Edge Online rates the big 3's E3 events

I watched all 3 conferences. The way I see it Nintendo's was like Ms's ''you're in the movies'' demonstration portion. Except it was more embarassing and lasted their entire conference. Sony's was on par with Ms except they had nothing to match the FFxiii bomb. Minus that sony and ms were about the same. The funny thing is who ''wins'' conferences doesn't matter anyway. They all know which audience they're targeting. It's who are more successful at pleasing them that will transferr into sales. Thats why Nintendo can ''loose'' here and end up winning where it matters most for them.

Microsoft 6
Sony 5
Nintendo 4

Really, that's the most boring set of E3 conferences I've ever sat through. :-/

Well, Fallout 3 (+ announcement of exclusive 360/PC DLC) demo looked great (not personally my sort of game but I could see why people would like it), Resident Evil 5 walkthrough, looked great, release date. The Gears 2 trailer imo was just awesome then CliffyB showing it off to me was really awesome. Fable 2 looked great and so on, I liked the fact that they showed third party stuff tbh, they showed what was coming for the platform even if it wasn't exclusive and it entertaining to watch, Jack Tretton talking a lot, isn't.

And XBLA stuff, Geo Wars 2, I LOVE Geo Wars, Galaga Legions, Banjo, Portal: Still alive and (coming much later) the announcement of South Park.

For me, the important bit was "Oh look, this is whats coming SOON" I mean, PSN has some good games on it, but how many times have we had release dates and have them slip massively? I can certainly see several of those games announced for PSN not coming out before the end of year whereas XBLA, yes titles do slip, im not stupid enough to say they don't but the news we're getting is that they're pretty close, Geo Wars 2 is August 6th, and the rest will follow soon.

I guess maybe my view of the conference comes from short term for Microsoft vs a bit more long term for Sony.

Oh and despite the fact that I won't be buying it and how embarrasing the show-off was, I thought "You're in the movie" looked pretty cool.

Sorry, multiplatform games don't win you E3. Never have, never will. Demoing games that you can also get on the competing console shouldn't earn you any brownie points. And while getting FF13 was big for them, they're only sharing it, they didn't really steal it like some people are trying to make it out like. And they're not even getting it in Japan.

MS wins the show by virtue of FFXIII alone. I don't even know what else was there, nor do I care -- this was the biggest news of E3 by a mile.

Nintendo's conference was horrendous (worst ever, easily), and Sony's was just kinda...sad.

Well, the way I see it, is the Microsoft conference (again bar the demo of the Movies games) was enjoyable to watch as a gamer, I want to see Resident Evil 5 demos, I don't care where I see it, but for it to look great and be entertaining in the Microsoft conference to me is a "brownie point".

Its all subjective and im not trying to say what you think is wrong just putting across my point.

And a ton of new PSP games too. :D

Yes, I think the real winner at E3 is the PSP. I think it's fair to say that the PSP announcements exceeded everyone's expectations.

A sony win never in edge get away. They couldve shown nothing and edge wouldve given them a better score. The bum licking by edge towards ps3 has me on the verge of canceling my yearly sub.

Edge bum licks PS3? Since when?

Why does 3rd party matter when they're announcing quite a bit of new 1st party games exclusive to the system anyway?

And Fat Princess was not expected. :lol

oh well wii gets the heat because lack of third parties so there you go

also nintendo deserves a -2/10

whats with the all the new hate for cg trailers? They were always used to show off new games. Why do people hate them now?

I guess the Edge guy walked out of the MS conference before the FF announcement seeings as he doesn't deem it worth of a mention!!

No he didn't that is why he knows that FF13 is not 360 exclusive and that is multiplatform, after been on the sony conference he most have see that Sony biggest announcement where about games that were PS3 exclusive, not about multiplatform ones.

Remember that the xbox 360 has been on top thanks to his exclusive games, now some how Sony has more of them so the tune has quite change.

