Edge Magazine - Jan 184 (Christmas Edition)

Not bad for a GOTY list!
Orange Box is a game because it is sold like one. If it were sold at $100+ then it should be considered a bundle.

Maybe best hardware is just a general list of best hardware/platforms for the year. I think 360 would've won but it had failures up the wazoo.

Crysis is incredibly innovative, I think they're talking about the engine. Physics, and the huge step up in graphics, it is a bar setter for sure.

EGM should feel dirty and ashamed with that monstrosity of a cover.

Totally. EGM and most other covers are always so crowded and full of clutter and noise, very unattractive, sreaming for attention. Edge cover feels much more grown up.

That's just wrong. How the heck is Halo 3 innovative? Because they "invented" the exact same gameplay which was used back in 2001 with Halo 1? Because they added a level editor which is more limited than any other level editor you can think of? Because they added a replay feature which was normal for FPS games in the 90's? Because they added 4 player online coop which Swat 4, R6: Vegas and other games already had? I'm just not getting this...
I'm sure they specify, but as you said -

1) Forge
2) Saved Films
3) Four-player online co-op through the entire campaign with campaign scoring and skull modifiers
4) File sharing and absolutely absurd online integration to bungie.net

Bungie raised the bar in their feature set. The core gameplay is classic Halo, polished and expanded. Some of the features can be found in other games. But I don't think there's as ambitious or tightly integrated a feature set on on a console title out there.

I don't understand the logic behind some of Edge's "awards".

Best Innovation for Halo3?
Best Hardware for Rock Band?
Best Developer runner-up for Nintendo? They are a publisher.

I'll find out in a few days when my sub copy arrives anyway, but do they mention what their cut-off date for the awards was? Just wondering if games like Mass Effect and Uncharted (which wasn't even released in the UK until last week) were left out due to timing, or purely because they didn't think much of them.

Rock Band isn't even out in the UK till March and that was included.

-Halo 3 did bring a lot of new stuff to the table you know. Forge is a big thing for online gaming.
-Rock Bands Hardware could also fit under Innovation..dunno bout that.
-Did you just smoke pot or something?

What's wrong with that? The Wii Channels are an innovative way of approaching online experiences and for many people more casual than most here, they'd get more enjoyment out of them than with XBL!

Remember, it's about what happened this year! the 360 and the PS3's online networks haven't had anything particularly new worthy of note released! (Vid marketplace only just launched a week ago here in the UK!)

Are you joking? What is innovative about a web browser, a news ticker, or a weather forecaster? 2 of which dont even work right. oh, and the everybody votes thing? no way in hell is that the best online experience of 2007.

if halo3 can make it up there, why not skate? or COD4. skate was pretty innovative in the sharing of the videos and the editing and stuff i thought.

-I'm sure he meant why they had Halo > Portal for innovation
- RB winning best hardware, yet they have problems with the guitars
- Yes

Edge has always reviewed games that have not yet been released in the UK. Sometimes they even <gasp> review JP only games! (Oooooouuuuueeeeeendan!)

And :lol at all you ladies so up in arms about their selections.

Think about this way, how much sense it would make to include Rock Band in the 2008 round-up discussions? Not much.

I haven't played Halo 3 but all that stuff sounds pretty innovative for a console game (even for a PC game in some regards). It's a tough choice.

Jesus, how the heck Nintendo anything could be voted into best online is beyond me. What about the channels is even considered to be online for that matter? Old weather and news? Shopping? Gimme a break.

Singstar deserves to be on that list more than any channels do. Complete farce.

I pretty much agree. It all made sense until I got to that.

I couldn't disagree more with their list of negatives on Contra 4, but that's what opinions are for, so hey.

One of the best games I've played this year.

Do you believe many FPS games will copy the formula of making you jump through portals to solve puzzles? Here's a hint... NO.

Portal is original, but I doubt it will be innovative.

Seing as Crysis is in there they involved PC gaming, so that makes Forge a complete joke, which means Portal should be up there. period.

And the Chance of someone copying Portal gameplay style is the same as someone copying Forge.

Now for the punchline...

As illustrated above, the mag is commonly considered shit for good reason. Though I have to say, these Edge threads really do provide a lot of entertainment value.

Oh no, this type of game is bound to be slapped by magazines. My problem is that Revenant Wings didn't get a 2. But it's reviews so I don't actually care.

Best innovation:

Halo 3
Halo 3 is indisputable proof of how closely Bungie knows its games' players. It knows what they value, why they play and how they play. It therefore built Halo 3 to express what its fans dreamt it could be: fourplayer online co-op, a level editor, screenshots, and the best matchmaking system in the world. But Bungie made Halo 3 much more than just what its fans thought they wanted. Instead of a vanilla screenshot mode, it has a full theatre mode. Level editing is live and collaborative, and even part of the multiplayer itself. Co-op includes a deep scoring system that provides welcome competition while battling together. It allows players to share their films, screenshots, maps and gametypes with each other. While none of these features is truly new to videogames, they have never been so thoroughly and accessibly incorporated into such a supremely coherent whole. Halo 3 is the result of a company considering its games' players like no other.

Best Online Experience
Runner Up
Wii Channels

Perhaps it's because of the atypical way the Wii integrates online, but Wii Channels are underappreciated. They've proved a pleasurable and practical source of information and entertainment, from the random amusements of Mii Contest to the beguiling globe interface of the News Channel. Their tickertapes constantly shifting, they add playful serendipity to turning on the Wii.

CHING CHING CHING!

I respect EDGE's editorials, so i'll let their insane attribution of grandure towards Halo slide on account of the fact they probably need a few extra pennies to keep the magazine going in the fledgling print world.

Unless of course implementing a few dumbed down features that have been lovingly ripped from the PC gaming community is considered closer to videogame criticism's definition of 'innovation' than a game that despite coming from the most cookie-cutter genre going, turns out to be nothing like anything anyones played before. And a universally adored experience at that.

Portal is original, but I doubt it will be innovative.

Why's it a runner up in innovation then?

So much for 'a few days'. Turns out the bloody Royal Mail just decided to do our street last today.

Can we get some hints on what was said about Contra 4, at least? Please?
EDGE said:
It's so old-school, though, that it's sometimes to it's detriment. Is there any need, on vertically scrolling levels, for your character to die when they touch the bottom of the screen, despite the fact you know there are platforms there? Do bosses have to seem impossible, and then prove tedious when their patterns have been learned? It could be argued that those criticisms entirely miss the point of Contra, but Contra, if it's not to become a curious relic, needs it's basic fomula - which can still provide furious and fantastic moments - to be tweaked infinitesimally, and less of a slavish homage to its predecessors.

No it isn't.

It's been shit for years now. Edge is nowhere near as good as it was 5 to 6 years ago. It's just that the competition in the magazine industry is so shit anyway that Edge good is still better than other mags. It's still shit in the scale though.
