Essentially, if you see this guy, hope he hasn't seen you, and buff. If you see lots of these guys (and you will), it's time to hightail it.

Clearly a game ahead of its time (and the technical expertise of Bethesda).

Always a big fan of procedural content and its possibilities.

Talk about broken Masterpieces. You couldn't get out of some dungeons without a cheat. My first introduction to the Elder Scrolls and it's skill based leveling system. There was controversy / disappointment when Bethesda refused to introduce a glide/opengl version. DaggerXL looks good.

Ditto. Procedural things get me giddy with possibilities.

Elite, Daggerfall, Spore all excited me, but sadly Spore was a disappointment.

To be realistic, I feel bad for Bethesda. It's not that they WANT to make smaller and smaller games each time. The resources needed to make a world get ever more expensive and time consuming.

It's a tragedy, because if they were willing to downgrade the graphics to a handheld, they could do something massive. Sure they could do a massive world on console, but with handhelds, they have an excuse to look ugly.

Oh noes Elder Scrolls are made for PC, this would be a travesty in my opinion. I eagerly await building a new rig for Elder Scrolls 5.

Elder Scrolls are made for gamers. Because of the pressure to have a beautiful game they seem to be shrinking the content. I wouldn't mind seeing a portable only game that used older tech to make an Arena/Daggerfall type of game.

Im cool with a portable version, but i bought morrowind & oblvion both on consoles first and eventually bought both for PC and it opens up a whole new world considering the skill of the modding community. I definitely would love to have a handheld version, just not the whole game based on a handheld.

I'm really ashamed to say that I could never get my head around this game when it first came out. Not even sure if I got out of the first dungeon, always got killed by a fucking Imp in like the second room :lol I didn't realise you could get it for free now so I'll give it another go.

So I passed by this series at the time, but all these maps and stuff are pretty interesting. I'm curious though, how much of that gigantic map did most of you see? Did the plot take you to the corners of the map or did you spend most of your time in a small area?

Doesn't seem like there's enough time in the world to play that game the way it's meant to be played.

For those that couldnt get Daggerfall to work.. i havent had any issues since ive always used my disk and not the file download that Bethesda provided. This time however i tried to get it to work with DosBox and my frontend and ran into a snag. One of the first things i found remedies this entire situation. It looks like someone has taken the Daggerfall files and put them with a portable version of DosBox. What that means is you dont have to download and install another program (in this case DosBox proper) but just run the gui installer Ancestral Ghost has provided and you are done :D This also has the necessary add-ons already taken care of.. the patch, the CompUSA quests, fixmap.. other stuff like fanmade quest fixes are optional upon install.

This makes the entire process super easy and should no longer be an excuse to avoid playing.

I wish they could figure out a way to combine the expansiveness and freedom of Daggerfall with the not-totally-crappy quests of Morrowind and Oblivion.

The author's simultaneously emulating through a new homebrew engine and improving (bloom effects, bumpmaps, heightmaps to simulate actual mountain ranges rather than the dinky anthills in the original, etc.)

Definitely gonna keep an eye on this, then.
I think I'll wait until it's a bit more polished and feature-complete, though.

I've seen pictures and information on this project and was interested in the project, but the picture in the OP is far better than I ever expected it to be.

i really like that they are using the sprites for npcs/creatures. i hope it stays that way.

This is pretty much my point. I feel like handhelds are increasingly becoming a safe haven for niche subgenres. There's nothing wrong with that. They get to thrive.

The one Bethesda game I truly fell in love with. Numerous hours poured into this one...

Absolutely loved the detailed character builder; even if some of the skills weren't incredibly useful.

Sounds awesome. I'll probably never get around to playing this, however, because I never did beat Morrowind or Oblivion though I still have a great desire to do so. But the thought of having a massive world with thousands of NPCs is very nice. I always wished that Morrowind had about 4 times as many NPCs. That would make the towns/cities closer to the size of real locations. Maybe they'll do this with ES5.

It would be totally amazing if the next Elder Scrolls game is as large as Daggerfall. I have been surprised in the past to see people down on Morrowind for dumbing things down, but I thought where Morrowind was scaled down, it kinda had to be because it was taking the 3D to the next level. But Oblivion, which I did enjoy on it's own, kinda went even more in the wrong direction with the series. I thought after Morrowind the type of world building and mechanics would be established, then in the next game they would expand. Sadly they didn't do that.

Wish I had more time to this. Do you need DosBox to run DaggerXL, or you install the packets over the game and are good to go?