Sony certainly had the most entertaining conference, but I really wouldn't say that makes it the best. MS did harp on 'mainstream' games a bit much for my liking, but it's understandable as there's obviously a market out there for 'em and MS needs to gain a foothold in it. It's not like they did so at the total expense of core games like Nintendo did; RE5, Gears 2, FFXIII, more Portal, Fallout 3 (w/ exclusive content), Galaga Legions, Rock Band 2 time exclusive, the Square Enix stuff, Banjo... sure, aside from FFXIII there weren't any real surprises, but it's still a very strong lineup. As far as media announcements went, MS announced a content partnership with the biggest video rental outlet in the world and added another major studio to their XBLM portfolio, while Sony rolled out the same sort of video marketplace MS has had for years, with a pretty pithy amount of studios on board, comparatively.

Minus 2 from all the ratings and it sounds about right. Though personally I'd give Nintendo a 1, though casuals would probably rate Nintendo's conference much higher.

Because after 2005, Sony and CG seem to be the usual rehashed trolling argument that idiots immediately puke out.

Biggest by what metric? System Wars?

As someone who owns both consoles, an announcement of a multiplatform game really doesn't do much. The lack of any substantial new game announcements (not counting Lips) was a huge let down for me.

Someone rate them with this system:

Spinoff E3 Thread = 3 points
Pages in a related E3 thread (past 1st) = 1 point each.

That's the only fair way to do it. MS has got to be the winner.

I think Sony & MS are basically a tie. A really, horribly conceived conference for MS. Lots of awkward moments, the audience really wasn't feeling it. Gears 2 was awesome, but no real juice after that... then they dropped FF13 which redeemed them. Sony was kind of the opposite. Very, very slick presentation but no real new PS3 game footage or announcements, except for MAG.

Nintendo... 0.0

Well put. On the presentation alone, Sony won, but the FF13 announcement at the Microsoft conference was definitely the moment of the show, and is maybe the only thing that'll get talked about a few years from now in retrospect. I thought the avatars were stupid and made the presentation seem corny, I thought the movie thing they did was embarrassing, and then they slammed everyone in the face with the giant FF13 bomb and made up for the rest of the show being pretty lame.

Sony's show was dull, and they didn't really show me much that I hadn't heard of before, but the presentation was good, and they showed a lot of good games coming, just nothing new. I don't understand why they didn't do a Killzone 2 demonstration, I think that would have given them a slight edge, after seeing the new footage and game play.

Nintendo managed to turn me off completely as a gamer this year, and the announcement of the new motion control addon made me quite pissed off. The WiiMote was billed to have very accurate motion controls from the start. I bought a Wii, the controls were far from accurate, I sold the Wii. Now they're going to put this $30 peripheral that makes the WiiMote work like it should have in the first place. Now a Wii remote costs $90 with all of the peripherals included. That's a total ripoff. So saying that I'd actually give their performance this year a -2 out of 10.

oh we are doing that "post your opinions" thang?

MS: 4/10
- +2 for FF13, everything else was terrible. Funny that the majority of the conference was dedicated to casual gaming and nobody cared. What a difference one good announcement makes. Kudos Microsoft.

Sony: 3/10
- Shooter, shooter, dark shooter, online shooter, mmo shooter, action shooter, TEH CELL POWAH UNLIMITED POTENTIAL
- The conference completely turned me off PS3. Absolutely awful. Shooterboxes for teen male technophiles FTL. At least Microsoft is trying to be diverse.

Nintendo: 2/10
- +2 for MotionPlus. Awful, Awful conference. Nintendo keeps sitting on their asses. Hay dudes how about trying to grab a demographic you don't have on lock. A lot of profits to be made. I know how much you guys like money...

He looks a lot like my boss.

Let's see, for the record:

MS - 7/10
Gears looked more impressive than I was expecting but still feels too 'been there, done that'. Fallout looked very dull and generic, RE5 looked great, most of the conference was forgettable, especially the big part in the middle where they showed off their Eyetoy and Mii ripoffs. 360 is clearly the best system this gen in terms of a raw gaming perspective, showing off ripoffs of the competition just cheapens what MS have accomplished. New interface is cool. Was disappointed to not see a new Mistwalker announcement. The FFXIII news was fantastic though, stole the show for MS.

Sony - 6/10
Nice to see the PSP and PSN get support, Resistance 2 looks great and epic even if I didn't like the first one. Too much focus on FPSes though. Where are all the Japanese games? LittleBigPlanet release date confirmation was good.

