Electronic cat litter boxes

With summer time fast approaching so is the stench of cat turds left in the litter box until you get home after work. I have always been interested in getting one of these but when they first came onto the market I never heard of any good reviews. Does anyone on Cat-GAF have one? Do you like it? Is it worth it? Would you recommend?

What kind of cat litter are you using?

I clean it every day in the morning and I don't have any of that smell - except when they're actually doing the deed, but then they bury it and it's fine.

My cat doesn't bury shit, literally. She drops and runs. I'm afraid an electronic scooper would just get messy.

We own 2 cats and 2 litter boxes, i clean them maybe ... every 3 days?

I'm using high quality cat litter and my cats bury their poop and pee nicely, so i don't notice any real smell :/

I wasn't even aware there WERE automated litter boxes. Which model are you thinking of buying?

I just checked a few of these automated models, and those wouldn't work with my cats / the litter we're using at all, because my cats often pee very close to the wall of the litter box, which means the 'bricks' form along the wall and also stick to it.

A couple of my cats are like this and dont always tidy up after themselves.

Your best option is to simply use a scoop to get rid of the poo when it happens.

I have seen those trays that you can turn to sift out the poo but all you are doing is mixing the smell throughout the litter and could put your cat off from using the tray (Smelling the same a s dirty tray).

I used to use one (LitterMate?), but it scared my cat too much. And then it broke one weekend while we were out of town and the motor was stuck running the entire time... not fun.

That really isn't an issue.

Just train your cat to use the toilet. Way easier.

I really want one of these Luuup litter boxes where you just lift it up and it drains the unused litter out the bottom. Seems like such a nice solution.

they are $50 though and feel like there's probably a cheaper alternative out there. Luuup does have a buy 2 get 1 free, but I really only need 2 of them.

My bitch of a cat pinches a loaf and leaves it for everyone to see as well but ever since I moved to crystal litter over clay litter it doesn't smell as bad

So I got this for our cat when we moved into the new house, and while it's nicer than the usual sifters because you don't have to transfer the entire box's worth every time, if your cat digs to go, pee-litter will still stick to the box.

And it sucks that there's no covered version.

What breed of cat do you have, what litter do you use and what do you feed the cat?

Both of my cats don't smell as bad when i put them on Indoor cat dry food. My ragdoll can still stink out the laundry but not as bad as ehen she was on a different food.

I have always used crystal litter with scented things in it

2/5 of my cats don't bury their piss/shit, and one of them HAS to piss on the back of the box so most of it doesn't even get covered by litter. We have to wipe clean the back of the litter boxes every day. It gives me comfort to know I have fellow sufferers in this thread.

We use claybased litter with lemon/lime/.. scent so the smell is negligible.

Do scoop out turds every day though, just in case.

I only have two cats (wow, five!), but one of them is exactly like that. Doesn't bury, pisses on the back of the box. Pretty annoying.

Don't get one. Seriously. We went through about 4 of the electric litter boxes before we gave up.

They just don't work...at least not for long.

Electric boxes seem prone to issues in the long run, as LosDaddie's post indicates.

I switched from Yesterday's News to World's Best and haven't looked back. And my little guy's poo is STANKY - it would fill the living room.

It sucks. We've only had one for a few weeks and are already just using it like a regular litter box with a scoop.

I had one back when I used to have two cats, think it was a Littermaid? It worked mostly, but when there was an issue such as explosive cat shit post eating a bug it was a nightmare to clean. Also, the prongs tended to end up with stuck litter/piss/shit and it needed a hosedown quite often.

Some cats deal well with them, but anything that could potentially change a cat's litter box environment and habit is sometimes bad news. Doesn't take much for them to get freaked out and then become leery of using it.

I have a ragdoll mix. I feed him dry indoor cat food and use crystal litter. For the most part the crystal litter is fine but sometimes his ass explodes on a hot summer day and it funks up the whole house.

If you have an Electronic Cat, why does it need a litter box?

Seriously though, I can see the appeal, as I hate hate hate scooping the box. But I think scooping is the most efficient way to do it, considering how weird cats can be with their different activities. One of my friends had an electric one, and it worked for about five months or so, but then it started to have issues. Don't know the model or how much it cost, but the family has an obsession with buying overpriced unnecessary gadgets, so I imagine it wasn't a bargain bin one.

Edit : Firebrand ninja'd my damn joke.

We have 3 cats and 3 boxes. Covered boxes with charcoal filter pads really cut down on any smells. Higher quality litter is a good idea, too.

As for an automated/robotic box- I mean, knock yourself out, I guess. It takes all of 5 minutes to clean my 3 boxes once a day. Not really at the top of my daily inconvenience list.

Try an antibacterial clay litter maybe? I use that, I scoop every night (and replace the whole thing once a week) and the stink doesn't leave the litter box.

I've had a Cat Genie since like, 2009 I think.

I will never, ever, ever, ever live without a Cat Genie. Fuck litter boxes, fuck them all.

I would get into a murderous rage when my early 2000s electronic litter cleaner would jam up and I'd have to clean disgusting mess from its comb mechanism. Taught me to resent cats. Even though I loved them and cared for them while they were alive, after they died I was happier and healthier.

Never, ever again.

What's the problem with good old litter boxes? It takes 30 secs to remove everything anyway. Get one of these litter trash can that you leave right next to it, and you will only have to take out the bag once every 10 days or so depending on how many cats you have.

Too many moving parts.

1. Get a big litter box with no top.
2. Get a big (BIG) scooper.
3. I use dog poop bags as I also have a dog, but paper bags or old grocery bags work.
4. Scoop every day or so.

No weird devices to break or clog. It takes all of a minute to scoop a litter box.

It literally is. It clumps like magic, but it's not nasty smelling clay or dust that gets all over the floor. The material is almost like sand that got wet, dried out, but stayed a little tacky. I'm not sure. It is the best though. Only litter I buy.

We found that one in our yard one day. He's estimated to be 12-14 years old. He'll also occasionally spray outside the box as well. Used to be more frequent when we first found him about 2 years ago, now only does spraying outside the box every few months. We already had too many cats but when this happened, we knew he was unadoptable and decided to keep him. He was probably thrown out by his old owner for it, if I had to guess (he's fixed and very affectionate so he definitely wasn't a stray).

Covered box, ideally a clever cat. Line it with a litter liner, non clumping litter, about 20lbs per box. Mix litter with arm & hammer double duty litter deodorizer. Then combine with litter genie, swap out fresh litter and new litter genie bag every two weeks. That is the way and the light right there.

I've never had use for an automated litter box, but I hate clay based litter: the mess, the dust, how the litter can become cement-like, litter particles tracking all over the house. I switched to the pine pellet stuff they sell in places like Petsmart. It was equivalent in price and volume and made a big difference in how messy the box was. Then I discovered pine horse stall pellets at Farm and Fleet and got the same product in 40 pound bags for $6.

big scooper is key. The tiny little ice cream spoons you get with your litter box are ridiculous.