Is it possible to make a game this large again in todays gfx heavy enviorment?
If they use the same tech (procedural generated) as Daggerfall maybe...

Search for:

Infinity: Quest for earth

If released, should be heaven.

Maybe in the future, with a badass procedural map generator, they will be able to create an Oblivionqualitylike envroinment, big as the Daggerfall one, with one click.
Procedural stuff seems to be the future anyway, so.. believe.

So can somebody really explain why Daggerfall is so good? Because all I've seen so far is that is has a ridiculously huge procedurally generated map. Whoop-de-do.

Still the only game I know of that lets you play as a wearboar!

I wanted to be a wearwolf but always only got infected by the wearboars. :\

I played this game for silly amount of hours back in the day but don't understand the need for replaying it now other then nostalgia. Nothing in it that the sequels don't do better.

I want a new elder scrolls =(

I want an old Elder Scrolls running on DS homebrew. I'm hoping this will do the trick (I'm sure the DS can easily handle Arena, and I suspect it can cope with Daggerfall, too)

I just don't really have the time any more to invest in a massively explorey world in an RPG, which is a crying shame because I *loved* those back in the day. The best chance I can imagine to get to play them properly would be to have them on a portable system which I can fire up randomly in quiet moments to progress a little; a bus ride here, a half-hour before going to sleep there.

Oh that's rad! Cool project!

I love the Elder Scrolls series. I have loved every single game. Daggerfall was great and truly a revolution the Western RPG genre, and then came Morrowind which took this further and then Oblivion. Nevertheless, I'd love a new Elder Scrolls that goes back to its roots whilst keeping the astonishing beauty of Oblivion.

What I am saying is, Bethesda, you better show us something at E3!!

I'd love for Bethesda to port Daggerfall to the DS. Honestly though, I tried to play Daggerfall for the first time last year, and starting that game was like running into a brick wall. I still had fun with what I played.

Leaving the first dungeon though, the music and the snow. Amazing.

Daggerfall to the DS

Would be so amazing !

Thank you for making me dream of something that will likely never happen :'(

Stepping out of the first dungeon into the snow and hearing this was a defining video gaming moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b89Qa8qPmT0#t=0m11s

As to why Daggerfall still sticks in some peoples heads, even today...

It's hard to explain the impression that exploring a truly massive world gives. Older gamers who played Elite and Daggerfall know why it's so appealing - you have the sense that you really CAN go anywhere and do anything, regardless of how repetitive it might actually be in reality.

It's the same feeling you go in Oblivion looking out over the huge landscape, but multiplied, because in Oblivion, the landscape ends a bit over the horizon, in Daggerfall, it went on for days.

I still want to see some dev studio tackle something of this nature again, with a big budget. The only games still exploring this space with regularity are roguelikes, and most of those are focused mostly on the dungeon crawling aspect.

this is way games like Two Worlds II stay on my radar because if someone gets it semi-right it is some of the best gaming you can have...

thats a nice project :D i hope they finish it so that the game is in a state where you can actualy play it :) iam playing elder scrolls games since morrowind but never played arena or daggerfall yet.

That's what I'm hoping for. Procedurally generated assets seems like they're coming back in style, and if they cna do it for Daggerfall, it would be great.

i think they allready did that with the forest in oblivion maybe if they can improve that they could do a massive landscape like in daggerfall again but that leaves the problem that the game is fully voiced and if you have 15.000 towns ._. thats a lot of voice acting

Reminds me of Exult.. !
Its a shame that they are using DirectX though, will make a Mac port more unlikely..

Skip it.
Or use the same tech. (Same voice but an algorithm that change the sound of it)

No idea if it is possible since I can't code shit.

They could just not have it, or just have everyone say the same thing like Oblivion.

For me the highlight of this game was getting overencumbered to the point where I had to strip off all of my armor and clothes and hop back to the temple/shops.

A DS version of Daggerfall would be awesome but what I really wanted was basically an open source version (I can only imagine the horror of the code base though) or at least one where mods could be added. That way an army of modders would be able to flesh out all the regions add quests, unique dungeons or what have you.

Bigger doesn't mean better. It's one thing to have thousands of town and dungeons, but if they all look the same and are generated randomly, what's the point? I vastly prefer smaller and tighter experiences.

Oblivion was a step back from Morrowind in that way. The reason why Iliked Morrowind as much if not more than Daggerfall was because it there were many unique locations and they used the new tech to add to the design. You had levitations spells that let you jump across half the world and prisons that floated in the sky and things like that. Oblivion was just a really flat, bland world with everything tucked inside gates making it feel like a hub instead of an existing world.