Nintendo - 2/10
Biggest disappointment ever for me. No storage solution, no Kid Icarus, no Punch Out, no news on VC/WiiWare, no Mother, no RPGs, no good 3rd party announcements. Wii Sports Resort doesn't look that bad, but Wii Music was a total disappointment. I don't mind the casual games initiative, since usually there are some solid mechanics thrown in there... hell, even some parts of WiiFit are kinda challenging and actually fun to play and beat your 'high score' in. But, Wii Music doesn't even have that challenge, the game doesn't even look like it gives you real feedback or anything.

I would put it like this:

Microsoft - 8
Sony - 6
Nintendo - 3

This is exactly my opinion as well.
Not sure how Sony's conference is somehow "better" than MS. They each had the same amount of content... until FF13 was shown.

Their best looking title is the antithesis of a shooter, really.

Because many don't consider pandering to the casuals as the "same amount of content".

I don't get how Sony's conference could be rated higher than Microsoft's. Sony's was decent and all but they spent half the time showing off CG trailers and talking about their nostalgic past. The conference was just a "hey guys, Playstation brand was awesome, is awesome, and will be even awesomer in the future!" Did I mention the stark lack of RPGs?

MS showed some pretty ground breaking stuff for their console and actually demoed their games. And FFXIII.

They didn't actually have 'the same amount of content'. Sony managed to squeeze nearly twice as many PS3 games into their time than MS did, and they also had the PSP etc. to accomodated. Granted, they sped through them..

I expect this coming from you but I am still going to reply

FAT PRINCESSS!!!! PSN games were awesome. PSP games Patapon 2 gameplay shown bitches!

Little big Planet... Sure R2 and MAG were big focuses but what about DC universe game or the incredible infamous footage.

Glad finally people are doing ratings just like I asked for. :D

Definitely disagree with the scores though, which is very disappointing to me.

PSP looked great. Of course their main game was a *deleted* but i think its more appealing than PS3 right now.

Looks at avatar

oh that thing? The thing that got a 5-second mention between more shooters?

Well, it was a big part of their 'charts' bit.. :p

And it looks like it will, outside of 90 minute conferences, get as big a push as anything shooter-y Sony has coming. At worst, then, you can say the conference didn't give proper weight were it was due, in that it mostly sped through everything. The games don't disappear after the conference though, the flow of stuff out of them afterwards gives a better airing to them.

I'm not going to call 360 a soccer-mom-box because they spent a lot of their conference on casual stuff..I know better, and you should too. The conferences don't necessarily fully and proportionately reflect a system's mix of content. They have 60-90 minutes and they have to pick and choose, or gloss over (the latter is what Sony did).

Just looking into E3, was there anything new at the Sony conference?

Actually, they showed a decent mount of new games (some completely unknown, and some that hadn't been seen in motion to my knowledge).

The majority weren't new big-budget PS3 (BD) titles, so I think that's why a lot of people whined.

This I dont get. Why do you care about demoing games on the conferece? E3 conference should be all trailers. Game footage will be taking by journalist when the get to play the game and videos pop up. Shit look at the amazing Killzone 2 footage just released. I dont want to see a person play a multiplatform game on stage I want to hear about new stuff coming not hey we did a hack job to blatantly copy Nintendo and Sony ohh and here is some multiplatform games!

Sony's show focused on a whole load of great looking exclusive titles and revealed a bunch of new games on PSN, PSP and PS3. MS' show had great games but a lot of them were multiplatform and the stuff in the middle was pretty bad. Sure MS had the biggest surprise but overall, Sony showed the most reasons to buy a PS3. So, overall, I think Sony had the better conference.

they were pretty even but for different reasons unless you're a fucking nutcase. in which case please do continue to post your feelings.

Actually i apologize for not adding that unlike the other two, Sony at least tried to maintain a game focus. That is pretty much why i rate it higher than Nintendo.

I personally thing EA and Ubisoft had the best conferences.

The fact that there's a playable PS3 build of Mirror's Edge that got demoed on LiveWire and not in Sony's conference is mind boggling.

That isn't the point of the press conference.
