Educate me: films you love that everybody hated

Urnx4B1.jpg

You can't call yourself a Star Wars fan if you hated 3.

George Lucas answered all the complaints the first two prequels had. The movie [still has] great CGI, better writing, and added alot to the Star Wars universe.

Noooope

I actually liked the American Ghost in the Shell movie.

*runs away to hide*
Same! I was ready to dislike it, but it was actually pretty good. The plot is a bit messy, full of cliches, it should've shut up about it's themes, but it was really besutiful. There were just a ton of ideas and details with the city and the characters that it was enjoyable to just absorb it all and gave it a surprising amount of humanity.

Alien 3
Tree of Life
Death to Smoochy
The Gambler (Marky Mark version)
Punisher Warzone
The Wolverine ( the first two thirds is great then it fall apart in the finale)
8mm (Nic Cage film)

Freddy Got Fingered is great. I've always enjoyed it, and have seen it get a little more credit recently. Like the dark absurdity of it. Loved it as a kid and still do.

For some unexplainable reason I've heard unsubstantiated rumors that some people don't consider Kung Pow: Enter the Fist one of the best movies every made, which, clearly, it is.

i was going to post this but I see other people clearly have great taste.

also, that's a lot of nuts.

Death to Smoochy

quite possibly Robin's best role. And Jon Stewart's.

Uh no. I've read about 12 star wars novels. and saw Empire Strikes back in the theater and I can resoundly say that RotS is a piece of shit. Yes its better than the first two in the same way getting stabbed is better than getting shot.

Warcraft
Speed Racer (though my love has finished over the years)
I'm not sure how folks feel about Cloverfield, but I love it.
Spring Breakers is a good one.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is largely considered one of the weakest films but I think it's one of the best.

I absolutely loved I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and that seems to have had really mixed reception.

And I liked the ScarJo GiTs well enough. I don't think it's particularly good, but I'll probably watch it again at some point.

I remember being so disappointed with Order of the Phoenix because they cut so much good stuff iirc

Gotta say, Thor 2. A lot of people make jokes about it here, but I enjoy it.

Love it! Weird physics in London, Greenwich Naval College as the target for weird aliens led by Chris Eccleston as a kind of evil Doctor Who.

One of my favourite Marvel films, if only because of the way Loki drapes his lovely form all over the place.

But actually: no.

That was a fabulously popular film. This thread is about films nearly everybody hated, but you liked.

Hands down, Kung Pow.

My phone notification is "Wheeoowheeoowheee" and has been for years.

My ringtone is the taco bell song and has been for years (both my own recordings reused on every phone I've had).

I quote it daily and recite the bungee cord joke whenever necessary.

Anyone who dislikes it is badong.

And my favorite gaf poster is Betty and he knows why.

Edit:

Also, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014. I absolutely love this rendition of the turtles and it has my favorite shot/choreographed over the top action scenes I've ever seen in a comic book/videogame/cartoon live action adaption.

Ang Lee's Hulk

Took what on the surface is a stupid brain dead character and actually added some complexity and emotional conflict, also has a great score by Danny Elfman
This and Superman Returns. They both are character study films with very deliberate pacing for characters primarily known for punching things.

I don't think I'd go so far as to say "love," but I really enjoyed Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within when it came out...and I'm not really into anything Final Fantasy post SNES era.

I love Joe Carnahan's The A-Team.

Speed Racer.

Lone Ranger.

Crystal Skull. Maybe not "love it" but I damn sure don't hate it.

A-TEAM was awesome. i have no idea how people dislike it. everyone in the film is having the time of their lives.

I don't "love" any of these films though, but I would place them in "above average":

I watched Avatar again on blu-ray and it's fx is up there with films today, even better tbh, the story isn't as shit as I previously thought.

Ghost in the Shell was better than I thought it would be.

I think The Life Aquatic is one of the greatest films of all time.

One day I hope to get the energy to write up a thread on it.

Hated it. Love to meet somebody who enjoyed it. I'll wait until you're ready. I felt as if the film was directed in a foreign language to which I possessed no lexicon.

Its always been Wes Anderson's best movie. I love it so fucking much,

But I would rank Moonrise Kingdom as his best since that came out now.

