El Shaddai Demo - April 14th

Do demos usually release at different times for US/EU? Don't see it up on the EU marketplace and can't download it on the US since I don't have Gold there.

Just played the demo and immediately after went and pre-ordered it. I actually got sad when I realized it was still a month and some change away. Haven't felt like that about a game in a long time. Cheers!

i... really wanted to like this.i love the art. the style.

i dont love that...

the enemies seem to have a huuuuge life bar, so combat drags on.... all fights seem to take place in circular arenas.... and those arenas are reached through really bad platforming sections.

please tell me there is more to this game then the demo lets on =(

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the platforming sections

This is how I felt as well. I jumped into the demo with some excitement, but the combat is just not that fun. Fights drag on for way too long and enemies have cheap moves that can't be interrupted, resulting in cheap hits that should have been avoided.

I didn't mind the side scrolling platforming, but the parts where we jump into the screen were difficult to gauge, especially with the floaty jumps. Needless to say I went in excited, and left disappointed. I'll definitely be avoiding this game.

i hated them. it was really hard for me to judge the depth properly - it just felt weird.

yes, i'm aware of the shadow on the ground.

My thoughts as well. I'll give the demo a second look since I was exhausted upon first glance and quit after the first battle and platforming section(fell down and had to restart the arena fight...fuck that).

But yea, I'm very lukewarm from my very brief impression. Even in combat I kept trying to figure out dodge/avoidance moves as I felt like enemies constantly disrupted my combos without any defensive means of my own to disrupt. I stumbled on the Left Bumper manuevers, but the air juggle didn't seem to work very often(Normal difficulty).

Looking like a $20 pickup months later than a full day 1 purchase right now.

yeah, the combat is the worst aspect of the demo by far, to me at least. i'll grab this when it's cheaper somewhere along the road.

Hm, since the demo isn't japanse only anymore I hope you guys kept puryfing your weapons? If you don't fights drag on for way too long. Keeping that I mind I never had a problem with too long fighters in the demo or the full game.

As for the platforming, I guess it could be a little less floaty but here again there were only like 2-3 places in the whole game they feld a little tricky (at least for me).

Finally got around to playing this demo...man what a cool game. The art style is incredibly cool and weird. It's such a breath of fresh air from most games which try to go for a realistic look. I actually thought, "wow, now this is what I expected from the next-gen graphics back in 2005..."

Gameplay mechanics were kinda clunky a bit, but simple enough. I've added it to my Amazon wishlist.

I think the combat fits the game perfectly. I wouldn't want this game to feel and play as deep as Bayonetta or DMC. The game is going for that minimalistic approach, so the fact that they formed the combat system in a similar fashion makes sense.

El Shaddai is style. It's a cool cat. It's that cool summer breeze on a hot, sweaty day. July 26th approaches my fallen angels, believe!

Downloaded the PS3 demo. Haven't tried it yet.

Are there any differences between the versions?
IIRC I heard on Warning A Huge Podcast, the PS3 version has a higher framerate, but the 360 version has higher AA + AF.
The podcaster recommended the 360 version ultimately, as a lot of the games appeal is the pretty and crazy art style.

He was talking about the way the game controls, not the combat system itself.

I never died in a fight, but a lot of the times I got hit during combat it felt like the result of Enoch reacting too slowly even though I pressed the block or jump button long before being hit.

I do like the greater emphasis on combo beats(you wait half a second between your attacks to get a new one, with the arch this means getting behind an enemy or knocking them down), charging, and each weapon having its own platforming specific ability.

Played the demo, didn't like it. Don't know what's so special about it. Doing some spacey graphics doesn't make a game special, it's the content and overall feeling. Plattforming was horrible.

Yea I was pretty dissapointed. I hate beating the shit out of an enemy for like a minute before he dies. It's annoying and makes your character feel weak. The platforming was pretty bad and after a while the visuals just became dreary. Very pretty game, but the gameplay is blah.

I really think that this game would fare better as a download xbla/psn game. There is no way that I would pay $60 for this. I might pay $10. It won't sell retail, and will be bargin bin in two weeks anyway. Cool concept though.

Posted my thoughts on the demo in the game's OT thread, figured I'd repost them here.

Played the demo today. Very impressed.

This game is an exercise in visual and audio excellence up there with similar classes like Okami in that regard. It's unlike anything I've ever seen. The character designs as seen in the OP look bad on paper but work well within the game itself.

The platforming feels really solid and is really serviced by the game's amazing visual presentation. Running on the waves as they arose and dove literally took my breath away.

I'm also fine with the combat and the one button approach. Yes it's simplistic, but there is a solid enough variety where there is didn't feel shallow. There is a surprising amount of depth and variety in timing and charging attacks. I'm satisfied with it in that regard. What I am concerned with is enemy variety. If the enemy variety is lacking the combat is going to become a chore.

I'm definitely picking this one up.

This game would be ten times more gorgeous with some better anti-aliasing. The amazing art is greatly hampered by its absence.

Thoughts on the demo: I wasn't expecting the combat to be this fun. Usually, "art"-y games are synonymous with lovely visuals with the cost of clunky controls and mechanics, but everything here is smooth. I love the music as well. I will buy this game at a high price.

Played the demo of this yesterday without hearing about. LOVED the style, and once I got the combat down, it was very fun as well. Im very intrigued, this will definitely be a purchase.

I am LTTP for trying the demo.

I didn't know this game existed until my friend told me about it.

I found the combat to be too simplistic and the platform depth judging to be rough.

But my girlfriend loves it.. LOL I might get it the retail game for her

Beautiful visuals and audio, horrible combat mechanics and fights. Platforming was ok but nothing special.

Was hoping for better combat, may pick it up at some point on the cheap and play on easy just to get through the fights.
