years. I still think EDGE is to a pretty high standard. Even more so when compared with other game writing.

That cover is fantastic. Will grab this tomorrow. Tony Hawks is completely done for it seems. Interesting score for TTK. Tempted to pick it up after all the positive talk about it

In what sense do you mean that? I've been a subscriber for 15 years and whilst it's more difficult to be relevant in a predominantly digital era, I still find the quality of the writing, the topics covered and the overall consistency to be better than your average gaming focused website. The reviews are written by individuals so yeah, I sometimes disagree, but I still find an EDGE 7 or over to be a pretty good yardstick by which to measure the quality of a game, or at least, I haven't yet found a better measure short of playing the game myself.

they say it fails to recapture the mischievous invention of Four Swords Adventures. If you're playing online it limits the amount of coordination you have. Using the emotes ranges from comical to frustrating. Overall vibe is that it would be better local, but even then it's a bit familiar.

Ugh, I know people are gonna bring up the whole "scores mean nothing!!11" argument, but I think a mainline Zelda title (and It's marketed as such, right?) should not get a 6/10 in any publication :'-(
I still think they should have given the game another title, similarly as they've done with Hyrule Warriors.

Fair enough, thanks. I never played FSA so the demo felt pretty fresh to me. I can see their points being totally valid, but I'll probably pick it up anyway.

I'm surprised to hear that, since a big part of the appeal for me is that it has properly designed dungeons versus the randomized pieces that previous handheld incarnations of Four Swords has employed. I did figure that the hard three-player limit for multiplayer would be a big sticking point, though.

They say the intricacy in dungeon design is held back by the need to cater for solo players micro managing the three Links.

Also had no idea FSA was randomised. I have to imagine that the barrier to entry on that game means only tens of thousands were fortunate enough to experience it.

Disagree. The writing is the best in gaming, which is not surprising when you have people like Rich Stanton and Simon Parkin contributing.

Also, totally deserved 8 for Transformers.

I remember the days where I was eagerly waiting to get the next issue of the magazine because it was the best of the best for what interested me (tech savvy insider info) in a time where console gaming was exploding. I never bought it because of the writing and, to be honest with you, I would have to read very deep into their reviews to see what is diferentiating them from others. They are as subjective as the rest, for the good and for the bad.

They clearly dont know what theyre talking about,i mean Tony Hawk a 2,way to generous.Nice for Fatal Frame, thought Zelda might get higher.Ive not played the new Destiny...is it really that good?????Does improve the game vastly

FSA wasn't randomized, IIRC; only the handheld installments have been.

That's disappointing to hear that they wound up catering to the single player content overall, especially since the Four Swords series has always been biased towards multiplayer.

I wish they still reviewed anything but the biggest indie games. No reviews for N++, Sage Solitaire, Downwell, Mushroom 11, Undertale, Prison Architect, The Beginner's Guide...

Yeah, it's a shame, but magazine page counts and staff aren't what they used to be.
Happily surprised the magazine is still going.

Agreed. I still play it but I don't think "Damn, this feels like a 9/10 game".

A review is always subjective, but some do a better of explaining why something does or doesn't work and have a better critical eye. I was reading the Edge 100 greatest videogames special yesterday and I just loved how the Vanquish piece made a great point in the difference in design philisophy of a Japanese shooter compared to a US one for example.

But it's not just the reviews. I love something like Time Extend as well.

I expect a few of those next month.

Everything I'm getting in regard to Zelda Tri-Force Heroes is that if you have the people to play it with it's a great game. If you're willing to risk the online lag and randomness it can be a good game. Either way it's the interaction and not the depth (dungeon design, adventure, story, etc) of the game itself that makes it. If you don't have or want to deal with those other two elements and want to mainly play the single player there are far better options out there. So I can certainly see and understand lower scores for this appearing.

That's why I'm taking a pass on it ultimately. I don't think the communication is good enough for some of the encounters you have going by what i got to play during the testing. It works okay for the most part but there are situations where it's just not possible to get everyone on the right page at the right time for an encounter and it just becomes extremely frustrating. I can see how that wouldn't be an issue in local multiplayer (which this game is clearly designed around) but since online would be the only option for me I rather not deal with that frustration.

The cover is the second Death Star: a half-finished technological marvel. Serves as a good mascot for AAA gaming.

I don't really have anything witty to add to this, just wanted to take the time to appreciate the genuine smile it gave me, well played.

I didn't agree with Edge's 8/10 for vanilla Destiny. I don't deny TTK is probably a big improvement, but Edge sometimes value gameplay quality higher than the overall experience.

A 6 from Edge doesn't meant they don't like the game. To me at least it never looked particularly great. Would like to read the whole review, wish they still had their website.

Totally. A 6 from Edge is about a 7 or 8 from many publications. Uncharacteristic for them, though.

Edge clickbaiting as always with their ratings

Haha. Unsurprisingly banned.

Clueless.

Also, one year of membership without a single post, then two posts in the last day, then insta-ban. Wut?

LOL at these...

You know you're in for something special when even the developers intro splash has framerate issues

This is about as stable as THPS5 gets. It is shockingly unfinished....a remarkable mess of a game.

THPS5 is an insult to its history, licensed skaters, sponsors, modern hardware and anyone who plays it. The only person emerging with their head held high is the Activision suit who has presumably earned some kind of medal for having the chutzpah to sell this for 40 pounds

It goes on - review is a fun read.