Corky Romano had no right hitting theaters, but that movie has a lot of funny scenes that make it watchable to me, though I"m a sucker for shit comedy movies like it and joe dirt

Judging by this thread, there is no right answer. Everyone has opinions and anecdotal experiences. Everyone I've met shits on Thor 2 and its even a running gag here. For every post there is a response of, "no not really."

The Gambler (Marky Mark version)

The only redeeming moment in that whole movie was John Goodman's "Fuck you money" Monologue.

With that said "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and "Masters of the Universe" since I saw it again after hearing how Jack Kirby influenced it.

Yes, I get that there are local exceptions. I just didn't expect a really popular Marvel film to be one of those.

Miami Vice - Visual and aural aesthetic masterpiece and culmination of the style Michael Mann was developing since Thief. This film is practically the Terrence Malick of crime cinema.

I'll go to bat for this as not only one of my favorite crime movies, but one of the best movies of the 21st century so far, and maybe even more blasphemous statements beyond that if you push me hard enough.

Folks need to stop posting stuff like The Punisher and Iron Man 3 and stuff because it's starting to make me feel like I like bad movies in general.

Mine would probably be Road House or Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Yeah they're cheesy action movies but those are the best ones. Hell I think I like just about anything Cannon made in the 80s if only because so many of the movies they made are just so amazingly fun.

Push - A cool little sci-fi flick with a great cast, a really well drawn world with some great use of the locale(Hong Kong), it is the best X-Men movie we've gotten thus far.

Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 - A rather unpleasant experience, there is no fun to be had here, but a welcome alternative to the traditional slasher sequel.

Speed Racer will get the appreciation it deserves one day.

I think a lot of people like this movie, but I absolutely love this movie, and critics definitely seemed to hate it when it came out. I love it for a few reasons, it's a really good satire about fascism, it's one of the best sci-fi war movies ever made, and, although it takes place in a fascist utopia, it's incredibly progressive for its time. I mean, a war movie where women have a presence in every facet of war, from army grunt to naval command, it was mind blowing at the time.

Whilst skewered by critics at the time, there are tonnes of smart folk that see the greatness of Hook.

I think The Cable Guy is genius.

I think that's a pretty well received movie. Dirty Work & Death to Smoochy on the other hand are pretty polarizing.

Gotta say, Thor 2. A lot of people make jokes about it here, but I enjoy it.

I think bandits starring Billy Bob thorton and Bruce Willis is one of the great movies.

All good to me

Maybe I'm crazy but I don't remember this being hated, just that nobody gave a shit. I loved it when I first saw it and I wonder how well it holds up now. And a street-level superhero shadow government pseudo-heist thing feels so much more like what would be produced in modern day superhero tv.

There are probably most movies in here, I enjoy than a normal thread. Though I have to disagree with the notion everyone hated for a lot. Speed Racer is a bonafide Cult classic now. I know a few reviewers even went back to state it was much better than what they gave it for.

Lone Ranger and John Carter are two others as well.

Stuff like Ready to Rumble, Dirty Work, Warcraft, Ironman 3, Alien 3, etc. I loved too.

If we're going for a few I don't see a lot of love for, normally used as jokes.

-Battleship: It's basically what Transformers should be. Likable cast, action, well paced, etc. Nothing is great outside the water effects.
-Tomorrowland: Even the ending, I enjoyed. It has a certain charm to it, you don't find in movies much anymore.
-Immortals: Superman's first gig as a superhero. Pure style over substance.
-Wolfman: The first 2/3 are fantastic and probably the best adaption of the werewolf story, then it sadly falls apart. But damn it was good.

GIJoe:Rise of Cobra was another. Doom. A quite a few more....

It was actually pretty harshly received(currently sits at 23% on RT, with an audience score of only 42%). It still confuses me to this day, I would take Push over the majority of superhero films out there.

Oh man is Battleship something. It is the single most subversive(maybe accidentally) mainstream film made since Starship Troopers.

And I definitely agree with you about Tomorrowland. It has some problems here and there, chief among them that the main protagonist is really along for someone's else ride, but it is still great.

It sucks that Tomorrowland, The Lone Ranger, Tron Legacy, and John Carter all failed to gain mainstream traction.

Well. It everyone hated.

But I think Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is maybe top 5 when it comes to entertaining films. Endlessly quotable, great action. Hilarious dialogue. Even when it is bad, it is funny bad. Never boring.

The Fountain. I think it was something like 50% on Rotten Tomatoes when released. I love that film. One of my favorites of all time.
